Here is the bike pre-farkled!
Gonna be wrenching over the next few days to get the AltRider skid plate and crash bars put on along with the touratech zega pros. Need to wire the GPS into the harness also. Tires are sitting in the garage, but I'm lazy and will just have the local shop throw those on for me. I take no joy in spooning on tires!

Just ordered a pair of Forma Terra boots for the ride. They should show up friday. Gives me a few hours to break them in ;)
This ride is turning into a trial by fire! New bike, Al new farkles, new gear, new boots...
While I am no stranger to riding and off road expeditions, this one takes the cake for the most "what not to do's"!

All this adds to the adventure I think. Ride report will officially begin Friday with the load out of the bike and packing! I'm looking forward for you all to read along with me and laugh at all the mishaps that are sure to happen. I plan on doing this as cheap as possible. Camping, making friends, putting some survival skills to use (hopefully not too many). I think the booze will be the expensive part! But I never leave home without the cocktail shaker (nothing beats a Tom Collins around a campfire)!
So let's all enjoy this one for what it's worth.

So these happened today... Turn in on the front tkc80 feels ...ehh different. Like it wants to flop over past a certain point. Took a few miles to get used to. The grip is still there, but I wasn't pushing it too hard. Cannot feel any significant vibration up to 60mph with either the TKC 80 or the Mitas E-07. Should be a good set up off the beaten path. Plus, they look bad ass.

Time to get wrenching on those AltRider parts...

Quick update: so far we have been blitzkrieging the TAT. Set up in a dicey motel in Pulaski; just north of the end of section 10. We are averaging 3-4 sections of the trail a day.

Day 1 had us leaving Fayetteville, NC a bit late due to work requirements. I think we finally left around 3pm... Yikes. Took our own route to the small logging/tourist trap of Dyson, NC; a quaint town in the Smokey Mountains. From there, we rode the Cherahola Skyway to Tellico Plains where we linked up with the actual TAT route. Traffic on the skyway was as expected; full of Harley's and CanAms. Weather could not have been better. Eastern Tennessee was a cake walk. Just a handful of miles on dirt roads with small water crossings were the only exciting bits.
What we love about the TAT is it takes you on roads through "real" America. Villages, towns and countryside that one would never see by taking the highways, state routes or even normal back roads. Cutting through farm fields with corn stalks towering over us on both sides, even while standing on the pegs, brought a sense of awe and appreciation to where our country came from and how it goes about its normal life.
We hope to make it to the end of section 13 at Ripley, MS tomorrow. I do have to get better at taking pictures and videos! I get so caught up in the ride and the moment that I don't even think about pulling over and setting up camera equipment/GoPros to capture the experience. That will change from here on out! We will easily make it to colorado by Saturday if we choose to keep up this pace. But if we aren't enjoying the ride, we will slow down, speed up, change the course or do whatever we need to in order to keep the spirit of the ride alive. That's it for now. Pretty worn out from changing tires in the motel parking lot...

Standing watch over the Cherahola Skyway

Fantastic views!
The Fryemont Inn at Bryson. Highly recommended. The owners drove us to a local brewery and knocked back several cold ones with us late at night. Swapped stories for hours. Great company.

Great start! Good observation on real America a lot of times I find myself on slab trying to make time and miss so much. That TKC felt the same to me when I first put one on it just takes a ride a two wear it a bit. Really good traction for off-road and more than enough for road. I have confidence with it. Thanks for letting us follow along. ENJOY!!!!

Yea after a few hundred miles, those tires were scrubbed in pretty well. No more chicken strips on them ;) I am extremely impressed with them. That combination seems to be the golden egg on this bike. Confidence inspiring off road and I'm working them as hard as I was the battle wings on road. No where near the performance as my old Pirelli scorpions were on the road though. But that was as expected.

Enlisted the help of "Ned" , the Albanian, at a local car repair shop to set the bead on the 1200gsa's Karoo shoes. That bike should eat through those in no time :D

Today was a fantastic day. Definitely one for the books. Started out by changing tires in a motel parking lot in Pulaski, TN. started route 11 of the TAT. Made it 60 miles into the trail before I had a catastrophic flat. Had a piece of what appeared to be 18th century railroad spike lodge into the edge of my tire (where then sidewall meets the tread). Took 75% of our tire plugs to seal it enough to nurse the bike 60 miles to Florence/Muscle Shoals AL, which had the nearest bike shop. Tire is toast. Got a room at the Comfort Inn and a fantastic dinner at a local diner. Ended up taking the waitress out for drinks afterwards where she took me on a "tour" of the town. Needless to say, we had a "great time" ;)
All things work out for the best in the end! Looking forward to getting the bike fixed any continuing the adventure tomorrow!

Oklahoma sections of the TAT: if it is or has rained, skip it. Nothing but crashes all day long in deep, greasy mud.

Yup - I wouldn't even try my TKC70s or an Anakee3 on that.

I had a TKC 80 up front and a Karoo 3 on the rear. Still no match. Currently in the Rockies now. Nothing short of magical.

Cinnamon Pass: in the rain on a 1200 of any type, it's best to avoid it. Our bikes were so tired they had to take several dirt naps ;)
