But it seems there should be noticeable difference between engines that do get the treatment and those that don't?

You bet!
The follow photo is from the Nissan pickup I sold last year. The injector and intake port on the left show the results of running no additive for about 80,000(iirc) miles. It's a sticky tar lining everything through-out the system. The injector and port on the right I'd just cleaned and looks like what Jaxxon found at 45,000 in the customer bike.

Read this: https://www.aaa.com/AAA/common/AAR/files/Fuel-Quality-Full-Report.pdf Looks pretty normal to me IF the engine was properly taken care of. A rating of "Top Tier" fuel came out many years ago after determining why there were so many injector problems and eventually carbon fouling of combustion chambers. I have been trying to use "Top Tier" fuel whenever I can in everything I own and that's a LOT of different engines both two and four stroke. I got sucked into cheap gas two years ago because of the huge discount we were getting with other purchases for "fuel points". Sometimes as much as $.60 a gallon!!! After reading the AAA report I went back to Chevron/Texaco. Once a year I run Seafoam through everything and leave it in if something wont be used over the winter.

If no obvious signs of a head gasket leak or a cracked block......then.....what do the spark plugs look like? Discoloration that is unusual could be a sign of fuel additives.
What does the coolant look like? What color is it? If there's blue coolant such as engine ice then the green liquid could be something else. What does the green liquid smell like? If the oil does not look like a milkshake, then why is the supposed coolant still green?

Does he use additives? Ever pour anything else like motor oil or tranny fluid in there?
Bad gas?
The bike ever overheated?

I swiped my finger on the internal pipe of the exhaust outlet and found soot. This is from using Ethanol laced fuel in Thailand. That's a lot of carbon for 1200km of ethanol usage. My usual Malaysian fuel has no ethanol. Perhaps I am also using low grade Ethanol fuels at a few instance.

I have swiped this pipe months ago and never found any contamination.

Just waiting on parts. I did learn from the customer he runs low octane fuel and does not add add in anything extra in the fuel. Also, most of the time he fills up ethanol free fuel.
