Top cases and passenger comfort

Hi folks. I’m new to this forum and I have already learned a lot about the S10 and have had some questions answered just from reading through this forum.
I have some questions about top cases and passenger comfort. I will be getting my 2024 S10 in April and do plan on riding with passengers including my 88 year old mother. This is a lady who in my younger days before owning a bike said “if you can afford a bike, you can afford to move out”. When I got a bit older I did get into riding and eventually got a Goldwing GL1500. Well after a few rides, my mom was hooked. Even took her on a five day ride. She loved every minute of it. I have been looking at the Givi Trekker Outback. It has backrest pads that can be added but it still doesn’t look comfortable. Some of the moulded (round) hard cases that can also have backrest pads added look more comfortable. Can you folks who have experience with this chime in and let me know what has worked for you.

The other question I have is again with the Givi Trekker Outback 58 litre case. It is 22 inches long. Would that be too long/wide to be able to access the side cases?

From my perspective, just some padding on there is better than sitting against aluminium as well as not having the feeling of falling off backwards.

Unfortunately, nothing you do is going to compare to being on a rolling reclining lounge chair like a Goldwing - except another Goldwing.

The benefit you have now is that the bike isn’t heavy enough to tip the Queen Mary onto its side or need a reverse gear.

I’ve discovered myself the drawbacks of having a top box that was too wide and then replacing it with… another top box that was too wide. At least you’re savvy enough to ask the question before buying something else (I wasn’t…)

i have a givi trekker outback box that came without the backrest my wife hatted it, i bought the backrest its soft and it works lovely, also my wife needed more room on our trips, so i moved the topbox back 2 inches to give us room its great now my wife liked the 1200gsa better as it had more room, but the tenere now is as good, also put lower pegs on for her

This is what's been on my bike for many years and miles now:

It may not be to everyone's liking, but my partner has been using the backrest for probably close to 100,000 miles now, and swears it's totally comfortable.

It's just a WalMart ATV seat pad. For extra padding I folded it in half, sewed the edges closed with a needle and thread, and filled the void with a piece of outdoor furniture foam. The backrest is held onto my top case by two quick release polypro webbing straps, that are attached to a D-ring on each side of the case. A velcro strap on each side of the bottom of the pad secures the bottom of the backrest to my luggage rack, so it stays in place when my passenger gets on and off. Easy to remove when I want to. It doesn't interfere with opening the top case.

The seat pad was about 20 bucks when I bought it, and I had the other supplies laying around from other projects. It was a quick, easy solution, that ended up becoming permanent.

I wish I had done that. That's the best way. That's my setup OP.

I had to do the same with my TC GS a few years back, but then I carried quite a few more pounds then than now. But we decided last summer I need to ease the Ten too, maybe just an inch. Not sure how best to do it yet, but will suss it when I do the 24k service in a month or twos time. She’s currently sorned while I use the Pan for the winter.
One thing we don’t do is the backrests, especially on givi boxes, the wife finds they bash her in her back too much over bumps. And if I lowered the pegs she wouldn’t reach them, she’s only got wee legs

How big is your Givi case (litres)? Any issue getting into your side cases with it installed?

no its the 42l topbox, i have the trekker side cases to all open fine

Nice. Thanks for that. I did end up ordering the Givi outback 58L case with the backrest pads and will modify padding if needed. The nice thing about the Givi Monokey is the ease of removing the case as I know it will have to be removed to access the side cases.

Hi @bimota I’m looking to move my givi plate back exactly as you’ve done in your photo. I’m just curious how you managed to accommodate the three other countersunk bolts that hold the plate on now that their corresponding holes no longer line up? Did you just re drill and countersink the givi plate with three new holes? Thanks

On this topic, I have the OEM Yamaha topcase and I wonder if I can rise the mounting plate with an inch. My wife is complaining is too "low" , not sure if a back-rest will suffice. I can use longer bolts but I'm curious if there are other ways to accomplish this.

No worries, thanks Rob. After a bit of umming and ahhing I drilled the plate and managed to find some button head bolts that fit under the top box to avoid countersinking the holes (I didn’t have a countersink bit the right size, and necessity being the mother of invention etc etc )

I’ve had exactly the same comment from my pillion passenger I’m still thinking through various options so dont have an answer for you I’m afraid. I’m hoping to create something that doesn’t involve drilling the top box, but is also removable as 90% of the time I ride solo… my thoughts at the moment include a wide strip of 9mm plywood about 50mm higher than the top box, covered in foam, somehow attached to the givi top plate… More thought required I think let me know if you come up with a solution..

yep exactly the same way i did it but used countersunk as i had a counter sink bit but the same thing job done, did mine 4-5 yrs ago now no issues

I'm thinking just to replace the 4 bolts holding the baseplate with longer ones , I will use some 8mm nuts as spacers. This will improve a little bit the position. For pillion comfort I will add some foam padding ( self adhesive option might work ).
I will add some pictures when done.
