I'm looking for a top case for my ST. I found a used Givi E52 that I'm considering as well as the Givi Trekker 52. Does anyone have opinions on either case or how they like either on the ST.

Thanks,

Dan

The 52 has to be gigantic. I've got the 46L trekker as a topcase for riding two up, but it's so big it stays at home on solo rides. The 46L will fit my XL Shoei Hornet DS fine...but if you are positive a 52 is on your wish list, then they're fine other than my opinion on dimensions.

Are you looking specifically at the trekker, or the new trekker outback?

I'm going to be using this for commuting. I would like to put a laptop as well as a few other things in the case. a 46L kit would probably work but I think if I can get a 52 it wouldn't be a terrible thing. The E52 that I'm looking at is used so I might get that one and figure out if the E52 is to big and maybe get a 46L Trekker.

I have not heard of the Trekker outback and looking quickly it looks like they are side cases only. Can you correct me on that one?

The trecker is a top box too. Also check out the Kappa ones. If you're concerned about looks I think the trekker will look better than the E52

I think the outback series is just side cases though. I agree that the trekker is a top case as well as side. And I do agree that the trekker will look better than the E52. I'm looking at a used E52 so I'm saving about $100 off the price of a new one. I'm trying to decide if the $100 is worth getting the E52 vs a Trekker.

My bad, you are correct. Side cases only.

For the topcase in terms of the e52 vs the trekker, it's most likely cosmetic only. If you're not going to like the looks of the e52 after you get it six months down the road, then maybe that $100 was worth it. Up to you ::008::

Thanks, I definitely like the Trekker better than the E52 but it comes down to spending the extra $100. The E52 also has the light kit installed. That is a nice addition to add a little more visibility.

I agree with Karson on the size issue, kind of. I've got a 46L Trekker top case that I used on my KLR. Looked good on the KLR. So for the Tenere I bought the AltRider rear rack and the Givi monokey mounting kit so I could use the Trekker, but the AltRider rack makes it sit WAY high on the bike. For me it's more the height of the Trekker (due to the AltRider rack) than the size that I don't like. A 52L would make it even worse. There's definitely a point with top cases where size becomes an issue, cosmetically anyway.

Get the one you like. You will forget the $100 in a few weeks.

That said, I was looking for a top case around 7 years ago. My brother recommended the biggest case I could find. I got a Givi E52 for my Suzuki DL1000 VStrom. That same case is on my 2012 S10 today. It's enormously useful. And it's tough having survived a few low speed dumps. I think it looks good. But there is no accounting for taste...

Well, I decided to go with the E52. I think I'm going to add the light kit from admore lighting. As I will be commuting on this bike, the extra visibility won't hurt.

I checked out the 52L Trekker on the Givi site. It's a dedicated top case so doesn't have the extra hinge in the cover that the 46L Trekker has for use as a side case. It also doesn't look any taller than the 46L. And more storage space is always welcome. Looks like a winner!

I went with the Caribou Luggage Pelican Cases ( 35 L top case and panniers ). I rode with them all last year and love them. One of the Biggest reasons I decided to go with the Caribou luggage is the fact they are Guaranteed for life . If they are damaged for any reason ( even if it's your fault ) Caribou will replace them free. They owner of Caribou Luggage is also a very nice guy and was extremely helpful during and after my purchase . I couldn't figure out the instructions to install the panniers , and he walked me through it on the phone .
Here's a picture of my top case and panniers , my wife also says she's comfortable on the back of the bike with the top case on.

I guess it depends on what you want, how you want it to look and what you need to carry as well as how much work you are willing to do to mount it.

Check out Shad top cases, a bit cheaper than Givi, but of the same general design. Lots of people mount a pelican case as a top box too, and used ones in various sizes can be found on ebay, etc. Check the local surplus store for military cases of various designs and sizes and roll your own mount. If the E52 is a great deal, go for it. They will usually hold two helmets, but are ginormous.

This may seem out of left field, but have a look at pelican cases. They are super sturdy, waterproof, lockable and cheaper than motorcycle specific topboxes.

http://www.thepelicanstore.com/Medium-Pelican-Cases-4.aspx

I'm using a 1400 as a topbox and it works pretty well, although it's a bit small in retrospect. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably go with the 1450 or 1500.

To install, I simply drilled holes in the bottom and bolted to the Altrider rear deck (using rubber washers to keep waterproof). Put some cheap foam on the bottom and in the lid to keep things from bouncing around while riding.

I actually considered a pelican case. There is a company that sells them with the kit to attach to a MC mount. The thing I didn't like was the fact that it would only hold 16lbs. The Givis are rated at 22 lbs. That is a good bit when it comes to taking a trip on the bike.

As for the hinges. They seem to be pretty sturdy on the one that I picked up. I don't have it mounted yet but hope to pick up the mount soon.

Check out your owner's manual, the factory rack rating is pretty low too.

Yeah, I know the manual says the rear rack will only hold 11lbs. I'm not sure if that is because of the construction of the rack itself of if that is all they want you to put that far back on the subframe.

Here's what I did with a Pelican 2450 case.

I got a piece of 1/8" aluminum plate the size of the case and I mounted it to a stock rack.
I mounted the case to the plate and drilled three holes through the whole thing so I could get to the
three allen bolts that hold the rack on.

I can lift up the rubber mat in the bottom of the case, unscrew the three allen bolts and the case, plate and rack all
come off together. The allen bolts stay with the rack.It takes about two minutes to take it all off or put ut back on.
I have another rack to put onwhen the case is removed.
I only use the case if I'm going on a trip and need the space.
