Tires - what are we liking these days for mostly street work (80/20 or 90/10)?

Not seeing positive news about the FullBores on ADV... :(
Not my search experience at all on ADV... found many glowing reviews... unless you're referring to some bad reviews for the mostly similar Shinko 705 bias ply tires? In our size they are radials, and V rated.
My personal experience (6K miles and still going) with the rear tire in the same size comes from a fully loaded tour to AK on my Versys... probably about as heavy, loaded for that trip, as the s10 is stock. Six inches of mud on the Dempster. (Face it... that sucked, but it kept the bike upright and moving forward!)

With about 300 miles on the FB tires on my Super Ten now, I'm happy with them on this bike.
AS always... YMMV...

Metzeler Tourance next.

Totally transformed the bike. ::008::
Those don't really look dirt worthy at all...how are they off-road? What kind of mileage do people get out of them? I'm like the OP, 80/20 road/trail so been keeping an eye on these threads for when she needs new shoes.

You may want to consider conti TKC 70s. I came off k60s and hated them. The 70s are very good on the road and behave like road tyres. Wet weather grip is exceptional. Dirt and gravel is quite ok as well. A good compromise for me. Don't know about wear just yet.

Many thanks gang. As I narrow down my route, I'll know which direction to go in. Might be worth keeping the TKC 80s on her, though I suspect they may not last the entire trip, or be so worn while I'm in California as to be compromised (well, the rear, anyway). I'm also considering a combo. Maybe the TKC 80 front and a TKC 70 rear. I have a set of K60s, so could easily do a mismatched set with the K60 rear, too. But I'm not as big a fan of the K60s as many. They're fine enough tires, but have shown me a lack of traction in a few cases (first hand), once resulting in me going down. Tires are only partially to blame, IMO, as skill, choice and environment play a role, too. My off was on a gravel road with some grass. No biggie, but a front knobbie would have held the line better in that instance.

So, I know from my actual riding experiences, in my use cases, the K60s are ok, but not exceptional. That said, its easy to see why people like them.

I'm running the Shinko 804/805 combo now. They work really well off road. I have about 1700 miles on them & the rear is about half gone. The front still looks new. I have my next tire choice down to either the Shinko 705 or the new Pirelli scorpion trail 2's. Maybe do a 705 on the rear until the front 804 wears out. I liked the stock Battlewings a lot. They did take me anywhere I wanted to go and lasted till about 7000 miles.

From originals (6k miles) to K60's for Alaska (12k), to Anakee 3 (yuck 8k), to Tourance (10k), now Tourance Next. No complaints about the next although I have yet to see mileage.

Don't forget option 43, you know where you will be in CA, have a shop schedule you for a tire change and have them pre-order tires of choice! Depending on where you will be some of us can offer suggestions on good locations or volunteer assistance with the matter in a garage.

I have 8k on my stock Bridgestone. I guess I should look at getting some new tires. I have plenty of tread left, but if you guys are replacing them at 7k, I best have a look.

I have ridden two sets of these in PNW and would say I trust em in the wet better than others. You might only get 7-8K out of the back tire, but they WORK better than Battlewings and Metzler. Really close to Metzler Tourance in overall feel, but I like Dunlap.

Next set on my 2014 will be these once I burn up the K60's - and yes I have alot of miles to do before that happens.

I managed to find two more sets of Anakee 2 at my local Michelin dealer. I was so happy that I bought both of them.

Went with the TKC-70s - they arrived today.

Given the route options I'm considering at this point, I see mostly asphalt with some graded gravel roads possibly in the mix. Final planning is this weekend, though even without the gravel, the TKC-70s are going to be smoother on the highway and should last the entire trip.

Now I have 4 sets of tires for the S10...lol

Stock Bridgestones that came on it (at least I think they're Bridgestones). K60s, TKC-80s and the TKC-70s.

I think the TKC-80 rear only has another thousand or so miles in it, maybe, and it starting to get low on tread block, so offroading will be tougher. The others are low mileage with loads of tread left. Nice to have options, as I may try a front TKC-80 front/TKC-70 rear combo after this trip for forest road work.

Dunlop Trailmax TR91. This tire is supposedly an 80/20 tire. I currently have 2000 miles on a new set, front & back and I like them. They seemed a little hard at first but after they were roughed in they seem to be a good tire. I have ridden through a couple rain storms and didn't have any issues in the handling. I haven't rode on dirt with them so can't comment on how they would handle.

I haven't seen them available in North America yet? Seen a few early reports from across the pond. I was hoping they'd make it this way by now to replace my Distanzia's, but they haven't that I've found. I went with Shinko 705s for now.

Note: All new tires feel good compared to a pair of spent tires.

Recently had a pair of Bridgestone Battlax A40's installed.
... the turn in is very good, smooth and quick.
... rolling in and out of turns is as advertised, smooth and even.

Don't have very many miles on them and don't want to bad mouth them.
... they are designed with stiff side walls to keep the tires cool. I am finding them to make the road/ride rough. This does not make me happy.

More too come.

Hi Folks

Tried a lot of dual purpose tyres and as I don't go off road , intentionally anyway, they are ok , didn't like the Battlewings or trailwings the most had them on a Triumph tiger and 800 GS BM , Honda Varadero, no confidence in them in the wet. In fact the Varadero Owners club call the Trailwings 'death wings' !

Anyway the point of my post here is , if you do not go off road then by far the best tyres I have every ridden on are the new Michelin Pilot Trail 4.'s..awesome . Good stability , brilliant grip in the wet and dry. As they wear down ,I found, they did not 'flat off' like other not only dual purpose tyres but Road tyres like Bridgestone 023's too.

Had a set on my previous Varadero and have now put a set on my S10 as I had no confidence in the O/E Bridgestone Battlewings , as I said been there done them and didn't like em , particularly as they wear noooo.

So Pilot Trail 4's No idea how they are off tarmac but by Crikey they are good on . :)

Cheers

Oh man... I went with TKC-70's. A GS riding friend was praising them sooo much. Well after ~ 1,000 miles I am truly amazed! All road miles! These tires are performing fantastically! No chicken strips left touching the left hero ball and the toe of my right boot. These tires are the best I've run in 111,000 miles on two Tenere'!
I'm ordering another set now so that I have them on hand when I need them!

I thought maybe I should update my experience with the Full Bore tires on the S10. I now have 6K miles on the rear... and it's done. Quite a bit of tread left on the front. I rode the tires on twisties, on gravel, and some fairly nasty double track, and they were just fine. I did a 3500 mile tour on the tires, mostly blacktop but not much interstate, and they were great. They got a little noisier as they wore, but I'm very satisfied, especially taking into account the initial $160/pr cost. I'll probably replace the rear with another of the same in the spring (riding season here is pretty much done, and they've closed Independence Pass for the winter!)
