I don't understand!!??   WTF!!!

On my 2012 Super Tenere which I had 68,808 miles on when I sold it I would get usually between 5,000 and 6,000 miles on rear tires. I loved the Tourance (regular not EXP not NEXT).

I'm on my third set, well I'm putting on my fourth set of tires on my 2014ES. It came with Bridgestone and I hated them BUT I got like almost 9,000 miles on them. I went back to my stand by Metzler Tourance and I got just over 3,000 miles on the first one and now the same with this last set!!

What's up? I always ran 33lbs front and 36lbs rear.

I've been playing with the ES suspension and use Soft for my DS = easy Forest/gravel roads. Then I use STANDARD for most road riding UNTIL I get to the twisties which well to be honest I live in the middle of the twisties then I go to Hard and S mode.

Pretty much I ride it the same as I did the 2012... ??? HMMM???? WTF!!

Got ideas?

Brick, I don't know if the Tourance is load rated but the BattleWing is load rated with an "E" indicator. The BW for a GS uses a "G" as the indicator. You might check to see if you are purchasing the correct Tourance for your ES.

I run F 35 R 41 all my tires.

I believe there is a thread about Tourances now being made in China? You might check to see if the replacements you bought are those. BTW, I hope that I get 9,000 out of my BW's, as they were my preferred tire on my 2012, but I never got more than 6500 out of the rears. The only other tires I tried on that bike were PR3's and I didn't like them. Only at 4,000 now with the BW's on the ES and they still look good.

I would be looking for a problem with the tires first. The fact that you got 9000 miles out of the stock tires tells you that it is not the bike.

Here is the post by kingfisher that got one of the Chinese Tourances from Motorcycle Super store:

As the OP, I thought that I would provide follow up on the tire. Quality was fine, but it was in need of replacement by 5000 miles. Longevity was one of the draws for the original tourance in reading about the tire, but it seemed to be about the same as the EXP that came on the bike. I've since gone to the Battlewings and see better mileage with them.

Fred, I would get 8-9,000 miles on BW "E" rated rear tires. My second BW was not "E" rated and I got 4,000 miles. If it was 90-95% freeway when the center would wear out in 6-7,000 miles.

I never got to 7,000 on any of my BW502's either the E or generic, not much difference for me. Always squared off between 6,000 and 7,000. Problem is living here in the flat lands of IL, we wear out the center from all the straight roads. I normally have plenty of rubber left on the sides because I only get to use that part of the tire when I take a trip to the Ozarks, or other areas with twisty roads. I did get to use up some of that on our recent southern Missouri Super Tenere ride, though. ;D

I tried the PR3's since I heard that they got better mileage, but only got 7100 out of the rear, not much more than the BW's at a higher price.

EDIT: I am sure there is a difference in the E labeled BW and non E labeled, but the load rating is the same, 59 for the front and 69 for the rear.

Damn... The two ON the bike AND the new one on the shelf all say, "Made in China" this just sucks! I loved those original Tourance tires! Now I've got to try to find an 80/20 tire! I think all the so called DS tires have gone to 90/10!
Fred thanks for the heads up on the made in china I had missed that.
I think all the tires you all have been talking about ate street tires aren't they? I would like a little gravel capability. We're I live we have a lot of great gravel forest roads that run up the side of the Mtns lots of them ending/starting on/at the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'm sure all of you who have had dirt bike experience would have no problem on these roads on street tires but I never was a dirt bike rider.
Hmmm... Back to shopping for tires. At least now I know to expect 3K out of this next set of Tourances!

Brick,
don't mean to hijack, but why not the metzeler next's?
I ran a set on my FZ9 and loved them (can't report on tire wear though as I sold the bike)
I'm trying a set of next's on my tenere now for the end of season road riding, will see how they fare.

Been running the Full Bore M-40. Nice tire, 70/30 maybe, 6-7k. It's a V rated tire done in the Shinko 705 mold. Front tire sings a bit. Looking at the new Conti tire, also called a 70/30. It's done on a road tire carcass with a nice asymmetrical pattern, rib down the center on the rear. If not too pricey I may give them a try next time around. Should be in stores soon.

I've never even heard of a Full Bore M-40... Oh is it a Shinko? I'll go look. Also I'll check out the Conti whatever it is. Hmmm.. 70/30 could be a bit much?? Don't know until you try, right!

Greg I look forward to your report on the Next. It too is a 90/10 tire.
Thanks
Not much to report. Only logged 700km on the FZ9 with them, but the grip was very good (wheelied in the rain) so this might hurt overall longevity.
On the Ten, the nexts give it tons of confidence on road, and are just ok off road. No issues on gravel, but when it gets wet and sloppy, that's when things go wrong.
will report back before peeling them off.

Nope, just the Shinko molds. Different company. TKC70, it fills a niche between their famous TKC80 and a full on street tire.

Oh a friend just had those put on his Tiger 800 and really likes them on the gravel roads. I do too much road riding for them.
Thanks

Too much road riding? There are folks that have used up K60s on the road... over 10,000 miles, but on pavement. The TKC80 is supposed to do real well on pavement handling wise. Tread pattern shouldn't really be your defining criteria for what will work for you.

There is a group I ride with that are... lets say spirited and well I love it. So could not do K60's for that riding at all! Other than that I would love to try the K60's
