Been away from the forum, but now back. The story goes like this.....in mid May, I collided with a deer on the Blue Ridge Parkway (the second deer hit for me on the Parkway for me in 3 years and my fourth deer incident on a bike in 10 years and the first time I have ever crashed as a result). It was a bright sunny day in the early afternoon. The deer came out about 30 feet in front of me while I was enjoying a spirited ride trying to rehook with some friends after a mandated upset stomach bowel stop. I T-boned the animal dead center, the front of the bike imploded (nothing but the front wheel, brake calipers, the Givi crash bars and the front forks remained on the front---the entire front of the bike was cleared back to the steering stem.

After impact, I remained upright for a while (and thought to myself, "that's the fourth mother effing deer I have hit and I am not going to crash...unbelievable". Next thing I know, I'm low siding the 600 pound S10 porker because I entered a 10 foot wide strip of grass. I wound up sliding in the strip of grass probably 200 feet all the while parallel to a tree line and not hitting a single tree. Near the end of the slide, I, as well as the bike, did one flip. I wound up in a patch of poison ivy (which just happened to be the only "open" space along the tree line) and bike layed 5 feet off the road. The black S10 was totaled, I was pretty much OK except for a twisted knee (which had been injured from eons past). Twelve minutes passed and not single vehicle came by. No cell phone service was avaialble. Eventually vehicles came by to offer help. I told them to drive on down the road a bit and find two bikers and tell them of my plight. My friends cames back and then a portion of the rest of our group (about 20 of us) also showed up. Yada, yada, yada,.....park ranger, AAA towing, etc. all then happened in the next 3 or so hours. I then had to ride bitch on a friends bike down to our destination of Little Switzerland for the next 180 miles......all during prime deer time on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Needless to say, that a stressful mind experience for someone who has only been a pillion maybe for 5 miles in all his life.

Given that was my fourth deer hit on a bike, I serioulsy considered no more street riding. So much so that I bought a sports car (BMW Z4 M Roadster), sold a Goldwing, but kept two KTM enduros. Today I complete the paperwork for my new replacement black S10. I will say my mind still has issues with riding and even driving in a cage down a road where there is little or no open space from the edge of the road to where bambi and others hide. When you think about it, it really is quite scary. I do believe my road riding style will forever be changed when the road meets the forest. The unpredicatble nature of wildlife is amazing, but deer have got to be the stupidist animals when it comes to processing potential collisions with vehicles. Those of you in "wide open" states probably probably don't consider the risk nearly as much as those of us in the northeast.....but after 4 deer hits, all I can say it does screw with your mind.

I just hope I enjoy the new bike as much as the old one. Modding is going to be easy this time...I know what is needed and what goes where without delay.

Yamapa, Thanks for sharing your story and your true thoughts. No one would think anythign badly of you if you did turn in the bike keys and kept to four wheels. I remember going down once and having a heck of a fixation on the road afterwords looking for loose gravel. This happened for a good while after the crash. Be safe and if you think you are really going stir crazy just looking for deer, then maybe the Z4 on the Blue Ridge should be the ride of choice for you. Take care and enjoy your mental recovery in this trasnsition. Be safe my friend!!

Keep on riding , yamaPA . I've been working 20 couple years second shift and see many deer over
the years . At night open spaces doesn't help much . Sometimes I'm up to 80mph and figure when
my #'s up, well mabe my number can be up many times .I'll keep my eyes open but I'll keep riding
until I can't . ::008::

The deer are out of control in Pa. There are now more deer than ever back east and up north. I would be on edge too because 4 deer? Wow! ???

A nice V-plow would work. How much for a carbon fiber model less than 5 lbs in weight?

Thanks for the wishes guys. And yes, the deer on the east coast are out of control this year because last winter was so mild. Even the park rangers on the Parkway are saying such.

Well..after riding trackdays for the past 4 years and racing for 2, I still see people hit deer/turtles/possums on the track (Summit Point in WVa). It is a risk..but i have slowed my road pace quite a bit since riding on the track.

I hit one back in ;09 headed to Key West Florida. I still think about it every time I ride to date, too much actually. I amd totally freaked out by deer. There are just to many of them these days. Gald it turned out good and you are back riding. Four man I can't imagine just that one has all but done me in mentally.

I wonder what the odds are of hitting a 5th deer?

I am very leery, at dusk & dawn, of these "rats with hooves", but I was shocked when I had one bolt across 4 lanes of traffic at midday right in front of me while I was doing about 70. Talk about puckering up!

It's a calculated risk we all must take. Keep riding & stay vigilant!

I've been riding for nearly half a century!
I still haven't hit one. (couple of close calls)
Now I feel like I have cheated somehow. 4 times? Geeze.

I slow down when it rains.
I slow down when the traffic gets thick.
I slow down when 2-up.
I slow down when riding with buddies that have a lessor "pace".

Point is, there are times I alter how I ride. But I still enjoy the ride when being extra careful.

I hope you jump on that brand new S10 and ride.
Just slow down on those rides where the 5th deer might be. :)

And since I have to ride a looooong ways to get to some of my favorite riding spots, maybe you are just farther from the deer-safe areas now.

4 times. That's just not right.

A few months back I rode the Taconic State PKWY in New York twice. Once at 8pm and a week later around 6am. I feared for my life! On my trip back south between Rte 23 and I84 I saw no less than 6 full size dead deer in the road and 12 live ones on or at the edge of the road. Beautiful hwy but no shoulder and on many parts of it the trees run to the edge of the pavement. No place to run off or change a flat if needed. Ill probably avoid it the next time. I'm glad you are ok and back in the saddle.

I have been lucky. I hope you enjoy whatever you choose to ride or drive and that you live to see many many good miles under your wheels. I have yet to hit one and I have seen hundreds.
2-Up riding has 2 sets of eyes, My wife usually see them before I do but I usually am "lone wolf" and on my own out in the BFE which is how I love to ride.

I'm in the Maryland Chapter of Two Wheel Bambi Killers, but only with one on a bike. All our 4-wheeled vehicles but the ex-wife & daughter's current Toyotas have killed at least one. The one I killed with the Ducati did change my riding style, has me follow other vehicles, etc.

Glad you're doing OK.

Virginia Chapter member here. 1 with a F-150. Hit one with my daughter on the back of my KLR. Countless close calls with deer, and my wife nearly hit a bear that came running off a wooded hill side up on Skyline Drive. I consider wildlife to be the biggest danger to us when we're riding around the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Glad it turned out alright for you, YamaPA. Keep your eyes open, they're out to get us.

I hit five in fourteen years of driving, but luckly all in cars or trucks. The road I use to travel to work would almost always have deer carcasses on the side of the road every week. I hit two at different times in my Pontiac Solstice within 7 months. It was in the shop for 6 weeks each time for repairs. My line of sight in that car was about even with the top of a fence post. You couldn't see over the smallest of hills till you crested them. Wasn't the best car for driving in deer country, so I got rid of it. It was a very fun and fast car considering it was a turbo'd 4 cylinder. It's just been a watchful eye and luck of the draw that I haven't hit one yet on a motorcycle. Good to see ya getting back in the saddle ::003::

I have hit 2 deer in my life. 8 point buck in a Truck at night and a mid sized doe also at night on a ATV.

The ATV and the deer one was at the beer lease with me and a buddy on the back going about 10-20MPH down a trail when the doe jumped out of the brush onto the front of the ATV. Scared the heck out of us as much as it did her but we soon started laughing watching this deer riding on the front looking at us and running in place until I hit the binders and she slid forward off the ATV and took off. :)

Wow, 4 Hits on a motorcycle. I have had some close calls on motorcycles and I hope I never hit one.

I can see how that would make you think long and hard before getting back on the street again.

I am glad you came out of it OK and I hope you have no more hits with them thar road rats.

Thanks for sharing that. This is the main reason I eventually gravitated to a bike that works really well at sensible speeds. The only place I open a bike up now is places like...

There is either.
1) Nothing there.
2) You can see them from 10km away.

I have been lucky though. Many near misses a few contacts in the car but no loss of life, either me or the stupid Kangaroos. (Which are the main problem in OZ)

Of course there are the other things that are getting more and more feral lately..
