i have to say i feel sorry for the poor old tenere it just never gets a break ....i just read the road test done by this months MOTORCYCLE SPORT AND LEISURE and they tested the new 2014 model ...the stupid road tester kept complaining about the lack of power while riding around town in what he called "TOWN MODE" well if this person had been anything of a journalist and been doing his job properly he would have know that "T MODE" stands for "TOUR MODE " and "NOT" town mode ... so yet again the tenere gets bad press , it just cannot win can it ?...

ALways funny how sport riders whom are used to power complain. There sure is enough power to keep my modest self at bay. Boy going up a steep hill sure feels good with all the torque and power it doesn't have.

who cares about what some reporter has to say. they are just looking to pinch one group or another. matter of fact if everyone stopped listening to what others have to say and stick to their own opinion about things this reality would positively progress.

I rode a 2014 Tenere ES today and there was no lack of power in any mode. Was impressed with the new mapping. When on the throttle and shifting into 3rd gear you better be paying attention... BIG TORQUE POWER, HUGE SMILE. Gotta wonder what it would do with TC turned off.

Tim have you ridden a previous model with Gen 2 flash? If so, how did the ES compare?

-Regrettably I have not ridden a flashed Tenere. I went back this morning to ride the non-ES 2014 Tenere but they did not have one for demo... so I rode the ES again. Played with the -----Modes and you can definitely tell the difference between S and T.
-With the little time I had on the ES I am not sure I would have it flashed but... at $125 a flash would be worth every cent.
-I also noticed there was very little vibration/rattling at 2800-3300 rpm.
-The transmission seemed to shift more positive but there isn't much to improve on.
-Wish I would have had time to play with the suspension settings. It handled very good through slow twisties and fast sweepers. Held its line very well.
-Brakes were very good as expected.
-The seat was in the low position and I could sit flat footed. I think they had the OEM low seat installed.
-Windshield was good but would have liked to ride with it in different position. I suspect it will be a big plus. Definitely can be tucked out of the way for off-road.
-On the fly adjustments will be a good thing. Asphalt to dirt/gravel with a flick of a couple settings and your feet are still on the pegs. Would be nice if you could save a few suspension maps.
It will out accelerate an R6 but not a R1 or FZ-09 but... neither of them was built to cruise a gravel road at 75 mph and carry substantial luggage.
Would have been nice to see what the sag settings were.

Next demo daze is in Laughlin NV then off to Oregon somewhere.

I think a big part of why the Tenere, and other adventure bikes at times are not rated well is because they often tested with a different purpose in mind.

I didn't even know the adventure market existed until a few years ago, before that I thought you either road street (crotch rocket), dirt, or cruiser.

IF a rider is hopping on a Tenere hoping for a sport bike ride, they will be disappointed.

I put my S10 in for service/ new rear tyre last week and was lent the new MT-09 for the day, wow very impressive, sweet engine and sharp handling BUT my poor old legs went into cramp as soon as I got onto it 'tho they did eventually settle in, ergonomics on the S10 definitely suit the older rider! On the power front I missed the continuous power of my S10 [ yes, it is flashed] without having to go up and down the box or revs.
My point is this - a quick survey of S10 / Adv bike owners reveals a trend towards the more mature rider who like myself is looking for a different riding experience, a point these jour no's miss. We all like to have our life choices endorsed but I now feel quite smug that MY choice is based purely upon my own evaluation of a bloody good bike; one which I intend to duly fettle and hold onto for some time to come especially as retirement beckons!

personally I don't give a rats ass what reviewers say. Usless tits.
Twist the throttle harder, there's plenty of power, flashed, not flashed, csm on or off.
The only time my 'town mode' sees any action is on gravel roads.
otherwise S all the way.

Bike UK did a review of the new ktm 1190. blah blah we loved the power blah blah
but we left it in the lower power mode, because it doesn't make sense to have 145 hp on a trail bike, as it feels odd ??? blah blah...
oh and our tester model ate about 1.5L of oil in 3000 miles, and the enigine might be on its way out... blah blah

Ya, i'll take my underpowered tenere any day, thanks. Put in gas, check that you have air in the tires... and ride the crap out of it.

Here is my initial impression of the big S10.

I picked up a 2012 used last fall when the snow was on the ground and yesterday was my first real ride on it. I did 150 KM after work, 60% rough gravel.

Does this bike have the get up and go that my 950 SM has?? NO. Does it have the get up and go that could have my license taken away on the spot and have me sporting a nice shiny pair of cuffs ?? Absolutely!!

I was extremely happy how the bike was, coming off the 950, wind protection was fantastic, handled the gravel like it was a high speed freeway and felt totally awesome and the whole ride I thought it was the best thing for what I want, can handle the rough roads and handle it very very well, I could sit on it all day and could eat up the miles easily whether paved or not, seemed to be decent on fuel, took 140 KM for the fuel gauge to come off reading full and my right hand was not relaxing, tried to twist the grip off many times.. >:D

I will be loving this bike!! ::001:: ::021::

Like your point!
My thrashing days are over after getting T-Boned on my Triumph 1050 last year I like taking the trails and back roads with less aggression these days, sort of take in the fresh air and views..
But I tend to nosh on it when I ride with others who own four cylinder sport bikes this Piggy can gain some ground fast at take off like my Triple Triumph did but they got me on the top end.

don't discount the FZ/MT-09. With a couple of simple mods, it's a very usable and fun bike.
What kills me on mine (killed..I fixed it) was the slope of the stock seat. I did a free mod on it, and took the pitch away.
With my rear givi bag mounted, a decent set of tires it's the funnest and most useful street bike that I have owned.
The ST still trumps it over all but just. If the 9 motor was in a tenere like set up (frame, wheels etc.) it would be the perfect bike.
