Thanks for posting the pic's Jeff.

That KOA looks like one of the better KOA's.

i want to ride in colorado (off pavement) but i'm not familiar with the routes posted. are they all freeway? or are fire roads and dirt roads labeled in colorado. can someone give me an idea of what kind of riding typically goes on on these gatherings - this one in particular?

#4 takes six hours to do 125 miles over two superb dirt passes. Way above tree line. Freeway to me means at least four lanes, not much of that going on. Every Forest Service and a lot of two track are all named or numbered. We'll have a bunch of locals there and wanna-be locals, I'm sure if you wanted to spend all day every day boppin' around in the dirt that it can be arranged. I think Engineer and Cinnamon Pass will be enough for me.

This is a route I really want to do on my Tenere while in Colorado. I've done it several times om my 530, its no big deal. Maybe a bit more challenging on the Tenere and slower. But IMO this is the best Adventure route by far in that part of Colorado. MapQuest says 16+ hours, thats way overstated, it is a long day for sure,, maybe 8 hours with lunch somewhere, depends on picture takin and flower sniffin! I figured there were at least a few others that would really enjoy this ride as well. I'll probably ride it a couple times while I'm there!
One thing....the road on the map stops just before the top of Imogene Pass for some reason, but it really does gone on over the top. From the top at Imogene Pass its only 10-12 miles to Ouray.
All this also depends on if the roads are open or not!

Did you look at the switchbacks going up to Telluride? Looks very steep and narrow to me.

If Black Bear Road isn't doable 2up you could County Road 8 / 630 Road / Ophir / 145 Telluride. Then you could ride Imogene Pass back to Ouray. The alternate route adds a total of 5 miles. 550 to 145 is 10 scenic miles of dirt/gravel and you would add Ophir Pass to your list. http://goo.gl/maps/qe1Jv

That's a steep and nasty downhill into Telluride from a pass I don't remember the name of,,,Black Bear! pretty famous. Pretty much can't be ridden up by any of us, and going down, some of the steps will destroy our pans. The Most Dangerous Jeep Trail in Telluride

Black Bear Pass into Telluride for the most part is not that difficult. The "Steps" are solid rock and steep going down, the big deal is the mental part of the shear drop just on the left side of the trail, at this point you can see Telluride several hundred feet below! Just hang right along side the rock wall, for sure you do need to pick the right line or you will bottom out. There are a couple fairly steep and tight switchbacks further down.

Would be nice to say I did Black Bear Pass into Telluride. After watching some videos, I'll admit that it's a little much for me. I've been living most of my life in mostly flat arias.
Those who want to do it better do your 1and2 physiologic necessities up on top :), I don't think you can get of the bike as you coming down.

I've done Black Bear a few times on skis. It's expert terrain for sure but fun if you know what you are doing. I don't want to do it on a Tenere without doing it on a smaller, lighter, bike first.

I have gone down and up Black Bear pass many times over the last 20 years on dirtbikes. Last year I had no problem going up Black Bear on a KTM 530 EXC-W. This year I did Engineer & Cinnamon passes on the Tenere without any issues. I think it was easier on the Tenere then when I did them on my on my 2004 KTM 950. The Tenere ran a lot smoother with the injection. the KTM was running rich at the higher altitudes.
Going down Black Bear on a Tenere should not be much of a problem for an experienced rider. Hopefully I can find out next Summer.

Agreed that it looks like a good ride for an experienced ST pilot. Lookng at a couple of other videos I thought that it looked like a pretty good KLR run. Only thing I noted that might be a concern for us is that we might be pretty early n the season for a ride that way. Looks loike late July/early August is best. We might be snowed out of this particular ride. Still, I'd like to give it a go is we get a chance.
