My personal choice would be Ouray

Don't think there is a campground there though? Ridgway might have a campground....and it's like 30 minutes from Ouray-ish?

All you old guys would appreciate the hot springs in Ouray after long days of riding

There are hotels, a couple bed and breakfast places and condo's for rent in Ouray, the one we usually rent sleeps 8....6 if no one shares a bed

I understand the desire for Gunnison on the surface, but Ouray is wayyyyyyy better

Is there a KOA in Ouray ? Ive stayed at many KOA's and they typically clean and nice. Ive spoke to a good hand full of people that are camping. So a good clean, well maintained camp ground is probably a must.. Gunnison does have a KOA...

Someone out there is gonna have to reply to that....there *might*be a campground there, but I can't say for sure. I recall something on the right hand side as you come into town near the hot springs, but I never paid much attention

Internet search says yes on a KOA in Ouray

The BIG COLORADO 2013 summer gathering !

There is a KOA near Ridgeway, which is VERY close to Ouray.

If by some miracle I have an ST by then, I would love to participate!! The "Gateway Loop" would be a fun ride, if the weather isn't too warm.

My 2 cents - the KOA in Gunny is nice enough for a KOA and the owner is a great guy - the airport - I doubt I heard a plane land there the 2 mights I spent during a MTB race a few years ago so no real issue there. That being said, Ouray is waaaaay nicer and for those that want to see mountains while they are hanging around Ouray is it. Nothing wrong with Gunnison (and Crested Butte) but as noted, it is a high plains town.

You could also do Silverton - check the RMAR 2012 thread over on ADV for details on where they held that - campground and hotel across the street.n That being said, Ouray is a bit bigger with a few more services.

Mid week? No thanks, I can spare a day or two and scoot out Wed/Thursday night but I can't take a week off for this. Probably would be able to get a few more CO folks if it went at least partially over a weekend.

Late June is good - before that and you will almost certainly encounter pass closures at higher elevations and certainly snow on dirt passes ...

For some reason copy & paste isn't working... the Amphitheater Campground in Ouray sounds nice. No mention of showers though. 8400' elevation. 35 sites, no mention of number of tents per site.

Streets & Trips says 1000 miles door to door.

CO is only one two states away from me - granted it's arguably the most boring slab ride of all time, but still. if the ozark fall color tour bodes well for Sara and I - i can say we could definitely be marked down

So I go away to BC for a few days and there's 5 pages of posts on this already!

Anyway, given I can get the time off work next year Jenny & I will be there. For us it's more or less the same distance as Whitehorse was, just in the opposite direction. No gnarly off road stuff like I did in BC over the weekend though - well not two-up anyway.

Ouray sounds good!

Here is a little info... We are gathering as fast as we can.. The dates are the same. We are looking for a hotel or loacation that we can have a "Tenere Dinner"... Hotels are sharpening there pencils and slowly getting back to me...

Ouray - KOA 32.50 a night..
Gunnison - KOA 25.00 a night

Both sound like that have the same things.... It looks like we are doing more home work in Ouray..........

Not sure if I can make it yet so i am not signing up on the list yet. However I did want to pass on some information about where I stayed in 2011. Ridgeway State Park was very nice for camping as well. Has a lake to cool off and swim with great scenery. It also has a few Yurts for those who want to camp but not have to carry tents. Plus they lock and are dry when the rainy season hits for Western Colorado nights. Plus each yurt sleeps 6 people. Might be another option.

I'm planning to be in Utah late spring 2013, perhaps I can add this to the end of my trip.

A nice touch would be to make an arrangement with a shop, near the event, to supply tires and mounting service at a group or discount rate. This would be useful to those who will want to install more dirt appropriate rubber after slab'n it to get there.

Regards, Paul

Im sure we can work this out. We have arranged this with other events...
On a side note, install some K60's and you should be fine and have a ADV tire that will work when you get there.. ::008::

This caught my attention: Anyone been to the Ouray Brewery?

Yup, had my birthday dinner there. It is very good! Service was a bit slow/spotty but we showed up unannounced, post Engineer's Pass ride, big group, like 14 of us. I think this should be added as a place to go to. Good food, good drinks.
