I have some experience replacing battery modules in a 2nd gen Prius. Bought new in 2005 by my daughter-in-law, years later she bought a new one and my son started using the car. Somewhere between 150k and 200k, the check engine light came on and the code pointed to a bad traction battery. Toyota wanted $3500 - $4000 to replace it. I used a code reader that showed the battery bank voltages, and one bank showed low. There are 14 banks, each with 2 modules, 6 cells per module. I took the battery out and found one module with a small hole and burn marks. A used ebay replacement cost $15 back then, and fixed it up fine for a number of years. My son eventually got another car and gave the Prius to my other son's wife. After another year or so, another module failed, and I replaced it for $21 this time. Still going strong with between 250k and 300k miles.
Easier to replace a battery module in that car than to adjust the valves on my Tenere.

In the last month or so, I can't count the number of people that have told me that they're about getting a motorcycle due to the cost of fuel. I warn them. Bikes are not "cheaper" to operate than a car. They use less fuel, but that's about it. Oil changes are close to equal. But tires . . . . tires cost more, and last less miles. As do brake pads. And when was the last time you synched the valves in your family truckster. I tell them to go get a used Corrolla, Altima, Focus etc. The initial investment in the car might even be less than the bike. No need for a helmet. The fuel mileage will be close, and the upkeep will be way less. And weather is nowhere near an issue the way it can be on a bike. It should be noted that none of the people that I've talked to want a bike, because they want a bike.

I look at switching from gas to electric in the same way. Before switching, add up what each is going to run you in the long run. Especially if your current transportation is payed off.

I have only been in a few EV's with friends and only know how the Tesla charging system works. Do any of the other ones charge nearly as fast?
...
It's all about being able to use the fast chargers. For instance in the Chevy Bolt, the fast charger ability was an option, which fortunately was in the one I bought. If I use 115VAC from my garage it can take a day to recharge, but if I go to a commercial "fast charger" it takes less than 2 hours & is competitive with a Tesla. I'm probably going to put a 2440VAC charger in the garage and it will be closer to the commercial speed.

It was my understanding that the Tesla would charge on the 115vac from empty to full in 12 hours. Which would be reasonable, and easy to live with. 24hrs is a little much.

Only if you have a 240V charger, as 115 gives roughly 3 miles/hour. Surprising, as the Bolt charges at 12A & gives twice that rate.

Then there's the Nissan Leaf, 35 hours to full charge on 110V charger, 8-11 hours on 220V and .75 hours on 440V. We have some neighbors that have one, 2012 model. They used to complain about gas prices, now they complain about their electric bills. They are too cheap to buy and have a 220V charger installed. The battery must be nearing the end of it's useful life, their range is down to 100 miles. Dealer quoted them a price of $4000 to upgrade the battery. I might be able to pick this one up pretty cheap. Another project.

If you want to charge an electric vehicle overnight, you need a 240v 50 amp service to the charger. You can only draw 80% current capacity continuously, so, you get 40 amps at 240v to the vehicle which is 9600 watts. If you have a 96 kilowatt-hour battery it will take about 10 hours to charge. The battery you are charging won't be fully dead, but you don't get 100% charge efficiency either.

That car actually has a decent chance of keep up with the bike. (depending on bike's cc) But back in the day I got pulled over on my FJ. 72mph in a 55. Deputy asked me why I was going so fast. I was smart enough to not tell him how fast I could have been going. Didn't matter, still got the ticket. But, it was my last one.

On a golf tour in Ireland, Tiger Woods drives his BMW into a petrol station in a remote part of the Irish countryside.
The pump attendant obviously knows nothing about golf, greets him in a typical Irish manner completely unaware of who the golfing pro is.
Top of the mornin’ to yer, sir” says the attendant.
Tiger nods a quick “hello” and bends forward to pick up the nozzle.
As he does so, two tees fall out of his shirt pocket onto the ground.
“What are dose? asks the attendant.
“They’re called tees” replies Tiger.
“Well, what on the god’s earth are dey for?” inquires the Irishman.
“They’re for resting my balls on when I’m driving”, says Tiger.

“Fookin Jaysus”, says the Irishman, “BMW thinks of everything
Mate of mine did some caddying on the pro golf tour. Got a gig on the Thai open. Met said golfer at Bangkok airport and asked..."have you been practicing"? Golfer replied...I've hit more balls than Elton Johns' chin.
