I help a lot of people out by working on their bikes. I have helped Mike with several of his bikes and he was always talking about a KTM he had in his shed taken apart. I suggested bringing it over every time we talk but it never happened. Well, he called to see if I could prep his XR400R for sale and I stopped by. He suggested that I take the KTM as payment. Well, I don't need another bike but it's hard to turn down a basically free one.

Mike had started collecting parts so this wasn't a difficult puzzle to put together. There were a couple small pieces and several fasteners missing but I got it into running/riding condition in a morning. I put oil in the gearbox, mixed up some fuel and it started in one kick. I will be taking it out to the desert this weekend hopefully. 2002 KTM 250SX, it really packs a punch and I don't have the talent to ride it anywhere close to it's limits.

Good memories of going on dates with the family barge.
;)
I learned to drive and had to take my driving test in my Dad's new '71 LTD wagon. Dad had been a Marine DI and although we also had a '69 Cougar, he said that would make the test too easy. It had a 429 and could pass anything but a gas station.

We had one of these in "family truckster" green. I remember it was called a Suburban also. Apparently prior to Chevrolet trademarking the name.

1977 KZ650 (shop demo), 1964 Safari Wagon in 1978. 17 years old, living the dream. Working as a mechanic at a motorcycle shop while attending (and skipping) high school. I had money, a girlfriend, and wheels. in 1980, my brother broke the frame on the wagon going airborne (rusty frame). Good times. Hard to believe that was almost 43 years ago. Harder to believe that I'm almost 60! (My sister was in a college photo class, and this was one of her projects.)

I took the free KTM out this weekend for a shakedown run. It performs really well, took me a while to get used to riding a two stroke again but by the end of the weekend I was convincing myself that it could be by desert bike. Needs a side stand, skid plate and maybe a flywheel weight. Lighting wouldn't be bad either.

Are you considering selling?
No, the guy I got it from gifted it to me to use. If I decide that I am not going to use it I would give it back to him.

While bringing out the little boy in all of us, the Surgeon General has decided that sitting next to targets can be bad for your health.
LOL - j/k
True statement. I really shouldn't have been on the bombing range and do my best to avoid it. Got a bit turned around and ended up close to a bunch of the target vehicles out there. The military has signs put up, but many of them get tore out. I have brought helicopter detachments out there when I was active duty so I am familiar with the conditions when bombing is going on and was certain none was happening that day.

Still.....shouldn't have been there but it does make a good picture!

I got a loaner compression tester from Oreilly auto. It read 60lbs. I knew that was BS from kicking this bored CR500. I broke down and bought a good one. My CR500 has 170lbs comp after kicking it about 10 times. I told the guy at Oreilly it was a heart attack gauge and didn’t work. He just gave me a look and put it back in the loaner junk. SMH1612656127047.jpegThis how they should come from the factory. Compression release. Best $150 I’ve spent on this bad boy.
