REI Half-Dome. Two person tent. Packs small. We can put it up in the dark with headlights. Very well made.

That's from this weekend up in Mammoth Lakes. Can't see much of the tent but ain't I cute? :)

Same hear. Holds up well in a storm. A lot of room for a single. You can store all your stuff in it during the day.

I've have a Eureka backcountry 2 for solo trips. I've been thinking of a GoLite Shangrila 5. You can use the outer tarp in bug free weather or use with a bug free nest. Light weight for the space only one pole and you don't even have to use it if you can tie it to something above. The space is attractive to me. Stand up to take a wizz in the middle of the night.

Has anyone ever tried one?

no floor? no thanks
That tent does have a floor. But, at that price point I'd still prefer a 2 or 3 pole free standing tent. Sometimes you have to setup in places with very soft ground. I see advantages and disadvantages to the one-pole design but my persona choice is a side opening, free standing, 2 person tent w/1 vestibule..

My Cabela's Deluxe XPG 2-person tent is great for solo trips. It packs down into a stuff sack about 19" long, so it tucks away very nicely in my Trax pannier. I think my particular model has been discontinued, but Cabela's still makes an XPG ultra light tent which is similar.

One very nice 2-person backpacking tents I've come across, and currently use, is the Mountainsmith Morrison 2 tent.

You can them them now for just over $100 which is a good deal for a good quality tent.

They have color coded poles and the fly corners are also color coded so it makes the setup very fast.

It has a built in attic and a couple pockets.

One of the coolest - pun intended - parts about this tent is you have an inner door cover so if you have the vestibules open and tucked out of the way and the doors uncovered - mesh - for air flow but it stars raining a little, you can just zip up the inner door covers. I've yet to find a back packing tent this affordable with this option.

This is typically the tent I'll use in the summer simply for this easy way to open/close the air flow without getting out of the tent.

It doesn't come with the footprint but I'd spring for it if you were getting this tent.

Also, the tent pole sections are just 18" long!!!! so very easy to pack anywhere.

I've got a Mountain Hardware Lightpath 2 that is a little small for anything beyond a 3 day trip. My rule of thumb is, a 2 person tent will sleep 1 comfortably and a 3 person, 2 comfortably, etc...

The Half Dome 2 looks to be in the middle of that rule. More than ample room for one + pannier storage inside, but enough room to sleep two and throw the panniers inside during the day and perhaps have a little "struggle snuggle" throwdown with the misses once the sun sets. :-*

Thoughts? Can anyone confirm the REI halfdome theory?

I prefer the free standing tents w/side openings as I find them easier to setup and move if you don't like the initial section of land and also much easier to get in/out of. My 1st tent was one you got in/out of from one of the ends and it's just more 'crawling' and not as convenient so I think the halfdome would be fine. I think there's even a half dome plus that's a little longer?

Free standing is a must. Thanks for reminding me of that fact, which my lightpath 2 does not have.

The 2 side entry doors of the Half Dome is a nice feature, as well.

We just had a hurricane go through Nova Scotia last weekend. I was at the Horizons Unlimited gathering an one thing I noticed was that only two tents rode out the storm. We had gusts of 135 kmh (80ish mph) and only the Marmot tents could take the beating. I know what my next tent will be!

For adventure riding, we use the Hennessy Hammock ( http://hennessyhammock.com/ ), it's lightweight, keeps the bugs n critters out, no more wet tent during heavy rain, and it packs up within a few minutes.
For haulin' the dirt bike, I really like the Adventure 1 truck tent ( http://adventure1trucktent.com/ ), easy to set up, and you don't have to remove camping gear from pickup bed prior to set up. The bunks are from Disc-O-Bed ( http://discobed.com/ ).
