Tenere vs Tracer (FJ09) Did the new Yam stand a chance?

One bike left to get out me system after test riding all the other possibilities last summer to replace my previous much loved TDM900. The Tracer... Rode it yesterday n wow what a great bike. Engines a right stomper, ragging it hard the bike was shaking it's head in anger. Wheelied it in 3rd... ;D The bike rode silky smooth compared to alot n the handling was assured. Anchors did there job. Town riding was un fussed n the cans sounded rather sexy even in standard trim.... But ya know what? Makes no odds. Was excited to get back on me lovely big fat Ten. After getting back on board, Did another 60 miles along small backroads in the beautiful UK Peak District. Just felt right.., planted, sure footed, comfy, relaxed n dependable misters bike that feels like an event bike everytime I cast throw me leg over it. I don't need the manic action any more. Sure way for me to suck soup in hospital or get close with Nottinghamshires finest crims. ??? Did the new Yam stand a chance? Nah.., not really, for this Super Ten worshiper... ;D

Nice quick review, tenbob. I think the new MT/FJ-09 is a very attractive package, but would find it very hard to give up the big Ten for one. I can't imagine the FJ being better for the wide open spaces where I live, where 500 miles at a whack is an easy day.

I'd consider adding an FJ-09 to my stable beside the Tenere...but then again, I've always admired overkill as an approach to things...

I've had a Super Ten for 3 years and I had planned to keep it for some time - I had my last bike a R1150GS for 11 years.

A recent illness has changed my plans and I am getting a new MT09 Tracer next month - the bikes have similar performance and touring capability. The thing that made me like the Tracer enough to order one is the 50kg difference in weight. I think I will be more likely to get the Tracer out of the garage for a ride as it is a lot easier to move around.

It will be sad to see the Super Ten go as I think it is a great bike but one has to compromise as biology is a fúcker at times...

I can't behave on that new bike, plus it feels to small for my 6'4" figure. That said it's one he'll of a bike, for the asking price.

Now that they've done the naked version and sport-touring version of this bike, how long can it be before we see the adventure version? It'd be an ideal platform.

Not that I'd trade my S10 for it. Just interesting.

Reminds me of a story about an old guy that once hit up a young sexy chick! :))

The Tracers gonna make alot of folk happy... if they can sort the screen out or live with it as is... I got major windbast no matter what height the screen was. Getting back on the Tenere really brought it home that I've got it quite good in this department. The seat was a bit to firm for my liking and long before the hour mark arrived on the testride my rump was asking for mercy. Found the seat shape not overly comfy either, cutting into my inner thighs some. Fairing protection I thought look similar to my old TDM so was hoping for it to be reasonably good. Actually as the pace rose I found my kness being forced out my the windblast. The Ten has this area covered to good effect too... Posture wasn't the best for me and found lower backache creep its way in. Felt there wasn't as much legroom as I'm getting accustomed to on the Ten or maybe its cus the footpegs are set somewhat behind which gives a more sporty stance to the Tracer.., but I'm after sheer comfort which brings me back to our Tenere... But.., this was my personal take on the bike, obviously. I really wanted to like it and believe it or not I do, as I gave plenty if praise to start this thread. Its just not a Tenere n while I've got the fibre to push the big girl about the S10 remains King.., or is it Queen? ::) Would still have a Tracer as me second bike tho! ;)

Different tools for different tasks. The FJ-09 being more sport touring oriented, and is being promoted by Yamaha as such, with more power, lighter weight.

Tenbob,

You just built a convincing case for the Tenere to be the BEST at so many things.
Lots of folks say the Tenere is "good at everything, but not great at any"

I say it is "the Best at so many, and really good at almost everything else"

I had a really good look at an FJ-09 Tracer in our local Yamaha dealer this afternoon and despite all the rave reviews and positives about it, all I could think was………."When is it going to start moving around, stand upright and turn itself into a robot?"

I got to ride the FJ-09 at my local dealer. A blast to ride, but I don't think I would strap everything on it and ride to Denver in one day. felt really exposed and of course not as comfortable as my S10. Interesting bike, but no replacement (no matter what you do to it) for my Tenere.

Not with that wider, heavier, smaller, less torquey engine than the Tenere has. You put longer travel suspension, bigger tank, etc. on the FJ-09 to "adv" that bike and it would lose its weight advantage too. Plus, that wider engine would have to ride higher in the chassis and you'd have an off-road handfull, imho.

I am not about to trade the S10 for the FJ-09. I may however have to buy one! Kind of a cool bike. Lower it down to the same height as an FZ-09 and make it into a sort of supermoto sport touring bike. Be wicked cool.

I'm probably going to trade my Street Triple for an FJ. I like the Triumph a lot but want more room and a more upright riding position. The FJ will give me both without having to give up a triple. ::018::
