Thought I would share my trip I just took to Nova Scotia and eastern Canada.

11 consecutive days covering 6175 miles, 6 days visiting parents, then back to Florida for a total of 8395 miles. Didn't think I would be saying this, but enjoy riding the XTZ more than my BMW RT, just feels like I am more in sync with the Tenere.

Wish I was back on the west coast, would have loved to do a western Canada trip. More mountain lakes than central Canada. Nova Scotia and parts north of Quebec City had some nice mountains and scenic views.

Great photos, looks like the weather was on your side, at least in the pics. How well did your tires hold up, brand? If you were to do the trip again what would you change, bring or leave behind?

Good Luck

It looks like we had some common ground. I drove out from California a couple of years back.

I hope your trip was as good as mine...

Yes good weather in Canada and nice and cool compared to FL (most days between 45 and 75 degrees). Had a blast.

I used to live in Chico and Redding in the 80s and 90s... always had to make a trip to Gilroy for the Garlic Fest, sure miss that dark chocolate covered garlic. :)

I did put on a fresh Bridgestone Battle Wing BW502 for the rear and went with my trusty Shinko 705 on the front which already had 10k miles on it. The Shinko was replaced in MN (13,500 miles on it) and an oil/filter change. The Bridgestone will go about another 4k (12,000 miles usually).

Next time I take this trip I will bring my hiking boots. I seem to always forget one item, this time it was the boots. :)
Some of the hiking trails would have been more comfortable with proper footwear and would have been able to take the three hour hike I had to pass on.

My first trip to unfamiliar places is used as a scouting... now I know how long it takes me to get there, where I want to go, and how long I will stay next time.

Camping up in Canada was easy and convenient. First come first serve and during the week had plenty of space. $20 CAN = about $17 US so it was even cheaper for me! LOL.

Enjoy when you go,
Jimmy.

Nice, great looking trip, thanks for sharing the pictures.

Considering how far you rode for this NS trip, I don't have any hesitation saying this next thing...

Plan for Newfoundland on your next long ride. After I did my first NS ride I was planning to go back for another. DCstrom recommended doing Newfoundland. Basically it's go to NS, get on a boat for 6 or 16 hours (depending on which side you go to), then arrive in a whole different world. It was good advice and I'm happy to pass along his wisdom.

If you can't be on the west coast, you should see the best of the east...and it's impossible to get more east in North America than Newfoundland.

I was originally planning on the ferry trip from Sydney until I saw the long time needed. Even thought about heading towards Labrador from Quebec City. Both options would have taken too much time from my plans.

This is already on my list for my next trip. From pictures and stories I found, looks like it would be a worthwhile journey.

Thanks.

Ladrador is flat and boring and the Blackflys are bloody awful.

I'd also recommend the Newfoundland trip. I opted for the Port Aux Basques ferry that took about 8 hrs. that crossing. Then it's about 500 miles into St John's. One of the locals warned me about the many, many moose on the roads (called them Newfoundland Speedbumps). He claims that the moose population outnumbered the humans. I have no reason to doubt him but they were all hiding from me during my trip.

Funny thing that. What year is your RT? I was really "in sync" with the S10 but thought I'd enjoy the better weather protection of the RT. My '13 RT is a bit quicker but that's like comparing tractors at the dragstrip. I would love to have the opportunity to ride them back to back through some of my favorite roads. S10 is pretty good in the twisties and didn't use any oil where the RT does use 1/4 quart every 2000 miles. In the end I guess I should have stuck with the S10

I had a '99 RT... just didn't feel like spending all that money on a GS and having to deal with the costs associated with BMW Service Intervals until the warranty was up.

The BMW RT is an excellent motorcycle, I just wanted to "feel" the ride - RT is like a Cadillac and the XTZ is more like a Subaru... they both get you where you are going, but one helps you remember the journey. I found many times on the RT that I would forget portions of a long ride, it was just that comfortable.

Though I wish the XTZ was a bit lighter, it is easier for me to turn sharply... can turn around in half a road where I needed both lanes to turn the RT around. :)

I bought the '13 RT used, GS was never an option. Sat on a GS before I bought the S10 it was ok, sat on the S10 and loved it. As far as AdvTouring bikes go the S10 is pretty much the only way I'd go.
