I'm planning to have a look at the side stand switch and maybe blast it out with some contact cleaner, but I'm doubtful that's the issue as there's no sensitivity to bumps otherwise. I'm beginning to think this is just a characteristic of big 270 degree, "lean jetted", light flywheel twins. The uneven firing intervals means there's a relatively long period where the crank is more or less coasting until the next push from the pistons.

To an earlier question, nope no fault codes. In my experience you don't really have to check for them as they appear front and center on the panel.
Yeah these 270’s definitely don’t fire as soon as the crank starts to turn with the starter.

I would like to disconnect mine but probably some other issues would crop up. Side stand switches are for amateurs.

I have not had my ST stall while in motion like WJBertrand did, but it does stall on a regular basis when taking off from a full stop (Or at least it used to. I have trained myself to over-gas it at take-off). Pull up to a stop sign, or waiting at a red light, get the green, begin take off, and "huff" it goes right out. It starts right back up, and I head out. I know it is not mismanagement of the clutch or throttle; it's more like the bike is very lean at idle and you catch it just right, and throttle application causes it to flame out. The bike is currently at a Yamaha dealer for this very reason.

Ha! Got a phone call from the Yamaha dealer while I was typing this. Service Tech says they test rode my bike and it stalled on them. They guess, as I did, that EPA restrictions call for lean settings, and that contributes to stalling. Tech is recommending an after-market re-flash. I'm sure many on this forum will agree. I will try to keep you informed...
Yip, that’s what sorted it for me, a re-flash.

Case in point. An older bike I had that didn’t have a side stand switch ended up on its side as a result. I had parked in in neutral to go into a store. When I came back and thumbed the starter, the bike leapt forward causing the side stand to fold and wham, down she went. A bystander ran to my assistance the help lift her and told me some kids had been climbing around on it.

To the best of my dated knowledge, fuel injected motors do shut off injectors at closed throttle above a certain rpm due to emissions regulations. The Yamaha FZ1 2nd gen with fuel injection had this issue which could cause a lurch when rolling back into the throttle and the injectors start pulsing again. That doesn't sound like the problem here. Fuel injection also greatly retards timing when the rpms dip to a low level to prevent igniting the fuel mix and trying to turn the motor backwards or bend the rods. I'd imagine it's a mix of lean fuel injection and low rpm timing retard that puts it on the edge of stalling when you're shifting at idle. Electronic throttles or throttle by wire can end up with some jumpy voltage readings near closed that could be playing into it.

Although what happened to you may be an added benefit of a sidestand switch, the real reason they exist is so accidentally leaving it deployed and riding off doesn't turn your first left hand turn into a unexpected potential highside!

I have an old Volvo that stalled when coming to a stop. I replaced the mass airflow sensor and it hasn't done it since.
Could a faulty MAF sensor be what's causing your issue?

I would expect a sensor failure to set a fault code.

Mine (Gen2) would stall leaving from a stop at times. But never from an off-throttle while riding. An off idle stumble was very small, but noticeable. After the flash (AVC), the off-idle situation is gone and I have not had stalling issues (unless they were induced by my ham handed inputs.)

Well it's been a few months since my scare and now 4000+ miles later there has not been a recurrence of this off-throttle, clutch in stalling behavior. I did check a few things like the side stand switch and cleaned out the ignition switch with some plastic safe contact cleaner. Nothing unusual found. I'm putting it down to a stray cosmic ray...

This is going to sound crazy but put some ethanol treatment in with your next tank of gas and it will probably help eliminate the problem. A small amount of moisture in your fuel will cause the issue of bikes dying off idle to worsen. I use Star Bright but I don’t think there is a world of difference between brands. I’ve had the issue on a couple of bikes and a mechanic told me to try it. So far it seems to work. I use it once or twice until the issue goes away and then every couple of months as a preventative.

Alot of times mc's and autos random decel stalling is caused by excessive buildup on the TBs and throttle plate. Also IAC. With the miles Id clean the TBs with some cleaner and rag.
Thats a problem on my Chevy. If i reset or reprogram the ECU and the TB is dirty it won’t idle. It has to relearn the idle position. Could be an issue

Good point Highwayman.

i wonder if it’s actually ok to clean those things
Oh yeah. Part of my regular services mc's and autos I have. Did it all the time as a tech when driveability complaints of decel stalls would come in no codes. Majority of the times theyd be fixed. Others the IAC needed replacement, but Id never replace a IAC without a TB cleaning. So no loss there.

When I had the throttle bodies off for the valve clearance check at ~58K, I was impressed how clean they, the intake tracts and intake valves looked. Probably helps that I put a lot of miles on the bike (70K) so it gets lots of fresh fuel.
