Wonder of wonders, there's a S10 at my local dealer.
Can't ride it as it's not a demo but I'm going to look at it and swing my leg over it.

(Why is it I can go to a Triumph or BMW dealer and ride anything they have but Yamaha has this bizarre 'no demo ride except on demo day' policy?)

If you are ready to buy, tell the dealership that you will not buy without a test ride. Having said that, they probably will let you ride it for 5 or 10 miles if you want. Some will do so on the condition of you write up the deal, and then test ride for the 5-10 miles. If you bring the bike back and tell them you did not like it, they rip up the deal.

My local dealer let me ride my ST before buying, he just asked that I not take it too far if, while riding, I decided I didnt want to buy it. I know this same dealer let my two buddies take a brand new FZ10 on a test ride even though both of them had no intention of buying it. That being said there is another Yamaha dealer near me that wouldnt even start up a Vstar so I could hear the exhaust note. I think the decision to allow demo rides is more of a dealer thing than a yamaha thing and might be influenced by insurance. I think BMW requires their dealers to allow demo rides of just about anything on the lot.

Has to be an individual dealer choice thing. My dealer MADE my son take an FZ-10 to lunch while he was getting a tire changed.

it's all dealer dependent. A local Calgary dealer, told me that they need a deposit on a new Africa Twin, prior to riding one of their two demos.
I asked him what happens if I don't like the bike? He told me I would love the bike. Uh huh. Ok then. At no point am I going to give a dealer $1000 for a deposit, I may or may not get.
I ended up riding a friends AT, for 50-75K on gravel, and it was ok.
I rode a 1090R at a Red Deer dealer, no issues no fuss. I was accompanied by the owner, but it was a decent test ride.

Save some money and buy mine. I'll even let you test drive it ::025::

So strange. I asked the sales guy flat out "How can you expect me to lay down $18K on a bike I've never ridden?"

His response was: "We'll let you take it around the block once the deal is written"

He told me that Yamaha owns the bikes. A Yamaha rep comes around to check the mileage on the new bikes and if a bike gets more than a small amount of mileage then the dealer has to buy it.

I'm good friends with a Triumph dealer and those bikes are on a quasi consignment arrangement. He buys them on credit from Triumph and can do with them as he wants.

All that said, I sat on it (a 2017 ES with bags). It felt good, very surprised at how light it was to pick up from the sidestand. He fired it up for me, sounded awesome.

While I was there I also sat on a 2011 V-Strom 1000. Also very comfortable. Sounded great!

I actually rode my 10 to the Triumph dealer and rode theirs. I had ridden both before and liked both of them. In 500 yards I knew the S10 was the one.

One of the things was the shape of the gas tanks. Note my name. The tenere was fine but the tiger's tank met mine shall we say.

Have not looked back. Happy with what I have and the friends I met here.

Rode it tonight chasing balloons.
