Recommendations for a tank bag?

Also...
My KTM has a BMW outlet to power my electric liner/accessories (cell phone charger). Anyone put something like this on a Tenere and have an opinion/suggestion?

Thanks,

Lewis

I really like the Yamaha one designed for the S10. Perhaps the best-designed tank bag I've used. And it fits the bike.

Lots of threads discuss adding electrical outlets. (I'd search for "Powerlet".) The one on the dash is only fused for 3A and is cig lighter rather than Powerlet/BMW. I think a couple of folks have converted it to a Powerlet plug, but I left it alone and added the 3CS from Easter Beaver below the right sidecover; they have a plug-and-play kit for the S10 which uses the aux light connector to power the relay for switched power. Then used one of these circuits for a Powerlet socket just under my right knee using a standard socket and bracket.

Lots of ways to skin this cat.

I like my SW Motech 'City' bag with their gas cap ring mount. I'm using the electric version, but am not 100% sold on that for power as it cuts out the GPS too often. Second ring, Twisted Throttle was great about sending me a replacement when one of the little pins got damaged.

On the power port, (Google Powerlet), I just installed a un-switched port up front. I use it with a 10 amp fuse, off a PC-8 fuse block for the air compressor, charging the bike with the maintenance charger, etc.

I like my Bags Connection - there is a new model with some improvement over this one, and you can get an electrified version too (although I've heard there can be some gotchas with this one if you're not careful)

Got one on my Tenere, nicely made bits of kit.

I also had the powered version on my ZZR1400 as that had no power socket and I never had any issues with it, it had two power connectors, a DIN one (Like BMW) and a Car Lighter one. With the Tenere I just use the one on the dash and run a cable into the tank bag.

We're testing the Cortech (Tourmaster) tank bag line now. About 60 days into a 90 day cycle of daily use and have had zero complaints. They have magnetic or strap options, removable map pocket, cable pass-through, glove friendly zippers, and come in colors (if you're so inclined). The magnetic version hasn't left any marks on the 'Strom's silver paint in 60 days, we'll see how the Tenere's black holds up for the next 30...

Yesterday's rare storms allowed me the "luxury" of testing the water repellency of the fabric without the rain cover in place (left at home). I was quite happy with the results, zero dampness inside the bag, even riding in a real turd floater (heavy rain for ya'll not fortunate enough to live in Texas). ;)

All that said, we've been told the next shipments out will be in August and a "hush hush" new design. We'll see how that plays out. Still, if I was bag shopping, I'd sure give 'em a look...

Haven't tested the Bags Connection stuff yet, but I used a Marsee Corona (similar ring mount on gas tank) on my old R1100S and loved the mount idea. Might just need to test one of theirs next... :-\

I'll be watching to see your report on how the black paint fairs ... and the constant feedback to bag manufacturers should always include the phrase "waterproof it from the start - rain covers are f'ing stupid". I don't care what excuse they offer for sticking with those things - the damn bags should be waterproof.

MotoAdv - are you guys testing the "Cortech Super 2.0 18-Liter Magnet / Strap Mounted Tank Bag"? Is the hush hush about the new one with 12 liter capacity? Please share update. Thanks!

PS. Also share ease/difficulty in gasing up; in strap mount mode; do you need to take bag off (un-buckle front two clips) or there is big enough opening in front to pop the gas cap open to gas up.

Another vote for the city tank bag. I love that it clips on and off to the tank ring and is plenty big enough for me. Although if you are a heavy packer you will want something with more space and better external pockets.

If you have bar backs, at least with my ROX set up, the Yamaha S10 bag sits too close to the front of the tank. The bars made contact with the bag. In most cases, I don't think it would hinder turning as the bag would probably give a bit but I just didn't like the idea of the bag hitting the bars. I was disappointed as the Yamaha S10 bag is well made, fits the sloping tank and looks good on the bike. I sent it back.

What size bar backs do you have? I have the SW Motech risers, I think they are 1 inch, and don't have a problem with the bars interfering with my Yamaha S10 bag.

Thanks.

Fredz43 - what is the installed height of the bag closest to the bars/front? And is the front - to - back position adjustable for this Yamaha tank bag?
Thanks,
Nick

I just now measured right at 5 inches at the front. The shape tapers back a bit before its widest point. It is not adjustable front to back due to the metal clip that hooks over the front of the tank. Some of my pics can be seen here in this thread:

http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=5118.msg91022#msg91022

While I was at it, I checked to see that my bars do not touch the sides of the bag at full lock. It is close, but does not touch. Here are the SW Motech risers that I have. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/5702

I also checked a stock S10 with this bag at my dealers' today and the stock bars have even more clearance between the bar and the bag. Probably if you had something like the Rox pivoting risers, the bars would touch.

Regarding the ROX bar backs/risers. I do not know what model they are other than ROX brand and they are the pivoting style. The prior owner had them installed. The position of the bars might also contribute to the rubbing and it might be that it was my GPS as mounted contributed to hitting the bag.

I recently got a Bags Connection Enduro from the local BMW shop. Cost $125. It uses a strap on base with the main bag attached with a zipper. Teh base has a cutout for the gas cap. Unzip 3/4 of the way and tilt it sidways to acces the gas cap. Three outside pockets, map pocket, expansion up top. The width of the bag is as exact match to the ridge in the middle of the Tenere's gas tank. I'm really liking it.

I just picked up the factory Yamaha tank bag yesterday. I think it is a really nicely designed bag and fits,,, well,,, like it was made for it. I have the Rox 1" up, 1" back risers and have no interference from the bar.

I'm thinking of having my local upholstery guy, who is always up for a challenge, make a couple of zippered "side pods" for it that will attach with 1/4 turn fasteners like a convertible's top (think older British sports car)so I can add 'em or remove 'em as needed.
