I know this subject has been mentioned before but here it goes again. I am looking for a tank bag to go on my Tenere. I was hoping to find one that is waterproof and has a large area for map reading as we will be doing a tour of Alaska and northern Canada in July. Is there a OEM product that will mount onto the fuel tank cap as I am worried that the magnetic ones will scratch the paint on the tank. I would appeciate any feedback.

Hey Jeffrey, if you are worried about scratching your tank, look at the Bag Connection tank bag system made by SW Motech:

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/shop-by-bike/yamaha/xt1200z-super-tenere-11?tank_bag_type=Quick-release

Twisted throttle and many other suppliers sell it. It clamps on a raised plastic ring so the bag is hanging about 3/4 inch above the tank. Most tank bags out there are NOT fully waterproof but the Bag Connextion comes with a water proof cover that you can put over the bag if needed during a heavy rain fall. Other wise stuff stays pretty much dry in light rain. You can always also use a large Ziploc bag inside to seal all your goodies.
The last picture with the dirty bike is from my last Alaska trip. I have both the TRIP and CITY Bags Connection bags and use the little one for going to work and the City model on long trips. The CITY model is discontinued but still available from many suppliers (shown on Twisted web site). The new `GS` tank bag fits the Tenere I believe. Both of my bags have the female clamps mounted at the bottom and both fit the tank ring that is installed on my gas tank. If going that brand, make sure to order the correct female bracket that goes under the bag. I also suggest you get the optional map holder.
good luck

::026:: on what Jack said, the SW motech stuff is great.
I have the tank ring adapter, with an enourmous 25L tank bag, I belive it's the GS model.
you would have to buy a map pocket that clips onto the tank bag.
No touching, no rubbing, great set up.

I have some of that clear vinyl tank wraps that you can get from various places. Tankslappers is one of them......
They also make the 3M stuff that REALLY sticks. The stuff I have is simply "cling" and it does an excellent job of protecting the tank.

A couple of local places will also do that kind of work - but check references.

I've had several Touratech tankbags on my BMWs. Thinking about using one on the Tenere. Well made, roomy with a big map pocket, and doesn't scratch paint.

Bags Connect City Tank bag with map pouch. I love it, but it is a smaller tank bag. If you like to take the kitchen sink with you they make a bigger one. I think its called the GS tank bag.

Once again, I'll show you all my simple inexpensive way to protect your tank from getting scratched by any tankbag. I got a lifetime supply of this stuff at Wally World for under $5. Cut out a piece in the shape of the bottom of your tank bag, place it on the tank when you are going to put your tankbag on and you are set. Not only does it protect the paint, the non slip material keeps the bag from moving around. If it eventually wears out, just cut another piece from the roll. I presently use that stuff on my Yamaha tankbag, but have used it on many others on other bikes.

Looks like a rubber shelf liner.

I use clear plastic shelf liner as a buffer for luggage scratches - bought a roll for $7.99 at Target a decade ago and still have most of it left.

However, I've had pretty good luck with the Yamaha tank bag not scratching even if I use nothing. No experience with other brands on the S10, but the Yamaha OEM one is custom-fitted for the bike, spacious, and has lots of features. One of the better OEM ones I've seen over the years.

I agree with Mark about the quality of the Yamaha bag. I sold my Wolfman once I saw how good it is.

I got the black rubberized shelf liner in the kitchen department at Wal Mart.

Read one comment that the Yamaha OEM tank bag moved around too much when riding on dirt/gravel so they switched to a different tank bag. Anyone else experience this?

I have never experienced that with my Yamaha tang bag. But I do place my non slip paint protective pad (shelf liner) under it when I use it.

This bag came to my attention after reading as many ride journals as I could find prior to the S10 coming to the states. Famsa is an Italian made product and commensurately found primarily in Europe... At least that's what I've found. Although the various features were similar to the two Rainier bags I'd come to count on over the years, I favored the Famsa for it's heavier gauge materials, superior rigidity, and considerate mounting.

Not unlike the Rainier, it has three external zipped compartments. Two generous pockets on the flanks and one (with mesh outer pocket) on the rear. It does lack the removable forward pocket found on the Rainier. That was/is obviously not a problem for me. The top cover has a clear, zippered, semi-waterproof map compartment. The inside of the top has a mesh pocket. The bag also expands upward for increased capacity. I call that souvenir headspace.
The graphics and trim are evident, though not overly so... Except for night which I prefer.

The mounting system is unique and positive. It consists of a pad-like tank cover that is 3-point mounted via nylon web straps. It stays put quite well with the bag stuffed full and also has a non marring surface on the tank side. It also extends far down near the seat offering greater tank finish protection.

The actual mounting mechanism is a zipper that runs the circumference of the bag, making a positive mating with the tank mount. I've had no issues with this system and find fueling much simpler and quicker... Very helpful in inclement weather, not to mention less aggravating. Another bonus is that for around the town riding without the bag I still get the tank protection of the mount. The mount is designed around the filler fixture further adding to fueling simplicity.

I believe both bags are great products and both have served very well. For me the Famsa is a better pairing on the S10.

Magnetic bags scratch the tank badly. Whenever the bag is removed to refuel or park, tiny grains of magnetic ore are mashed into and dragged along the paint with a lot of force.

I'm a great fan of the baglux system. having used it on my TDM900 I considered it a "no brainer" when deciding on which tank bag to fit to my S10.

I was also considering the baglux cover with the Cross'r tank bag. Which tank bag are you using?

I have a brand new FirstGear magnetic bag I am selling.

It's pretty big, has velcro pockets so that the GPS sits in a small window at the top

and can also be powered.

I had this very model on my bike for the 1st year and then it had a zipper failure and I received a new replacement.

I went with a Yamaha Tenere bag in the time it took to get the other one sent to me and I wired it for power...

I just never got around to re-wiring the FirstGear again and in the mailing box it sits.

So if you want a very hip magnetic (*it also has suction cups with the kit and tie straps too*) get with me.

Here's a pic of it.
