So, I am hard shopping for a Super Ten, leaning toward a left over 2014 base because I want cruze control and the upgrades, but a mechanical cruze control will work and really is not that big of a deal. So, what about the differences between the models, the updates? So, a local shop has a 2014 ES for $13,600, plus tax $14,400! That is alot of money to me and I just can't pull the trigger on that bike. Then I see this bike on Craigs List. Tell me why I should not buy it?

14's have a different clutch basket, a lot less vibes through the bars, depending on each particular bike, different cam chain tensioner as well. There have been tensioner failures on a few bikes at higher mileages. The 14's have a few more pony's in the engine too. Aftermarket heated grips and throttle lock are cheap to add. the 2012 bike is a toss up, not a great deal, but not a terrible one either. Take it for a spin, you'll know if you want it then. The 2012 should have a trunk, I'm not certain you could buy the Yammy luggage seperately. Good luck

14400 usd seems steep.
They are selling 2014 ES models in Canada for $15000 OTD.

save some coin and go for the used option.
A clutch basket will set you back $250 plus 1.5 hrs of labor (or do it yourself, easy enough)
Install a 2014 cct if you're worried, or go to a manual one. Again another $150 there.

If you're really picky, flash the ecu for quicker response $200 from Anthony from the forum.

I've done all of the above to my early delivery 2011, and would not trade up to the new 2014.

That said, you do know what they say about opinions... ::025::

I say go with a left-over 2014..there are too many upgrades that make a big difference to pass it up on a 2012 that is almost $10K!!

PS. I looked the bikes value up on KBB and he wants the full retail value! Retail value is never paid on a private sale. The Trade-in value is $6810, so the private party sale is somewhere in the middle of these two numbers. I would say if you can get it for around $9000 then go for it!

Maybe the sells was thinking with the extra's it would go for his asking price but you never get back the money you put in for the extra's!!!

The Z and the ZE may look the same, but they are totaly difrient, after a test drive over some passes, gravel and tar I traded my Z without any questions,

Today, 12 000 km further I still think it was the best thing to do, I also had a mechanical cruise control on my Z but it isnt the same as the electronic CT as on the ZE.

Over December I did nearly 5000 km from wich the 1st day was a 1 200 km fully loaded with pillion and the CT on the ZE made it a breeze.

At the end of the day, you've got to do what you feel comfortable doing financially, don't get into debt unnecessarily, it's only a bike.
Good luck with whatever you do.

To aid in your calculation.... here are some things to consider. You make no mention of the 2014 having panniers. That's about $800 give or take. The upgraded clutch basket is around $260. A tune , pc , and pipe is roughly about $700. So for around $1000, you will be quicker with better response and as smooth as a babies bottom. The 2012 also has a crash bar ($400) and gel seats (mmm) .After you offer $8500 and settle at $9000, your total is still aroun $4000 cheaper than the 2014 and with panniers, clutch, tune ,pc and muffler. It's a no brainier.

no need to blow $700 on tuning. A good ecu flash for $200 will do wonders. Then again, I rode around with a clutch switch mod for 3 years, and it still kicked ass.
You can also buy givi crash bars for less than $200.
The used bike makes sense.

Spend any time on the 2014 and it'll be a no brainer. They are not the same bike. I've had both. Still have the 14 of course. Both great bikes. Just one is greater than the other. You'll never turn a 2012 into a 2014.

I need to correct you RC..you had a stock 2012 with a pipe, and protection. OEM basket, cct, and ecu.

I don't know....for me to trade my current 2011, I might get 9 grand for it. Basket done, cct done, ecu flash done, suspension done, cruise control? I have the 12 dollar jobbie that works for what I need it.
Then I have to spend an additional $5 grand. The good news would be that the bulk of the addons that I would want to carry over would fit, except my staintune pipe.
Instead, I spent the money on a new FZ07 ::015::

I try to stay out of these threads. But I can't stop myself sometimes.

The agonizing and gnashing of teeth over the + or - of the last few $'s on acquiring a Tenere.............

Stand back for a few seconds. And then ask yourself, "can I really actually get ripped off on buying a Tenere?"

Or put it another way.......Is a Super Tenere worth what they cost?
I have always argued that in the big picture, a Super Tenere is actually WORTH every single dollar of MSRP!
At MSRP, it is still an incredible value. After all, it is actually riding it and experiencing it AS A MOTORCYCLE that determines it's value to us.

Ask yourself when you are on say.....mile 32,642 as you cross over the Bitteroot mountains if the last few hundred, or even a couple of thousand, were worth it?!!! :)
I argue that you won't even be considering it! In fact, there are more and more fellas taking the "hit" on resale and getting their second Tenere. No way can that be an "economically" sound transaction.
But it proves the point I'm making. (I hope) The Super Tenere is WORTH IT to them.

Go find a Tenere that calls to your passion to ride. And buy it!
The fact that almost nobody is required to pay MSRP is just a gift.

You AREN'T paying too much.
I've never seen an overpriced Tenere.

well said.

What I would like to add, is that they wear like anvils. which is to say that they don't.

Another reason to keep mine, as I only crested over 51 km/30k miles
After a thorough going through on my buddy's barely maintained ST with 60 thou km, it was faultless. Minimal wear, and bits that fell off.

Well to answer your request to talk you out of the bike is:

Only one thing wrong with this bike is the resale value. I feel that many have dumped the bike finding out it wasn't for them and sold at a very low cost to walk away. I know 2 who are very well off and bought the bike not understanding purpose or type of bike. they simply bought it cause it looked cool to them. They both dumped it for 9k and that was in 2013. So with others i have read reason of sale i feel this could be part of the horrible resale phenomenon. MPO.
I paid 13.5 out the door for my 2012 and have put another 3k or more into it and would be lucky to get 8k now with all farkles.
11k miles
CCT
Ecu Flash
Etc....

Soo with that said I feel it is the greatest all around 1k cc plus, long distance adventure bike out there. I have same issues with BMW or KTM that everyone already have discussed love them both but no thank you. Worst thing while riding long distance is worrying hoping mechanically you will make it. No worries with the Tenere---knock on wood--

Snake I agree with you!! I will be the one to get a second Tenere! Like the ES 14 but not worth $ loss to move to 2014. My bike right now is better then the 2014 except for suspension only. So waiting for I guess 2018 tenere.. or 900 version...But will keep my 12 for rest of my life! Its just that damn good in all areas. The KTM Spikes in areas and fails in many. BMW the same. But Tenere is a leveled plain for me.

and for some weird unknown reason to me it loves the cold ass temps I am riding here in Utah the last couple of weeks at night so windchill and temp equaling about 5-15 degrees.. This bike loves the cold! to me it runs wonderful in the cold and in the high heat it is different not bad but sensitive to me. Still rocks the daily ride just fine in 90+ degrees but it sure is noticeably different Cold VS High heat.
