Alps for 4 weeks - Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Switzerland. Awesome trip, my best thus far.

It's so nice riding a bike you're intimate with. My black 2012 here is setup slightly different than my white 2013 at home but that is a quick 1 minute adjustment after mounting. Lack of familarity with a rental bike and unknown reliability would greatly distract from enjoying a long ride for me.

The trip we did to the Alps was amazing....the Dolomite's are unbelievable.

Question for the Carpuride owners. I've definitely decided to buy one, now only one last decision.

Any regrets on the 7" size of the 702? Seems almost too large for me. I'm torn thinking I would be happier with the 5" 502 model. Cost difference between the two is next to nothing. My vision is not an issue as I must ride with corrective bifocal lenses already. My concern is only about the unit's size and handlebar space used up.

Dolomite's were the highight for me as well, beyond description awesome. Spent one week there but with my homebase nearby in Austria. Next trip I will homebase in a small village in the heart of the Dolomite's and stay longer.

I used to regularly get to rent bikes in Europe and the various areas are like different flavors. Dolomites were fantastic but come up the spine of Italy and stopping in the little outdoor cafes you can’t help but bond with the locals. Same in Greece. You will never be treated like a local in Basque Spain where the roads are beautiful and totally different than Picos de Europa which is just a couple hours west, or riding the Tour de France bicycle Cols of the Pyrenees a couple hours East. Switzerland is beautiful but a pain in the ass with all the speed cameras and zero tolerance enforcement.

Just getting going on the navigation setup.

Tablet: Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2, after reading the "Best tablet for navigation" thread over on ADVRider. I copied the setup PitLaneRider has.

Software: Osmand+
The maps aren't as clean as Gaia, but they are still very good. Only thing stopping me from getting Gaia is the yearly buy in.
Adding waypoints and tracks work great, and can be transferred over from Gaia as well.
I plan on setting my maps up there and exporting them over to Osmand+.
The only bug I've found on Osmand+ is setting up a route, and having it "snap" to the roads.
(OldSkoolVFX on reddit pointed out- once you click all your points, click on the route between points button on the lower left (0-0), then click whole track, then your profile, and itll change your points to follow the roads!)

Mount: Akron tablet mount (TAB127).
Seems to like itll work just fine. The backplate on the holder doesn't lock into place like it really should.
(The Tab127 handlebar mount is a 17mm ball, which has a smaller plate than the tablet mount is made for. To get the bigger plate that locks, you need a 22mm ball which doesn't exist).
(Update: I just found a mount from iBolt, that has a 22mm ball)

I added a few extra holes, some jb-weld and a cotter pin to the 17mm plate so its stable and locking and removable.

Case: Targus
Screen Protector : Illumishield Matte
Cable: CAFELE Magnetic Type-c Cable

I was hoping to find an app that would background record video, but none seem to be able to save to sd card. Oh well.

If I was looking to replace my Zumo XT with something better, I would seriously be looking at that DMD2 setup.....
That seems like an awesome Dash/Navigation solution............and if you have a sim card in there with a data-plan, app upgrades and adding map info on the go would be sweet!

Hi,
I wanted to share my experiences with motorcycle navigation via tablet.
Perhaps my solution can inspire one or two people.
I have never owned a real navigation device. In the RD250 days I drove with a map. With the TRX I then navigated with the smartphone and Google maps. This proved to be a success and was initially used on the S10 until my charging socket on the smartphone broke. At the same time, my girlfriend, who rides in the back, said that the smartphone was too small for her because she also wanted to see more from behind in case I missed something. So I did a lot of research and looked at solutions. The most elegant solution seems to be the carpe iter pad. But it is also the most expensive solution. The problem with all devices is of course the waterproofness and the charging option. Based on my previous experience, charging with USB is out of the question. Also, charging with USB is not waterproof. Many devices such as the Active Tab or the carpe iter charge with pogo pins. Here too, I have read in various German forums that there are supposed to be problems in the rain and the pins wear out and then no longer have a proper connection. So the only option for me is inductive charging. Unfortunately, there is currently no 8" outdoor tablet that has inductive charging.
I have decided to go for an Ulefone Armor Pad 8 for now. I don't charge it on the bike at all. When the battery is full and the display is at the brightest level, the battery lasts about 9-10 hours with Google maps. That's enough for me.
I chose the Holder 2.0 (holder4bikers.eu) as a mount. A very solid piece of equipment.
As a little gimmick, I attached the carpe iter Bluetooth adventure controller to the handlebars so that I could scroll on the map without taking my hands off the handlebars. I am very happy with the setup and can only recommend it. If an 8" tablet with inductive charging comes out at some point, I can simply retrofit it. So now I have all the options. I don't have any good pictures of it at the moment, but I can share them if needed.
Lots of words, but I hope it helps with the decision.
Best regards, Jannik

I had lust.

Paid for the dmd2 sub and used it on my phone, as there's been a few decent hardware options in the past, but I've never really liked the software choices.

I primarily use my gps as a moving map, and have learned what works for me. I'm an old map and compass guy, been using gps for work since the early 90's, on a bike since 2002. My 2 big things are: is it easy to figure out if a road goes thru, and is it a good heads up display for those 'oh shit' corners.

The dmd2 software doesn't give me the readable detail when zoomed out like my 276cx. Zoomed in it's okay.

Evidently you can add other apps that are more specific to exactly what you might be looking for.

(I’m also still learning)

I've tried maybe 12 different ones by now, I guess. Latest one I'm road testing is Guru. Jury is out on that one still. Not screaming "THIS ONE" yet, though.

Osmand+ is functional. I use it for RTExUSA locations primarily.

Waze for traffic, closures, and cops works okay. For A to B nav, I use it most.

Sygic works good on an android head unit in the old truck. Takes forever to download maps.

There's been a bunch more over the years. No keepers.

My current set up is a 276cx on the windshield crossbar for the big picture (not a good route planner as it's built to be a marine chartplotter), Zumo XT for the heads up zoom display and actual offline nav (derived from their soccer mom Drive lineup, it'll get you there if you're just a take-me-there type), and my S23 android phone (tunes, waze, bt tpms monitor, garage door remote, weather/radar display).

It's what works for me.

I came across an ADV video with someone who mounted a Garmin Tread XL..... Has anyone used this or know someone who has ? I understand you can down load the DMD2 software behind the Garmin software. Also this has In-reach built I with full satellite connectivity. Thoughts?
This is to be used way 'off grid' with zero cell service.

DMD2 can be loaded on a Garmin? I don’t know anything about the Tread XL, so if that’s possible it’s pretty cool. I have a ZumoXT sitting in the box that I bought on that crazy sale from Kohls ($150). Not sure what I’ll do with it but at that price it was too good to pass up.

Wow that’s a crazy low price ! Was it brand new ? Or maybe a returned unit ?
I actually have 2 Zumo XT’s, was wanting to buy an extra mount for the first one so I could use it on 2 different bikes but the price for the extra mount was so high I decided to just buy another complete Zumo XT.

Yeah there was an insane sale going on through Kohls from Thanksgiving till nearly Xmas. Brand new ZumoXT for $150. Honestly I didn’t think it would actually arrive but sure enough it did. A couple of my friends also got one at this price. I also got something silly like $45 in Kohls cash from the purchase which I gave to my wife :)

This is my second ZumoXT. I sold my first one and preferred using my cellphone but when in direct sunlight on a hot summer day my iPhone will get too hot and dim the screen to the point where its unless. My plan was to mount the ZumoXT to my 690, but I’m still thinking about selling that once the weather gets better.

Evidently garmin are using Android based stuff for these more advanced race units. You can download load apps to this Tread XL. I do not think you can do it with any other garmin.

I like the idea of DMD2 along with the crazy detail you can get with this tread along with in reach built in. I’m thinking deep woods solo rides. This is the direction I’m finding I need to go. No one wants to go ride ?

Not sure...... I could see it being used as specific tool for someone. I think of safety like boots, helmet, GPS like the story of a friend that needed a $50K helicopter ride because he 'cheaped' out on the correct gear. (personal experience and opinion for sure)
Im personally not buying this equipment, but it's always nice to know what is out in the world.

I believe the large screen T865X with bar controller is about $1200-$1300 with no satellite communication.... (for comparison) These few devices are on a whole different planet over a typical everyday Tom-Tom, if someone is looking for this type of equipment. For me this is educational and just jaw-jabbing...
