Interesting, it's pretty vague tho, i take it since it fails to mention a vin range or year specific that all versions are affected (as far as i know the only difference is color anyway, so makes sense)

I wonder if this recall will makes it way to the US. I know several here have had the harness replaced under warranty, but if your not having the problem, would they still do it.
I mentioned it to my dealer last year when i was having new tires mounted. one of my lights were out just before that.( I moved the connections around the lights have been fine since with no noticeable melting). He looked into an updated part number at the time and there's was none.
I guess I can call him up and show him the recall notice for au.
I have Y.E.S so it shouldnt be too hard to convince them.

Might as well recall the useless plastic gear rack as well!

Could be dangerous to other traffic if whatever is attached to the rack fall of due to a weak rack :-(
They did years ago. It is supposed to have a metal piece inserted or moulded in there now. If it hasn't go and get it done. The silver cover is just a dress piece or a very light duty extension for when you "flat tray" the back.

Stock gear rack cracked, got an AltRider now which is very sturdy :) a great rack that I can easily attach and stack my RotoPax fuel cells (the rack is already prepared with holes for the RotoPax attachment) or my heavy loaded Givi trunk.

I called my dealer about this. They're aware of wiring issue, but they won't do anything unless it's broken and they said there's no updated part number. Ya right. I told them about the au recall as well. They don't know of a pending US recall of any kind. Since mine really hasn't been a problem yet and I have 2 years left on my extended warranty, I'll hold off and see what happens.

Yamaha replaced my harness before it failed after I called Custer support and expressed my concern about my safety should the harness fail either day or night. We also discussed liability... ::025::

They offered to have my local dealer inspect the harness at no charge to me, resistance was found to be out of spec and harness was replaced.

There will not be a recall in the USA unless owners report there harness failures to the NHTSA, it is they who initiate recalls, not the manufacture.

There was a thread on this a few months ago and the general sentiment seemed to be that it wasn't worth reporting as it's such a great bike, Yamaha were taking care if it under warranty in case of failure, a replacement harness is relatively inexpensive, and folks didn't really seem to think a recall was warranted.

I would generally agree, except I think this is a safety issue that should be addressed on the bikes that got the obviously weak harness. I've had mine replaced under YES once, before the updated harness was released, so I won't be surprised if it happens again.

I reported mine on the NHTSA site, and in this instance believe Yamaha should replace all affected harnesses. It would seem they over-engineered everything on this bike with the exception of the original light harness.

The place for US owners to file problem reports is

www.SAFERCAR.GOV

On the FJR, there was a recall related to ignition switches. NHTSA doesn't approve of engines dying in the middle of fast traffic on the freeway it turns out. But we on the FJRForum had to get people to go to SAFERCAR.GOV and file their problems.

I'm not sure how they will look at the loss of a headlight.

Obviously, you would not be mentioning this if you had ever loaded the rack with more than the max weight of 10 kg or whatever it is, right?

My thinking is since the headlights must be on, that the sudden loss of one (or both) even during daylight hours could be considered a potential safety issue. Not trying to blow it out of proportion, but the lights are there for a reason and it's not decoration...

It appears that USA bikes are going to be recalled to replace the headlight wiring harness...

Report Receipt Date: FEB 10, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V044000
Component(s):
All Products Associated with this Recall expand
Details close
7 Associated Documents expand
Manufacturer: Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA
SUMMARY:
Yamaha Motor Corporation USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2009-2013 YZFR1 motorcycles manufactured October 2008 through August 2013 and 2012-2013 XTZ12 motorcycles manufactured October 2011 through August 2013. In the affected motorcycles, use of the headlight may generate enough heat to cause the bulb connections to expand, resulting in arcing in the headlight bulb socket which could cause the socket to overheat, melt and cause the headlight to malfunction.
CONSEQUENCE:
A headlight failure reduces the rider's ability to see clearly and the motorcycle's visibility to oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Yamaha will notify owners and dealers will replace the headlight socket, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2014. Owners may contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

It might have taken longer than it should have. But this is just one more reason for me to feel good about my decision to buy this bike a few years ago. I feel like it was incredibly well engineered. Built by a company with obvious dedication to quality control. And finally, a company that really does stand behind it's product.
And for me personally, a group of folks at a dealership that genuinely takes an interest in me being a satisfied customer.

Couldn't really ask for more. Very pleased.

Got to agree with you about Yamaha here, Snake, as there are only two NHTSA reports of the headlamp issue on the Tenere and zero on the R1. It would appear that Yamaha are taking the bull by the horns and replacing with the upgraded harness. The timeframe is about right considering the updated harness became available a few weeks (two months maybe?) ago.

Kudos to Yamaha for standing by it's product!

This is my first Yamaha motorcycle (have had two sets of their drums), but I gotta tell ya, I'm quickly becoming a fan of the Motorsport division...

What, like this you mean ?

127 UK bikes recalled in 2010 to have the black plastic support bit beefed up. The new bit was about 3 times as strong as the original. I still have both. (somewhere !)

I emailed my dealer with the OP's link who bounced it to Yamaha Oz. This is yesterday's reply:

"There will be a recall on Certain XT1200's to be announced within the next week. As soon as the Info is available we will advise the Network and contact Customers."

This is the reply I received from Yamaha Australia:

We shall be notifying owners of affected units on the 28th February, regarding the headlight sub-lead exchange/recall.
