I was in a similar position as the OP. Chose 2nd gen, non ES for price and simplicity. I have a bike with ES and several without. To me it's not something I want to spend extra to have. But I've spent time understanding how my suspension works and can adjust it as I need it without issue.

Honestly, I was going to buy new until I took a serious look around and found some very low mileage bikes that were barely more than half the price of new. I couldn't pass that sort of deal up and now I'll spend what I saved on fun stuff for the bike.

+1. I tend to have my suspension serviced and re oiled every 15 - 20k and I assumed that this would be more difficult on an ES model.

I recently had my 1190S suspension serviced and other than disconnecting the electrical connectors it wasn't a big deal. My suspension guy didn't say it was any more difficult. Just FYI in case the OP is leaning toward an ES.

FWIW, All Gen II bikes have CC. Factory Heated grips cost about $200 to ad if you just order the separate parts, which are cheaper than the OEM kit.

Anyone recall what year the cut off is for checking your own codes? IIRC, '16 was the first year you couldn't do that, but I have a '15, so wasn't really paying attention to that tid bit.
I have a '16 (non ES) and can check codes on the instrument cluster.

I owned a Gen I for 5 years and now have a Gen II ES. The latter is a much more refined bike, the cruise is priceless and if you're carrying a passenger you'll really appreciate the ES.

@twinrider thanks. I have definitely narrowed it down to a Gen II with the ES for reasons you state above. Now I am just waiting for one that sparks my attention and is priced competitively. Thanks for the info!

Have you also serviced the forks? Was this more difficult on a ES?

Hi Matt

I had my front forks serviced by a local, highly rated independent mechanic at 36k last May

He was a bit reluctant to take the job on at first because he thought that the forks would have to re-calibrated to the ECU like BMWs. I managed to source a workshop manual on disc which showed that they did not need re-calibrating.

He informed me that it was a very simple job, no more difficult than standard forks. There was no sign of any wear and the oil was still good.

Hope this helps

Mike

Good luck on your search! A HD guy too (Streetglide & Dyna)..... A S10 will be a great addition. Love mine. I ended up with a 1 st gen w/2k and oem luggage. I love it and its turned out to be the ride of choice touring. Of course on these cold rainy days for commute (cleaning the HDs are a bitch). Kinda glad with the issues of cruise control popping up here, my simple Kaoko works fine. I do my own work, so ES seemed like more complication for work I didnt want. Thats just me though. Both are great.

Ive done alot to it heated grips, madstad brackets, windcreen, bumot luggage, exhaust, kaoko cruise, etc..... My 2 cents..... Though i got a good deal on a low mileage loved S10 the farkles are expensive.... I see now ones pop up with farkles I paid for already on em for sale. The little extra on the buy for the ones with farkles is money well ahead. The 1000ish more for some I see with the farkles now would have saved me thousands. Look for em farkled. For example.... Thanks @Highwayman I found an ‘18 ES with several farkles for dirt cheap. Agreed these items add up more than I would like but makes me more giddy receiving these in the mail than Christmas and birthday gifts combined. Living in Ohio is not fun for bikers in the winter and only get about 35+ miles and then lose feeling in my limbs. I can’t wait to get out and go places my Harley could not on the Super Tenere.

Yeah, I was really surprised farkles for this stuff are $$ like HD stuff. Guess they know ADV giys have $$ too. I at least got lucky the guy had put bars, skid and lights on already.

LOL, told my self I wasnt gonna dump alot $$ into it. Here I am thousands into it..... Oh well.... How I am with my bikes.

Haha, I hear ya loud and clear. However it is fun right? I keep telling the wife not to buy more shoes and other stuff and she just gives me that look. I then shut up pretty soon after! And she has no idea the cost of farkling this thing either. But when riding, one can’t wipe that grin off my face. So, all is good.

I am rather new to the Tenere but owned motorcycle my whole life. I really don't think there are bad years but maybe some improvements starting at '14 going up. So why did I buy a '13??? You can get an almost new Gen 1 crazy cheap if you take the time to look. My '13 had only a little over 2100 miles! The biggest thing is to replace the CCT and maybe the clutch pack down the road. Both of those can me done cheap if you have some skill. I have replaced the CCT, added McCruise cruise control, wind shield, and LED lights and thousands less than a newer bike. With the knowledge on this site for reference, a first gen is fine.

Very tru about the fire sale prices on Gen 1 bikes, but there are some steals on 2014 Gen2s out there now as well.
