I had a '04 FJR and have a '12 Super Ten now. I've done a lot of 20 hour days on both bikes. I ran the MERA 10-n-10 rally on the FJR and the IBR on the Super Ten. Properly set up for your needs, both are comfortable bikes. Like others, I sometimes miss that turbine like smooth power of the FJR, but the S10 does the job fine, if at lower top speeds.

IMHO, the FJR has better weather protection. The S10 has more relaxed ergos. Both bikes do well in cross winds, though the S10 might have a slight edge. At the end of the day, take what ever bike meets that trip's needs or puts a bigger smile on your face.

It's always surprising to me how many folks here have owned, or still own, an FJR along with their ST. I'm guessing the demographic of the buyer for both bikes is very similar and Yamaha brand loyalty is pretty strong.

I rode my FJR's for 11 years and there's zero doubt to me that the riding position of the ST is FAR more comfortable. I've upgraded my windshield on the ST which has made the airflow very nice. Enough to keep you ventilated and not so much to beat you up. I also put Sargent seats on all three bikes which helped both my comfort and my passengers.

Only thing I REALLY miss about the FJR is its turbine like power. I LOVED twisting that throttle and holding it while the bike just kept pulling and pulling.
Are you sure you aren't cribbing from my notes? (Although I am still working on wind management nirvana, and still have my stock seats.) I owned both an 04 and 08 FJR...until the ST came around.

Holy Hell! It appears you have purchased more bikes than me! I guess buying bikes is better than drugs or hookers.
My wife doesn't protest much about bikes but I think drugs and hookers wouldn't go over too well.

I have an 05 FJR and a '12 SuperT. Just did 14 states in 10 days.Indiana to Utah, Arizona through the panhandle to NC, back to Indy. The Super T was flawless and I didn't get any speeding tickets. I have to admit the Super T has some unspeakable thing that is compelling for a long trip. When I got to US129, I rode it better on the Super T than on my FJR. Just saying, Super T is the best of all worlds because ti can do so many things. As my trip came to the last few states, I had bonded with it deeply, understanding its every sway, vibration and engine thump. Seamless. After getting home and jumping on the FJR, compared to the FJR-other than long accelerative straightaways and sweepers, the Super T is a worthy steed! I prefer the SuperT in corners than the FJR (unmodified)

I'm letting my older brother "store" (use as he wishes) my 2005 FJR.

There's only 1 thing my FJR does better than my Super Tenere: make me go "oh shit" when I wack open the throttle.

sport touring bikes as a class have wonderful engines, there is no getting around that. They also have excellent weather protection. What they don't offer tho is flexiblity and the relaxed and opened up ergos of a big dual-sport. I sold an ST1300a to pick up the ST10. I miss the electric screen and the warp-factor engine but really, I find the ST10 more comfortable for the most part and the longer the day, the more that is apparent, YMMV.

I voter with a lot of people in here.

My FJR was lots of fun and truly fast. But it is much more compact on my knees and harder to take on long rides.

My S10 isn't nearly as fast but it is all day comfortable, will exceed any speed limits, I think it is less subject to severe crosswinds and according to the people I generally ride with I am actually much faster on Twisties on the S10 than my FJR. I know I am much, much less tired after long days or long trips on the S10 than I am/was on the FJR.

And it definitely weighs less. Only drawback to me ... I maybe get 20-25 miles more range on the FJR.

i actually view the speed thing as a positive, 'less likely to get me into trouble. A couple of years ago I was just west of the Bonneville Salt Flats & needed to get around a truck in a hurry so I jumped on the trottle on my ST1300. I thought I might be going maybe 85-90.
When I looked down it turned out to be 107. Not only did it get there, right now, but 107 felt a lot like 85. I have not taken the new S10 up above the ton but my impression is it will do so but help you a bit by making you aware that it is laboring hard on your behalf. For the common-sence challeged such as myself, that is a good thing ;D

It would be interesting to see this question posed on a FJR forum. With the relative "newness" of the S10 there must be far fewer people that have gone from an S10 to the FJR. I would still like to see the responses from a pro-FJR group.

I had an 07 FJR for several years. Great bike (though I went through a LOT of vwindshields before I beat the turbulence. The FJRs power is unreal, smooth and incredibly quick. I called mine "sneaky fast" 'cause I'd be bombing along at 60 or so on the two lane, glance down and see the speedo bouncing off 95! The bike would be just loafing along, kind of a yawn and "well whadda ya want to do now " attitude. I knew that sooner or later I'd wind up with a Serious ticket on that machine... Anyway, got a new '13 ST and absolutely love it for road trips. Plenty of power, comfortable riding position, great in the twisty stuff. Anyway, my pick for your trip would be the S10, but you really can't go wrong either way... Have fun!
