Super Tenere 2015 Clattering Noise

I bought a Supra Tenere 2015 in december 31st 2015. It is the silver tank and gold forks. I have what I am calling a clatter on the right side, appears to be the lowercase area? Clutch? very annoying and does not sound normal.
I have a 2006 FJR1300 which sounds like a machine.
It is the noisiest in any gear around 3500 to 4000 rpm but still makes the clattering noise in all rpm's.
Is this clattering noise normal?

I've always thought these engines were pretty clattery but since you've had the bike more than 6 months are you saying this noise as recently developed or has it always been there?

Hard to know without hearing it but my 2016 has been rattly from new, had 2k on it now and it no quieter. just seems to be an agricultural engine, if in doubt get it to a dealer.

Yamaha's parallel twin has always been a bit rattley. My old Yamaha TDM850 parallel twin, the forerunner of the ST engine, was the same. In fact, most parallel twins I've heard run were somewhat similar, but I have not experienced Honda's Africa Twin motor.

For what it is worth my 2015ES has a bit of an industrial rattle sound at idle.

I have a 2016 ES version , the most rattley engine I have ever come across. On mine it sounds like top end noise and everyone remarks on it. Sounds like a diesel/tractor engine. A pity as otherwise it is a great bike.

Pipe would mask it....

But before we all disparage it lots of iconic engines have all sorts of less than pleasing sounds: dry clutch and primary chain rattle on air cooled Ducks, the over pronounced whir of the Triumph triples, BMW boxers have quite a few noises depending on year, cam chain noise on Honda K bikes, and so on.

Hi

Today I also noticed the clattering noise from the engine, but the loudest in my case is just below 3000 rpm.

Reading the forum and listening to few youtube posts, it seems just the normal engine noise. But out of curiosity, let me ask Tenere2015. Did you chat with a dealer about the noise? Any feedback from them?

Mine is a 2015 model with 10,800km. And red, because as someone said, red ones are the fastest.

Dealing with a noise second-hand over the internet is like asking about the sound of a color.
Sorry, but maybe you could post where you are and see if somebody else is in the area. If you are in Hayward, which is what your profile says, we have a number of owners in the Bay area and maybe you could meet up.

These engines are clattery. I used to worry about it but it seems normal. 30,000 miles later it's the same still.

I find ear plugs usually fix most of those noises. Mine have all be pretty quiet.

A lot of the clatter could be in the clutch. See if it quiets down when you pull in the lever. My WR 450 was a lot louder than the S 10 with one cylinder. I will bet that it's normal. Even my two past FJR's had a clatter in them. Injectors firing @ 50 PSI make some noise as well.

Thanks Checkwrecks, you have a good point. I have placed my phone under the fuel tank, so the noise ended up louder than it really is, but out of curiosity, here it is.

Dirt_dad - It is the start of the season for me, and I was indeed without the ear plugs since a long time. Will fix that for today's ride.

I updated my profile - I am actually in Newmarket, ON.

FWIW, thats exactly how mine sounded too. So if yours is broken, so was mine.

Yup, mine sounds the same. It would nice if Yamaha could tighten up the mechanical noise and open up the exhaust a bit.

Put a full Arrows system on it. It'll sing like it's living in Italy.
Yamaha ships you a 90% finished bike. Then invites you to choose your own finish. Tenere rallys are awesome to see all the different finishes. But all are the same Super Tenere underneath.

The worst sounding engine ever, to me, was my '04 RT-1150P with 60k miles. Sounded like an old POPPIN' JOHNNY tractor. The dealer claimed it was the ethanol's fault. I think it was the dealer's fault; which is no longer in business.

I don't mind the exhaust note on my '16. It's throaty enough for me. The mechanical clatter took some getting used to. It's exacerbated by the skid plate as well. Earplugs, helmet and a re-flashed ECU make it a moot point for me. But for sure, it's the noisiest motor I've ever had. I usually fall back on ::021::
