I would like to have feedback from anyone who rides a '14 S10 (tall windshield) and uses a Shoei Hornet helmet
I love the looks of the helmet but unfortunately I have heard so much about excessive noise levels and wind buffeting from the peak, I am inclined to get the RF1200 instead. I would like to hear it from some genuine Tenere riders so that I could make an informed decision.
Thanks in advance.
Btw, I ride mostly (90%) on the road and long distances and I can easily tuck myself behind the windshield with just the top of head exposed to the wind.....yes I am short!

I'm 6' and with the '14 stock screen in the middle position and the seat in the high position I have no issues with either the Hornet or the RF1200. The dual sport helmet is not as quiet and there is some wind pressure when I turn my head but overall I'm pleased with it. With both of the helmets I always use earplugs on long rides but I prefer that to putting a barn door on the front to block out all of the wind. Finding the right combination of windscreen vs. seat height and helmet noise is always a compromise, I just prefer the sportier screens.

I use a Hornet with a 20" madstad screen and bracket, topped off with a MRA Xscreen. No problems what so ever with buffeting now. Stock screen(14) in all positions sucked with the Hornet. I love my helmet! It's light, great field of vision, vents pretty good, and morning commutes with the sun in my eyes is not too bad, just a slight tilt of my head and fixed!

Thanks for the feedback. I totally agree with the comment about getting the right combination. It took 4 windshields and 2 helmets to finally get a right noise free ride on my GS. Hope I wouldn't have to go through the process all over again. I currently use a Nolan N86 and it's totally quiet. Strangely, I had to wear ear plugs when I used the same helmet with the RT despite its renowned wind protection, but I never have to wear earplugs with the Tenere!! Unfortunately the Nolan has seen its days and I need a quiet helmet for my cross country trip.

The Hornet DS motivated me to get a different/better helmet. Although I've worn them with several dual sport bikes for tens of thousands of miles, I found them not to be conducive to long rides on the S10 due to excessive noise and poor wind management. In addition, it's not a good candidate at all for long distance riding as it's far from rain-friendly. Getting an excellent seal at the perimeter strip has been all but impossible and therefore it leaks and fogs terribly. I consulted with Shoei and several dealers to no positive effect.

For fair-weather short-distance riding it's a good, light helmet.

2014 ES, OEM windscreen, high position. Now using a Neotec with no problems whatsoever. Good luck with your decision!

I've run a Hornet for years with a OEM windshield & Madstat bracket. Gets the job done & I often ride with the face shield up. I trend more to off road riding so things that might bother a pure street guy doesn't bother me much. Something to keep in mind is how long has the helmet been produced and parts availability. Last time I checked replacement face shields ran about $80, which is a little pricey to me for a D/S helmet.

Don't have a 14 but I do own the Hornet. Rarely use it on my 12 unless its a short ride and summer. Its loud, drafty, the bill catches a lot of air and generally not as comfortable as my Shoei RF-1100s.

I have a Fly DS helmet that I love wearing in the heat of the summer because of the improved airflow and light weight. I have no issues with the bill catching wind. I'm sitting behind a Vario windscreen on a stock mount ('13 model), and a Seat Concept seat in either position. I do use the winglets and they make a huge difference in the way the air flows around rider. I use a Neotech the rest of the time.
