Such winter bike doldrums...

I'm a winter lover. I love snow. I love blizzards (especially when they materialize...in SW CT and the NYC area, we just got a "meh" storm. I love the cold.

But man, do I miss my bikes. My SuperTen and my Vespa are hunkered down in a frozen garage. I visited them on Monday while I was pulling out the snowblower.

The only bike stimulation I've had was ordering a Sena SMH10 from Revzilla, and installing it in my helmet. Then I went out to the garage to get the Bluetooth link working with the GPS. I went back to the house and lay on my bed with my helmet on and listened to Bluetooth music from my iPhone. It was both cool and depressing at the same time.

Other than that, bike-nada. And with all due respect, I keep checking this forum hoping for some fresh, exciting bike stuff...but it's like a painfully slow news cycle. I guess it's kinda universal. For many riders, January is the cruelest month.

Even though I'm a skier, hard to work up the same head of steam for it. It's not like I lurk on ski message boards. Not the same thrill.

I miss my bikes.

Yea,i hear ya...I'm also in the snow belt of western NY but the older i get the less i like the winters....They just seems to last so long and i too miss riding my bikes too. I,m a skier too but finding it harder to drag myself to the slopes. Not quite as much enjoyment for me as riding and fussing with the bikes. I'll raise a glass for an early spring!

I feel the same way. Received mine in Dec and only put 26 miles on it before all the white stuff started showing up. Lucky I have snowmobiles to take me through the winter or I would go bat shit!!

+1 here. I am seriously considering adding a Ural to the fleet so I can ride year-round.

I don't know why, but the word Ural makes me laugh.

I don't have to hear and see 600,000,000 Harleys. I can't ride, they can't either. Makes 10 below zero tolerable for me indefinitely.

Best quote ever in a movie was in Spy Games. As old and rookie CIA spies, Robert Redford told Brad Pitt

Put away some money so you can die someplace warm and don't ever touch it. Not for anyone, ever.

Seriously, I am with you. I find the ocean re-invigorating so am visiting family near Pensacola and ran on the beach yesterday. I was in shorts jogging and the locals were in winter coats with gloves.

I have fallen into a pattern of upgrades and all-out rebuilds in the winter, to keep the motorcycle juices flowing. (Actually, motorcycles and adventure riding are pretty much all I think about anyway.) I do some sort of upgrade to the Tenere, which this year was full suspension from Cogent. That is my last upgrade, since I have now done them all on that bike.

Last year I bought a DRZ 400 and completely overhauled it. This year I bought a 2000 DR650 which I have taken down to the frame for reinforcement and powdercoating, installing a 790cc big bore, suspension upgrades, etc, etc, etc. This one will be a keeper, but next winter I am going to buy a bike solely for the purpose of working on it and then selling it in the spring, hopefully for a profit.

Also, my wife got me the Long Way Round DVD for Christmas and we watched that, and are currently watching Long Way Down. I had never watched them before, and they are probably among my favorite programs EVER. Absolutely fantastic programs about Ewan Macgregor and Charley Boorman riding around the world on BMW GS's, for anyone not familiar with the show.

Stay busy.............spring is coming !!!!!

Long Way Around...........dang those guys!

That movie causes me to dream up more ways to continue to RTW-ize my Big Pig.
I may never actually do a RTW trip in entirety. But I have and will continue to do different "legs" of one.

I think that IS the addiction that the Tenere provided that I didn't see coming. Riding, was already an addiction. But the constant desire to build the most indestructible pack mule possible is new to me.
It is my quest. I'm having a ball with this bike as the platform. And it IS the best platform, considering the intention.

But man it sucks to have PERFECT weather while I'm doing winter upgrades. Arggggghhhh. :lamp:

if you like Ewan & Charlie check out Austin Vince, the guy is a legend ! No big budget or big bikes for him -

Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa are fabulous films, done on a fairly tight budget but really well filmed and edited. Myself and Littledave bumped into him at the NEC bikeshow last year and his enthusiasm is infectious !

Mark me off as a winter hater as well. After hanging up my skis, I've had no use for the cold and snow.

The one positive is I don't feel guilty about putting in well over 200 hours at work last month. If I have to be working nights and weekends I'm much happier doing it when the weather sucks. I'm limited in the number of hours I can bill, so I'm going to take all that time off during the warm weather before the end of August. I once did 250+ hours in the summertime and really hated thinking about what wonderful weather I was missing. Those thoughts don't cross your mind in January.
