Stupid Heated Gear Question from a Southerner

Okay, so my stuff arrived from Warm n Safe today, and I plan to get it wired up tomorrow. I got the jacket liner, heated gloves, and Dual Remote Heattroller.

I'm going straight off the battery for the harness, and I know I need the plug on the left side of the bike, so if anyone wants to share their routing strategy for the harness I'd appreciate it.

Thought I'd ask before I go tearing in there and doing something stupid. It may be painfully obvious once I get into it, but I thought I'd ask just in case there's a chance I may muck it up somehow.

Thanks in advance...

Hey, creggur dude. I don't think there is any one way to do it. It's pretty straight forward. You'll find a good spot for the hookup. I have the battery wire coming out on the right side there somewhere, up top, and then I connect the thermostat to that and hook the thermostat to the lower end (closest to me) of my tank bag. My thermostat controller has a little clamp on the back, so I just unzip my tank bag about an inch, and clamp it on the lower part of the bag and then snug the zippers up against from both sides. Then it's just a short trip to my jacket. Works really well for me. Hope this helps. R

By the way, the lower ….. I think POSITIVE … terminal on the battery …. the nut on the inside is not secured. It will fall out and it is an ABSOLUTE PAIN IN THE @$$ to re-thread the screw. I've done it in 2 minutes, and last time it took me about 35 minutes. MADDENING. I'm going to silicone it in place next time, if there is a next time. Just be forewarned. If I was gonna do it again, I'd go in a day ahead of time and glue the sucker in place before I ever pulled the screw out. Maybe it's just me ::010::

Personally, I have extreme dislike for that particular back-fastener on the + terminal for the reasons you cite. I blame it for certain unkind words emanating from my lips on a couple occasions.

For the heated gear, I placed one of Gerbing's ports on the left side of the plastic box, forward of the seat key lock. Convenient location & if I forget to unplug, the cable just pops out as the tether shortens when I dismount/walk away. I am sure others have figured out even better places.

I chose to install switched power via a 30 amp relay but the routing could be the same. There's plenty of room straight across under the tank and with a couple zip ties it's tidy and out of the way.

Have fun and enjoy the new warmth!

I've got two points to hook up, due to both us having heated jacket liners. Mine is a Powerlet plug on a small panel that I made. It is straight above the left foot peg and forward of the seat lock. It's wired to switched power and the wires follow the existing harness.

The second is the outlet and fused wire that is simply routed between our seats and I don't remember which + terminal it is off of, in whether it is switched or not. I needed something quick and just threaded the positive side of the wire under the tank with a few zip-ties. Any more I use hers when riding solo and just re-route it between the tank and front seat. The ground point is one of the two tank pivot/frame bolts near the forward left corner of the seat.

Thanks for the responses - looks like we're going down into the 30's tonight (I know that's prolly summer temps for you, Rem) so an early morning Christmas ride to try the new stuff out will be in order.

And thanks for the warning on the battery nut - one of the reasons I love this place - always good info floating around here!

I ran my jacket connector right up the middle comes out b/w the seat and the gas tank. when I sit down its right there in my lap ready to connect. Seems to work pretty well.

New question from a south westerner. I have the W & S wireless heat-troller. Looking for a good place and way to mount it. Needs to be easy on and off since I use it on two bikes. Any ideas? Thanks Wade

It's a lot easier to get you some positive at the starter rely than the battery. Hook it up once and your done, no hard to get along with battery bolt.
