I installed the Yamaha OEM heated grips yesterday. Today during my 190 mile test ride ::001:: I did notice the lower temperature of the left grip that folks have talked about. I used a single layer of electrical tape under the grip to prevent the heat loss, but it didn't work like I'd hoped. While riding, my right hand would get too warm, while my left was just right. I can deal with this, but I would love to fix the problem if I could.

I wonder if shooting the left side of the handlebar full of expanding insulating foam would help alleviate this condition.

What do you think?

Yeah, they're damn expensive. That said, they put out more heat than any other heated grip I've owned by a convincing margin. I don't think you can ever totally balance the heat from R to L by insulation alone, because the throttle tube has an air gap. About the only way to totally get them balanced is to contol each grip independently which is more trouble than it's worth, IMO...or buy two sets, then cut-n-splice to where you have two throttles...one being a dummy :D

I wonder if we are really feeling a different temperature or if it is just heat loss from operating the clutch lever? I find that it will feel cooler when blowing through the gears but not so much when just constantly cruising with both hands on the grips the same amount.

Unfortunately, it is for real. I confirmed over a 10 degree difference with a temperature thingamabob.

I used heat shrink on the clutch side and seem to have even temps using that under the cheapie symtec heaters. I use low heat usually since hi heat is almost too hot.

I always use some fiberglass tape that is used with industrial heat tracing electric freeze protection under the left grip and it works well. Regular electrical tape has good electrical insulating properties, but not worth a darn for thermal insulating.

I noticed a slight temp discrepancy (don't recall which was hotter) when I first got mine, but have mostly forgotten about it. I'd ride a few miles and see if maybe you're just being hyper-sensitive to something new.

Since the heating elements are in the grip itself rather than an element you bond to the bar, I doubt some thin insulation like heat shrink or tape makes much difference. I didn't bother.
