I have side case racks on my s10 and I would like to remove my passenger handles to allow me to put a small tent between the bike and the pannier can I just put a few washers in place of the handles to keep the panniers straight?

Yes. I did this on my Gen 1 with some spacers I picked up at the local hardware store.

Yamaha sell a spacer kit to use with no grab handles. Here's a link to the European parts for the Gen 2 (also available for Gen1).

I presume Yamaha also stock them in the US?
