Suffice to say i'm absolutely pissed off, but relived i have it back.

Now i'm trying to figure out what the damage is, I no longer have a working steering lock & from looking at the parts fische I can't quite figure out the mechanism

Is it the funky #4/5/6 washers on https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5944982/xt1200z-super-tenere/steering that someone engage each other? or something closer to the ignition switch?

the bent bit in the middle is where the steering lock engages - not sure if that is repairable, probably not at the place i normally take it to anyway.

the white bit is cracked sintered metal - looks to be only available in part # 2BS-W8250-00 at >1k GBP.

Suffice to say my pissed offness won't be reducing for a while so it's time for a beer

I reckon an insurance assessor would write that off.

The bent part is part of the frame,

It is, but not a structural part and not a safety concern as such.

It needs lopping off with an angle grinder, and a replacement fabricating... I'll see what the shop can offer.

Claiming a write off on a 50k mile bike would not be economically sound I fear.

Very annoying, that some poeple don't the difference on "mine" and "yours"
But did it not have the immobilizer, you being in UK?

You don't tell us the age of the bike, or likely trade value.

My take though is that this is not an economic repair on a 50k bike, so why bother replacing a locking system that is so easily defeated. Just make safe any damage & use alternative countermeasures ........ or claim on your insurers & move on.

my thought is they picked the bike up and broke the lock at another location . looks like they had to hammer on it to defeat it and that makes noise.... thieves are relentless and bold at times , if they put that effort into a legitimate work effort they would probably be well off. had an old car stolen off my property a week ago , amazing the effort they go through. I hate thieves.... and liars.... and ....

it's a `16 - just short of it's expensive 48k service, i imagine it'd be ~6k if sold & repair likely to run to 2k.

They didn't get it started, it does have an immobilizer.

I've not got the cctv yet but i imagine they sat on the seat and pushed the bars with a leg to break the steering lock - then had a co-conspirator push the bike from a (probably stolen) moped using their foot on a pillion footrest. If the CCTV shows anything interesting I'll share it on here.

No point claiming this - I think the raised premiums over the next 5 years will add up to more than the repair, and i have the cash in the bank.

I've spoken to the shop i normally take it to, they are reasonably confident about the frame repair - i was more worried about that part than the money for parts.

Making safe means replacing the steering lock, which is only available as a complete immobilizer kit part number.

If i had seen how damaged the ignition bit was i likely wouldn't have ridden it home tbh.

In the uk we have http://partfinderuk.co.uk/ and others, i'm sticking requests onto those & i'll be scouring ebay and asking some local S10 groups to find out if one is likley to be broken down in the near future.

If anyone is aware of a Gen2 being broken for parts following crash damage please let me know!

There is a Gen 1 kit on ebay for £500ish but i don't think it is compatible with the different dash, mapping etc.

Hi,

I have the same problem. The thieves broke the steering lock and took the bike. Lucky me I have GPS tracker installed.
My mechanic tried to fix it so I could ride it but the lock part won’t work. It didn’t switch off the bike. He could fix the lock past removing it.

How did you fix it? What part did you buy?

Thanks,
Erik

I'm missing something, how is a broken steering lock a safety problem? In 11 years on my Ténéré I've never used the steering lock.

The whole ignition piece housing the key barrel/steering pock mechanism/immobiliser gubbins had a giant crack round it.

The key lock pin was rattling about - it could have engaged with a bit of the then bent flange that the pin engages with.

Imagine riding along and suddenly the bars wont move
