Still pondering...NOT!

Well, I finally signed up and I'm thinking of purchasing a blue 2012 S10 ::012::. I live in North Georgia (Ellijay) and I've been riding a DL1000 for the past three years. Previously, I rode a DRZ400S, and other dual sports. I commute on my Vee and ride as much as I can. I ususally take two or three long weekend trips per year - sometimes more.

While I've owned the Vee, I farkled it pretty good with a full set of Givi luggage (E-41s and an E-52), Sargent seat, Dan Vesel highway pegs, fender extender, Eastern Beaver 3CS, SW-Motech EVO side racks, Amotostuff top case mount, grip puppies, MRA windshield, Aprilia mirrors, satellite radio, a centerstand, and a Cortech Super Mini tank bag - probably some more stuff too.

I've lurked on this site for a while now and I'm looking forward to learning more. Anyway, I want an S10 and a local dealer has a blue 2012. They've quoted me an out-the-door price, but I think it's a little high. Hopefully I can work on that.

Talk with ya'll soon.

Well, I picked up my blue 2012 S10 yesterday ::001::. I'm glad I didn't ride it before purchase, otherwise I would have bought it without proper negotiations. It was beginning to rain...again, but I just couldn't ride it straight home. Bike had 0.4 miles on the odo, but when I arrived home, it indicated 103. It was a wet ride, and I did a small stretch of gravel - actually a soupy mess due to all the recent precip - and I was sliding around. I also had to wait on a tree to be cut. Overall it was great...ok...awesome ;D. When I sat on the bike in the showroom last week, I thought the seat was in the low position, but now I know it's not. I was way up on my tip toes. My first impressions were that I sat higher on S10 vs. my Vee - obviously since the seat's higher. Also, I was used to my Sargent on the Vee, which lowered me and sat me back a little. The S10's seat was relatively comfortable, and the ergos seemed fine. I spent most of the ride on Sport mode, because of the curvy mountain roads, although, at this point, I don't really know the difference between the two modes. Here are a few pics:

Welcome on, nga from north Georgia. Sounds like you know what you're doing. One word of advice, if you're in any doubt whatsoever, DON'T RIDE THE TENERE. Once you ride it, you'll be committed and will be unable to back out. You'll be toast. You'll have to have one. So proceed with caution. ::025:: Anyway, ::004:: to the Forum. R. ::022::

NGA. Nice part of the country for riding! Great area for an Adventure bike as well. If you want to ride one both on and off road, GSMmotorent in Townsend, TN (just north of you) has a very nice Twisted Throttle-farkled black one for rent. Very nice. Unfortunately, they go to TX for the winter but will be back in the spring to open through to late fall.

I'm interested in knowing what they quoted if you ont mind. I just made a OTD offer to my local dealer and they turned it down. They are saying TTL and fees is $3,000 on top of the "sale" price. They are out of their freaking minds. The bike has been sitting on their floor for over 4 months.

Re: Still pondering...

My 2c worth: I'm 63, riding since 15, had many types, recently '03 dl1000, '95 Tiger 855, '06 fjr, dr650 (rode in WA mtns.), '93 TDM850, now have well used '12 Tenere. This bike feels WAY different and suprisingly nimble. Now I haven't ridden it much as I'm in N. MI and bought when winter was coming (and it's here). I think the DL1000 motor has more guts and the six speed is nice but got rid of mine because of the "box kite" effect of windy, hiway riding behind traffic. You won't be disapppointed with the Tenere but you have a well farkled DL and unless you want to get into rougher roads, it will serve your purpose. But, if the difference in $$ isn't a problem, go for the Tenere. Might want to check Honda East in Toledo, OH for maybe the best price OTD. 18 hr. drive from Atlanta or fly/drive it. Just an old man's opine.

Re: Still pondering...

As rem posted, Don't ride the Tenere unless you are really in the market. that is how I got hooked and I let a friend of mine who has a DL1000 ride mine. He now won't buy anything else for his DL because he is going to get a S10 this spring.... ::025:: Oh! Go ahead and ride it.... that way you will be over it and can just make your decision... ::022::

Re: Still pondering...

Had a DL1000, had a few issues with the way it worked, watched the S10 owners for a while, started to realize that the S10 would do better at the things the DL was good at and much better than the things it wasn't quite good at.

So I bought one, after I did a test ride to make sure it wasn't a right/left wing conspiracy of course. :D

Had both for a while, never rode the DL, sold the DL...

The S10 is just about perfect for me. An XT900 would have probably been perfect, but they only exist in videos at the moment.

Re: Still pondering...

Thanks for all the welcome comments and "encouragement." Salmon Sam, thanks for the heads up on the rental tip, I often ride through Townsend.

Danno, I'm gonna send you a pm.

Haar, I agree with your comments. I went by and sat on the S10 today, and it looks and feels narrower than the Vee. The S10's side stands seems to be "tucked" under the bike more than the Vee. I'm 5'8" with a 30 inch inseam. I'm pretty sure the S10's seat was in the low position and I was on my tip toes - almost flat-footed. Yeah, I like my farkles and I'd do them again, but in a different order.

Re: Still pondering...

nga, whatever you decide, welcome the asylum. I bought my S10 for a ride to Alaska that never happened. But have been commuting and taking a couple decent trips per year. I've grown to love it and think it's an outstanding bit of engineering. Coming from a Versys, the S10 was a big step up in terms of comfort and flexibility for me.

Oh yeah, about that tucked under sidestand: first "flaw" I noticed. Fixed it though. I have a thing for these things as I was "thrown off" an '84 Goldwing because of a kickstand being left down (pre kill switch era). I have the hockey puck fix for this . . . on the TDM also: place and trace puck under sidestand plate (larger than stock footprint naturally), drill holes in plate, drill holes in puck, counter sink holes in bottom of puck (optional). Think I used #12 machine with locknuts. Works for me and N. MI sand (and I personally know what GA sand is like - Ft. Gordon, '69) Now that you've sat on it . . . whip out the cash. Don't you wish buying a new bike was the toughest decision you'll ever make? -N. MI Haar *(-_-)*
