I would love to go there for the scenery, but I do not like riding hair pins. Give me some high speed corners any day over that. I'm probably in the minority, though.

I agree. In general I prefer high speed corners too, and there are plenty of those all over the Alps to keep you going for a lifetime !! But that pass just has to be done :)

It's definitely a bucket-list ride, but do try and time things for early/ate on a week day as there can be a lot of traffic - it's on a LOT of people's bucket lists, including tour-bus operators, bicyclists, sports cars, and everything in-between. Fortunately, Stelvio is pretty wide-open so you if you've got a bike with some beans, you can pass pretty easily on the short straights between hairpins and in Europe you can pass very aggressively. There's a lot of other passes in the area that aren't as spectacular but are actually more fun, mainly because they are less popular.

I love hairpins.

::008:: Yes we are doing it on a weekday and as you say early/late. We are also doing the Glossglockner in Austria and a few other passes more off the beaten track

I've ridden the Stelvio for the last six years, will do it again this year. Ya gotta visit the wurst man at the summit for lunch, take a table, order a beer, relax and enjoy being in heaven. ::008::

It's more then just a road, it's the thrill of being in the high Alps surrounded by beautiful scenery and sharing the moment with like minded riders from all over Europe. For me It's a very special place and I make it a point to visit when in the hood. Nothing in this country compares.

Atop the Grossglockner is a dead end road to the summit, Edelweisspitze. At the very summit look over the rail from the marker sign and see if my helmet is still lodges in the rocks behind the restaurant. I set my helmet on the curb to take some photos, a gust of wind blew the helmet down the mountain! I met several nice Austrian police officers on my way north to Salzburg to buy a helmet. ::010::

If you see a BMW F800GT with the Florida plate EATN PIE, say hello, I'll buy ya a beer or two!

Yeah, but not in Illinois! ::025::

Next time your in that area drop south into Ga. on 68 from Telico Plains, then and ride 60, 180(Wolf Pen Gap, and 129 over Blood Mountain, and visit Two Wheels of Suchs. I prefer that area to the Dragon/129 in NC. Hope had a chance to ride the Cherohala Hwy while you were there.

I'm not saying it's better or worse than any other road whether in the US or Europe, there are fantastic roads the world over, and the Stelvio is definitely one of them.
I was just sharing my excitement at going !

And you should be, it's a great road ::008:: I would imagine most bikers have heard of the Stelvio world over, few, even those in the US know the great roads in the US. The Alpine region has some of the best roads for motorcyclists, I prefer riding through the Swiss National Forest on the way to Stelvio, then the other pass' on the way back.

I'm sure you will enjoy it and I'm soooo jealous.

We were in that part of the world in 2009, and planned to ride the Stelvio on 21st June of that year (longest Day) unfortunately it was closed due to snow...I hope that you are luckier than we were.

Post some pictures on your return please ::008::

rode the Stelvio a couple of years back, probably not the best pass to ride but certainly the most iconic and memorable, enjoy!

We had that problem with the Grossglockner last year, that was in May so we are hoping it will be okay for both passes in late June ??? Fingers crossed !! I will put some pictures up when I get back.

Myself and Littledave will be riding the Stelvio on the 23rd of June this year. We have two nights in Lake Como and then are going over the Stelvio for two nights in Nauders, Austria. I last did the Stelvio in 2012 on a Moto Guzzi Stelvio, which was nice ::008::

Hope you got to Mandello del Lario to visit the Guzzi museum and the dealership of the great one...... Giocomo Agostini!
