Steering locked while riding

Yesterday I rode the Tenere to town, pulled into a Kwik Trip gas station for breakfast, as I was turning left into a parking spot the steering locked tight so I had to stop and nearly tipped over ! Wiggled the handlebars and they came unlocked, so I put the side stand down and got off the bike looking to see what caused it to lock, didn’t see anything but there was a small piece of a rock laying on the pavement where I had stopped but who knows where that might have come from. An old high school friend was there and saw it happen so he came over to investigate, we both were looking to see what possibly could have caused the steering to lock but didn’t notice anything. So after breakfast I rode over to my local Yamaha dealer only half a block away and everything seemed to be working normal. Went inside and talked to the guys at the service counter, first thing they asked was does your Tenere have a steering damper ? Nope no damper so the guy says I will come out and take a look at it, well he almost instantly sees a bunch of small rocks sitting on the edge of the triple tree wher the stops are, they were almost the same color as the triple tree so that’s my excuse for not seeing them myself earlier. He told me to pull up to the shop door and he would blow the rocks out with a air hose. i feel very lucky that this happened at very low speed in a gas station parking lot or the results could have been terrible, if the bike had tipped over the rocks most likely would fall out by themselves and everyone would have been saying the rider did something wrong.

Wow! What a strange occurrence. Thanks for the heads up, checking my bike now!

I wonder if you have a fender extender and if not would adding one help? Thinking those rocks might have gotten tossed up there by the front tire?

i suspect it was only one rock but it got crushed into several small pieces, one of the small pieces is what I suspect caused the steering to lock.
Since returning from Canada in July where we rode 1200 miles of gravel roads I haven’t ridden on gravel much.

No fender extender on my Tenere and I really don’t know how that rock got in there but it did and I feel very lucky for it not causing a very serious accident. If I would have fallen over in that parking lot the Little Rock’s probably would have fallen out and I never would have been sure what caused it.

Used to have fender extender on front of Goldwing and it was very effective at preventing sand from getting stuck in radio controls. After about 350,000 miles the front fender broke and Honda refused to replace it under warranty, that was the only warranty item Honda ever refused me so I ain’t complaining, I repaired the fender with epoxy and I’m still using it today without an extender, I don’t ride the Goldwing on gravel much anymore but almost every time I do some sand manages to get stuck in the radio controls .

Well, if you ride as much as you do and in such varied locations……..strange things are going to happen. It clued me in that looking for errant rocks will be part of my pre-ride inspection! Good deal on not crashing:)

Wow! That's rather unnerving to hear. Glad it happened in a relatively low consequence environment. Scary stuff.
