Any chance they can re-use the original valve cover gasket? They’re meant to be reusable if not damaged.

They had already ordered the new gasket. And I’m sure they’ll want their money for it...and likely a markup, as well.

Ok, if I read your post correctly they had already done the job once to your satisfaction, with good results. I also understand your frustration.

Valve adjustment is a big pain in the butt job. Many farm it out and pay to have it done. Some have posted they screwed up and lost the motor in attempting this.

I would advise a face to face talk. Make sure they are telling you the whole truth. If it’s just the gasket then set out to obtain one for them. I figure they were smart enough to do the job once then they were smart enough to reuse the old gasket. It’s probably TOAST. eBay, the forum, other dealers, it’s a big country there are a few gaskets out there, to be sure.

I believe they might be agreeable to knock something off the price especially if you say nice things in the forum about them. Or a decent Google review. Bad comments on the web are death to such a place.

Hope this helps
there will be a face to face this next Friday. As to whether or not they demonstrate any character and admit they could’ve gone about it any better is another thing.

bought an item from a company not long ago . a gift for my wife . spot on service and was here on time . 4 weeks ago I ordered from them again . and again it's a gift for my wife (she really liked the first one , so another in a different color ) a just because gift . no sign of it being ready to ship or even being manufactured . their e-mail after order was it may now take up to 9 weeks to complete order . crap .... it will be here when it gets here ..... they could have had a instock or not flag on their site . maybe I would have ordered a different item .... what they make is great quality , the problems they are having is the sign of the times . if I get upset I could cancel my order but then I have no gift .... ffffffft.
I ordered a dash cover for my car , it will ship on the 8th they say. today is the 12th and it aint shipped yet either..... ff

I agree. I try to avoid the area around the citadel shopping mall like the plague. Hang in there.
Thanks, bud. The 5 is a straight shot from downtown LA to my house, but I've rode past enough corpses to make me extra cautious in that particular segment of road. Hope you stay safe out there as well.

I totally get what you're saying....er, I mean TYPING. From my perspective, all this long wait (and holding my bike hostage for six weeks) could have been avoided if they had simply had me continue riding until ALL the parts were in. That's just basic customer service 101. One of the mechanics, Brian, was apparently on vacation, and he's the one who works on the Japanese bikes and he acknowledges that they could have handled the customer service side of the equation MUCH better. He told me not to expect an apology from the other guy. All the technical prowess in the world doesn't mean jack if a person can't check his/her ego at the door and admit when they've wronged someone else. Believe me, I've eaten my share of humble pie more than once in my life, and frankly, I give people a lot more respect when they man up (or woman up) and admit when they've screwed up.

As things currently stand, the bike IS back together rather than in pieces, so that part is good. The mechanic with a conscience wants to ride it tomorrow to make extra sure that there are no leaks around the gasket, which I appreciate. So hopefully I'll pick up the bike tomorrow. It would be nice to get some concessions in the form of a discount for the extra long wait, but I'm certainly not holding my breath. The only thing I know is that if the mechanic with a conscience decides to start his own business, I know which guy will continue to get my business and which one will be left behind without a 2nd thought.

sounds like your about to get your bike bike and hopefully they did everything correctly . and if all is well you get 26 thousand miles of happy riding before a chance to do this all over again . the lesson here as I see it is make sure everyone is on the same page about what and when something is to be done , a good reminder for us all in these times. post a picture of your machine , we like pictures.
I got a notice that my dash cover for my car has finally shipped , not a clue about my wife's gift . I finally told her that it was a because gift , she is excited , but now it is a mothers day gift . and if it takes longer than that it will become an anniversary gift. it had better not be a Christmas gift ,pfffft!

I’m still in mechanic hell. I got the bike back, but now the cruise control doesn't work! The light indicates that it’s on when I push the button, but the cruise doesnt engage. And it worked prior googling to the shop. These guys are something else.

Sorry about the delay on your wife’s gift. Your issue may be resolved before mine!

That doesn't mean the tech did anything wrong.
My bike did the same after sitting over winter, lost cruise control. The brake switch at the foot control was activated, I had washed the bike and parked it which in turn caused an issue with the switch hanging up. All it needed was WD40 and its been good since, cruise control is working 100%.
More then likely one of the switches is hanging up. Clutch, front brake or rear brake.

Cool, thanks. I’ll check it out.

Wish I had your level of mechanical aptitude!
Aptitude is an attitude. Just buy a shop manual, ask questions, buy the tools you need as you need them and set your mind on learning. Nobody is born knowing how to do everything.

It’s too many experiences like yours than convinced me to become a dedicated DIY-er. A side benefit I discovered is an incredible feeling of satisfaction.

all things considered ,though not great service , you got your bike back . now you can ride.
Yes! I’ll eventually get cruise control back once the switch comes in, but I can ride for now. I’ll take take what I can get, at this point!

They are easily damaged because of the awkwardness of fitting the valve cover. We have the same problem in Australia where Yamaha dealers keep very little stock. My plan is to order the gasket before handing the bike to my bike shop who is not a dealer so if it gets damaged they have the spare one on hand.
