:D you funny...... The 'experts' say you need three types of fire starters... I know in MY past the BIC lighters have failed or run out right when I need the one I had....... ( You might carry and pack of five lighters:) If I happen to have nothing else, I just wanted the mental know how of what it really takes and what I will need to do and expect to get a fire going with only wood.... Good times ::012::

Trust me, I'm funnin ya because I'm jealous.

But if I have Bic(s) & the Jetboil with me, that's 2 sources. Can my 3rd be a magnifying glass?

Can you tell I'm too lazy to go caveman?

Besides, how do you know a Home Depot will be nearby?

Actually, I heard if you park the Tenere just right, and you have the OEM shield, you can just place some kindling in the right spot on the dash and PRESTO.

So many different ways.

The real, "I am man, I make fire" moment comes when you do it with nothing other than what you have from you surroundings. It's like winning the lottery.

Depending on what part of the country your in, cedar shavings, cat tails, and birch make great tinder. For the "Be prepared" group, cotton balls in vaseline, drier lint, and tampons work great also. I have always had a magnesium fire starter and a knife nearby. Makes quick work with tinder.

This is interesting.
Ok, so now we can make fire the old fashioned way. What's next?

Collect water with a vapor still? Is that what its called, piece of plastic sheet over a hole in the ground, place cup in center, place small rock in center of plastic. Moisture collects on underside of sheet, drips into cup.

Find water with a tree branch? Witch water?

Kill a bear with just a knife? Or was that a Buffalo?
.
.
.
Just funin with you Jaxon.

Wet, dry, hot or cold the best fire starter is a road flare. I've lit wet wood with a road flare.

Hey Bear-ly Grills here. I agree, especially if your into big ADV, and can do the Jaxon challenge/technique you get a satisfaction that if the worst were to happen you could survive, it’s a great test and feeling of accomplishment/survival. Another important skill is day/night identifying direction N-S-E-W and, having and being able to navigate w/ a compass! As well some good first aid knowledge...
Even w/ a Fire Steel and some bad-ass REI-Storm Proof Matches I’ve been Unable to get a fire started in pouring/freezing conditions, that was a long cold evening. ::020::

For sheer effectiveness I like the road flare technique. ::002::

For fire What I often do, is to lay the S10 on it’s side and let some gas drain on my tinder then, disconnect the spark plug, keep it on the wire, give the starter a few cranks and just let the spark from the sparkplug start the fire. But last time I did that I spilled the urine I was drinking and it doused the flames, I hate when that happens! ;o) But, I got out the road flare and started the tires on fire, then I was nice and toasty. ::025::

You kno what they say Jaxon; if they mess with you they love you man. ::)

But really, Great stuff mates!! ::003::

Cheers, dean ::001::

I'm into this stuff.... Its taken me some time to talk my Tenere buddies to being self sufficient and be able to camp anywhere we want, anytime... That's a blast not knowing where you might be that night (to me).... My wife and I are stepping it up this next year, we are back packing out on open range being self sufficient.. We only have a drop of point, map, compass, and back pack full of gear..... She and I did something similar in the rain forest of puerto rico a few years ago. Ill let you know when we take off,,, if you never hear from me again, I went out doing what I loved doing............ ::019::

WETFIRE Fire Starter is a good backup.

*** just checked the internet and these do a shelf life. only one report gave dates, 4 to 5 years ***
