Does anyone know the process of paint spraying these particular new matt paints. I want to change the colour. Not easy apparently when a mate did his matt blue FJR to gloss but I want to paint over it completely... not so straightforward... half the sprayers I am talking to have never done it. 20210521_160733.jpg

Yes wrapping may have to be an option. Before I bought it I did it on my understanding that I have to do something about the drab white and as I will never sell this bike I would invest in a paint job. I love the new 700 Tenere Rally blue with gold wheels and wanted to do it in those colours...IMG_3189.PNG

I would not have it repainted unless it was done by an extremely competent painter and that will make it costly.
As mentioned by Tallpaul a wrap is a great alternative which is also price efficient and offers one a lot of different color/design options and when you get bored you simply pull it off and try something else.

I have budgeted 1K for the spray work which is plenty by a professional, wrapping is about half that. I have experience with wraps on cars and boat hulls. You have to make sure you use quality and thicket wraps, it is far from the ultimate solution. I have seen many deteriorate within just three years from UV damage. It can wrinkle and split and is a reall bugger to get off. It's not the instant solution it appears to be. A couple of wrappers on doing a boat hull actually suggested I didn,t do it and spray paint it instead. Painting is a far better long term solution and looks much better.

I am asking if anyone has fire hand experience. Talking to a Yamaha dealer who organised my mates FJR to be done, it wasn't an easy process on these new Matt paints, may not last etc. I could always take the old paint off and start from scratch. Done this loads of times on classic cars then give it to a pro sprayer.

Matte finishes are easiest done consistently with a clear powder. It is a very niche market. In the US there are a few powder manufacturers that make the requisite clear coats. What I do not know is if those chemistries are available (aka, legal) in the EU and the EU aftermarket. I would suggest checking with shops that specialize in refurbing alloy wheels for what may be available. using a cup powder gun, a tank would require approximately 0.5-0.75 kilos of powder.

FYI, powder can be applied over most 2K solvent borne automotive finishes.

good luck, this a challenging application

Thanks for that wall keeper. I know it is problematic covering these matt paint finishes which few seem to like. People have said they tend do go sticky in time also. They used to use a powder based on chalk supposedly to give the matt finish so I can see how painting over that is tricky. E.g. Getting paint to adhere to the matt coating... I need to call around some more companies, so far I have not managed to find anyone who knows what to do, too many smaller places around me...

It's the lacquer that gives the matte finish - the paint is the same. A paint shop can either just key the surface and apply a new colour with a gloss lacquer (should be about £200) or if you like the existing colour, just put a gloss lacquer on (£100 or so).

I really don’t see what the fuss is about, not really that special for a professional printshop. I’ve done it many times when I still worked there. Just find a shop you trust (not the cheapest one) and I’m sure it will be flawless!

Yes that was the plan from the outset Bimota, to paint my Tenere in the Rally700 Dakar colours with classic speed blocks etc and a yellow patch and maybe the Sonauto logo plus gold wheels. The pics above are a slightly different shade, i will get the paint code off Yamaha. It will be good to see those panels on his bike in a couple of weeks to make a final decision.IMG_3189.PNG
