Since this is now sticky,

does anyone know the torque spec for the spokes?
FIRST
Tap the spoke with a screwdriver. A tight spoke will emit a clear ringing tone; a loose spoke will sound flat.
Check the run-out both axially and radially.

IF tightening is needed and IF it does not negatively affect either run-out measurement, the maintenance manual page on page 3-17 shows the torque as 6 Nm (0.6 m-kgf, 4.3 ft-lbf)

6 Nm - 4.3 ft/ib - 51.6 in/lb

Re: Wheels and spokes

I checked mine last night and found that nearly all of my rear wheel spokes were loose -some more so than others. Starting with the loosest ones, I torqued them all to 6 Nm with no adverse effect on runout in either direction - the wheel stayed perfectly straight and true. My bike currently has 4100 miles on it, so I'd recommend that you check them before a nipple backs off completely and a wild spoke does any damage.

Re: Wheels and spokes

My 2012, with somewhere around 40,000 miles on it, only needed the spokes addressed for the first few thousand miles. They bedded in nicely after that.
(Jaxon says what I am calling "bedded in", he calls corroded into a single piece of metal that couldn't vibrate loose during an earthquake)

However, I just got the wheels cleaned and re-spoked, so I am starting all over again. Can't wait to get them corroded enough to go another 40,000 miles with no worry.

Re: Wheels and spokes

Actually, anodized, re-spoked, and now in the process of paint.
Jaxon did the tear down, got them anodized, then laced them himself.
Not sure what will be done to them during the paint project.

He BEGGED me to not let my nasty corroded wheels spoil the whole Tenere makeover. Lol
I let him fuss a bit. Then I caved. Tough watching a grown man cry.

Pictures soon. When I get to see it.

Re: Wheels and spokes

Sorry to be so dense... but you had the spokes anodized? And now you are getting the wheel painted after you re-spoked it?
Or did you get the wheel anodized? I got lost there somewhere. :-[

Re: Wheels and spokes

Lol sorry for confusion. Wheels anodized. I think they are painting some accents on them? New Yamaha spokes.
The wheels might look nice for a few months. The spokes, about a week.

Re: Wheels and spokes

2000 miles on my new rear wheel/spoke setup, with a full load... it's interesting that there are no loose ones yet. If they were "bedding in" like stock I would expect a few dull-sounding ones by now. Wondering if my spoke guy did something that they don't do at the factory??

Re: Wheels and spokes

OEM spokes Trevor?

Or aftermarket? Just curious.

I hope I get to say the same thing. But I won't be able to stop myself from checking them OFTEN the first few days.
From Alvin Texas to Romney West Virginia......I will be checking like crazy.

About 1400 miles.

I'll trust them by the time I get back home. (3000+ miles)

I'm carrying extra spokes so if I see you on the side of the road on the way there I'll get ya rolling again Snake. But our paths might not intersect as my route to Romney is 2,200 miles and my start point is 40 miles closer than you.

I last checked my spokes after 4,300 miles and all good. One nipple needed a 1/2 turn only. I tie wrapped all of them front and back anyway just as a precaution.

Re: Wheels and spokes

That's a kind gesture there Silverbullet. Thanks!

I don't know my route. I notoriously make it up as I go.
I'm never late or early or lost.

But who knows, we might come within a couple of hundred miles of each other. If so, I might divert your way.

Only way to know though is I'll post up in the Romney thread my travels each day.
Planning on heading out either Sunday after church, or Monday morning early.
I won't even commit to that! Lol

Be safe. And soak up what the road brings ya.

Re: Wheels and spokes

Has anyone anodized the spokes/nipples? Thinking Black on Black like Kawasaki.

Re: Wheels and spokes

Friends in Iota.
Used to play golf in Crowley.

The wife and girls would make a run to stock up on various flavors annually while the boys chased the little white ball.
Then eat crawfish ALL NIGHT long.

Cherished memories.

Not a bad route, but a bit too much interstate for a leisure jaunt.

Re: Wheels and spokes

Wasn't showing a route since I rarely ride a Interstate. Was showing you Tabasco's other business :)

If all goes well I will be visiting Tabasco Sauce Company this year on a Coastal Route trip of the South.

While riding back roads I try to find a place to visit. Doesn't have to be a business or restaurant though maybe a beach or overlook or Surprise ???
