Apparently, there are 3 sizes of spokes for the rear wheel. Here is a quote from Old Git Ray who has rebuilt his wheels more than most of us.

One more thing. There are 3 different types of spokes in the rear wheel. All are different lengths and they have different head angles.

IIRC the longest ones, 16 of, are on the outside on both sides. The middle length ones, 8 of, are on the inside on the disk side and the shortest, 8 of, are on the inside shaft side.
Can you check your spokes and confirm this before I order some to be posted to the UK? Thank you.

I just went over to the shop and took a good hard look at the spokes. It looks like it's the other way around all 16 of the short spokes are the same an there are two different lengths of long spokes. The difference appears to be about two threads. As far as the angle on the outside end of the spoke, if there's a difference it is so slight I can't see it. There has been a lot of discussion on spokes and this is the first I heard of the difference, never too old to learn. With all that said, I don't think the two thread difference in the length will make any difference at all, especially using the spokes for spares. I wouldn't be scared to use the shortest spokes in the place of the longest spoke as there is only 4mm difference. If you're a perfectionist lacing a new wheel, make it 100% correct. If you have a broken spoke on the Haul Road, they will all interchange with no problem at all.

Ray is 100% correct.

The 16 long ones are for the outside (either side).
The 8 middle ones are for the inside disc side.
The 8 shortest ones for the inside drive side.

I have two OEM rear sets and both came with the spokes grouped as long and short but there are, in fact, two slightly different lengths of the (inner) short ones.

Need to buy spare spokes for trip in 2 weeks to S America

Can anyone sell me a couple of each size...we are heavily loaded 2up on a new 2014 ST......we can Paypal or whatever...really scared of not having these as spares. I live in Anacortes WA and will be headed down the I5 corridor to Baja at the end of this month. My email address is svsilverfin@gmail.com and the best way to communicate.
