They want me to tell them how much it is off. I don't have a full GPS. I know that it is off because....I know how fast I am going with less than a 10% tolerance. So today we have to come up with a figure and use the tuner that has been mentioned here before.

Also, I have had many dirt/dual bikes and my long time '85 MaximX. All were pretty close, excepting maybe the DRZ. It was 4 or 5 miles off. My jaguar and VW are spot on.

I understand as an engineer that there are tolerances. but I would be broke and out of work if I worked within a 10% variance.

Jeff

P.S. I love this bike! My dealer says he loves to see me on the road. Says he sees my smile first.

You have no proof that yours is off, yet you're going through all this? Wow.
Anyway, tell them it's 9% high. Everybody else's is. And that changes a bit with old and new tires...

Well, I can only tell within a 15% tolerance myself, without GPS ::025::

Anyway, if anyone is really interested or just wants to ::010:: .... here is what I found regarding allowable speedo error http://www.peterverdone.com/wiki/index.php?title=Speedometer_Calibration

"Findig the exact laws regarding this topic is difficult.

With regard to manufacturing, speedometers are certified by manufacturers to follow EITHER the U.S. SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) J1226 OR the European version, ECR-39. The SAE rule, published in 1983, allows readings to be plus or minus 2 percent of true speed, or on a sliding scale from minus 1 percent to as much as plus 4 percent.

The European standard does not allow underestimation of speed, but does allow overestimation of up to 10 percent plus 4 kph.

SAE J1226 Electric Speedometer Specification--On Road http://www.sae.org/technical/standards/J1226_198302

SAE J966 Test Procedure for Measuring Passenger Car Tire Revolutions Per Mile http://www.sae.org/technical/standards/J966_200011

Odometers are covered in DOT PART C, TITLE 49, Chapter 327, but it makes no mention of accuracy. "

my S10 speedo reads ~8% high (depending on tyre age)
and the odometer is ~2% high

My BMW bikes had speedo errors of 2-3% high and never checked the odometers

I still believe the 8% is too much and is not as a result of tolerances, as all S10's have within 1% the same error

What you are looking for is in the NHTSA Code. Don't have time to look it up right now. It basically states that speedos can read high, but never low.

all motorcycle speedos read high to varying degrees. I can't imagine actually getting angry about something like that. such a minor thing

::021:: I am stunned at what gets some of our knickers all in a knot. ::014:: I know when I have that right grip twisted to the stop ::26:: that I am way over the speed limit and when worried about tickets I run at that honest 10% over that will never get you stopped by the law ::001::

I got a haircut last week. I think they cut it too short by about 1.23mm.

Geebus!!!! It is such old, common knowledge regarding speedo calibration. My Wiki link above, all the years of forum talk, etc., etc.

This may go down as one of the worst winters on record if we have come to judging the merits and joy of our motorcycles by the point on the dial our speedo needle points!!!!

A collection for the last three.

When people are going 75 on my slow two lane highway 55mph commute inwhich I have been driving for years , It is a good sign that my speedo is off by plus ten.

If you bought a hundred gallons of gas and only got 90, would you not be pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If your boss said you would make a hundred a day and only paid you 90, would not be pissed!!!!!!!!
If the electric company charged you for 100 Kw and you only used 90, would you not be pissed!!!!!!!!
If the Gov. said it would tax you 9% and then taxed at 10%, would you not be pissed!!!!!
If you bought an alarm clock and it was 10% off, would you not be pissed!!!!!
If you went to a firefight with 10% less O2 than the gauge said, would you not possibly die!!!!!!!!!

I have a BS in MIS, If I wrote this program I would be out of work!!!!

Old analog speedo calibrations worked on magnets and centrifical force. Lots of variance in all aspects of tolerance levels. Not a math function in a line of code.

X spins in Y time equals Z speed. My five year old could figure this out. ( oh and sure 'spins' has a variance. I would be fine with 3%)

It's the ten percent plus that is not acceptable! What good is something that does not work properly.

It is people like you that put up with shit like this that is the problem. You probably watch Shock-Jock opinion programming and believe that too.

Since you are an engineer, you probably know your multiplication tables. A simple solution to your problem is to ignore the speedo and just look at the tach when you are cruising down your highway in high gear. Just multiply the number you see on the tach by 20 and you will be very close to your speed. For example, when you see the tach needle on 3, multiply that by 20 and you get 60, so you are going 60 mph (or very close).

I use that method on my daily ride to Wal Mart so that I know how fast I am really going instead of letting that bastard speedo lie to me.

I have sympathy with your sentiments!

I can imagine manufacturers love idjits that are too stupid to realise that some "instrument inaccuracies" are actually false advertising.

whoaaa, my bike can do 230km/h - back at the ranch it's only 210km/h
whoaaa, my consumption is only 5l/100km - back at the ranch it's actually 5.5l/100km
whoaaa, my bike only needs a service every 10 000km - erm 9 000km...

I had the same arguments with people that said the S10 not having a gear indicator is no big deal - just calculate it from the rpm.... yes, I'm also an engineer and that's precisely why I would make the instruments more accurate

oddly enough, these are probably the guys knocking the BMW at every opportunity - my experience has been that the BMW has been very accurate in most areas..... and has a gear indicator

All three of the bikes I have owned have had speedo error (2003 SV650S, 2009 Truimph Thruxton, 2012 S10), the two newest ones have been around 10mph off. Not saying it's acceptable, just saying it's the norm. The speedo error is the cause of the only speeding ticket I have on my record, on the Triumph, because I was trying to compensate for it being off.

Since then I've calculated 60mph and 70mph to RPM given my BRAND and MODEL of tire. I could complain, or I can cope and move on.

I only look at the speedometer when the red lights start flashing.

Each to their own suffering, we all have our individual burdens to carry... fix it...complain about it...live with it, or sell it. Same goes for the wife, the car or the house. Move on from what troubles you, life is too short. Peace... ::002::
