Great helmets, blue eyes. TT limited edition is awesome too. Never hurts to have extra helmets. Do you wear these or are they more of a collectible to you? I have two of the now discontinued Quantum IIs -- they seem to fit my giant round head better than anything else, so I bought a spare because I knew they were being discontinued. I'm really baffled that Arai no longer offers any helmets in the Round Oval fit any more....

Coming Friday this classic beauty is gonna be mine and share the garage with my XT1200Z and KLX250:

RD350 LC YPVS N2 1986 63HP from a private collection.

Luv the smell of two-stroke in the morning! ::001:: ::001:: ::001::
My 1st bike was the R5 350. Used to love beating up the Honda 750"s for a 1/4 mile. After that they had me.

Thanks!
I use all helmets except the TT Isle of Man one, that is a collectible....

Arai can deliver all internal fittings seperately. Mayby you can choose a new helmet and have it stuffed with Quantum IIs internals?

I know the feeling, you have something that is just great and then they discontinue it.... I often buy multiple pairs of shoes for that reason... haha.

Take care!

Cheers,

Kees

Besides my new Tenere, I own a 2009 Harley Davidson XR1200. It is an interesting bike and a load of fun to ride, but only for an hour at a time for me.
I'm sad to find out that Harley is not gonna sell it anymore. They attempted to sell a sportier bike in America, and failed. They didn't try hard enough with the design or the marketing of it. Not surprising, remember Buell? Killed that off too.
I don't see them changing their ways in the near future. I will probably never sell my XR1200, It's too cool and fun and I think will be a unique HD .......forever.

I considered one of these before I bought the S10. It would have been my first HD in 40 years of riding bikes. Finally, an HD with real suspension and brakes! But, then I heard about the swelling gas tank issue and the way that HD was (or wasn't) handling it. This was one of the reasons I traded my Ducati Multistrada for a Street Triple. So, I bought the S10 instead and have no regrets.

I used to have a Daytona 675 and a VStrom 650. Very very happy with both...
I just sold both to buy a Super T... The T isn't with me yet... I can't wait to ride it...

2005 KLR 685. I have enjoyed riding this motorcycle for 40,000 miles though have not rode it since buying the Tenere.

Hi John,
Great choice with the S10! ::022::
The XR1200 is also my first HD in 30 years of riding. I got it because I love it's dirt track XR750 inspired looks. To me it's how a bike is supposed to look. Like Evel Knievel's HD's, ahhh, my boyhood hero.

Anyway, the suspension on the 2009 actually sucked, incredibly harsh, oversprung out back, undersprung in front etc..... just did not work well at all on less than perfect pavement. The new fully adjustable Showa suspension you would get if you bought the 2010 and up XR1200" X" model is somewhat better. I actually upgraded to those forks and shocks, it was avalable as an HD suspension upgrade "kit" in 09. The front brakes are as good as most any, real strong but maybe lacking a little feel at the lever. The rears, well, they kinda feel like an afterthought to me......similar to the metal shoe rubbing up on the tire of your old 5 hp Briggs and Statten powered mini machine back in the day. I harldy use rears anyway. The bike handles well enough for the street if you at least upgrade the suspension on the 09's, but it's still an 580 pound bike. Steers pretty slowly, but has always been stable. With far more ground clearance than, say, a WIDE Glide, you can ride it far more agressively than any other Harley ever made, and I have no problem keeping up with any bikes in the mountiains and twisties here on Long Island. ??? You do have to work harder at it, and it may batter you after a little while if you are semi old and slightly worn out, like me. :)) The s10 is a lot easier to ride fast and long! You only get 100 miles outa the xr gas tank anyway.

As far as the gas tank issue, I'm the one who actually started off that HUGE thread about the gas tank swelling over on the XR forum! I've had 3 tanks on the bike and just gave up, would rather not be bothered over and over. The third tank is swelled up, but not nearly as much as the other two, so the problem did vary somewhat. That being said, I'm aware of NONE of the HD plastic tanks ever leaking or coming loose as a result of swelling. Nothing like the severe Ducati problem, it is only a slight cosmetic issue here. The problem results from the fact that the black plastic tank is covered with a painted plastic cover or skin, which "pops" up in back when the actual gas underneath tank swells a little. It creates a gap of up to 1/2 inch between the actual tank and the orange cover. No one ever notices it until I point it out. If the tank were one piece without a cover, you would not notice the swelling. I have one of the old tanks on the shelf, and after only a couple weeks sitting there, it shrunk back down to the origonal size! The orange cover goes right on with room to spare. The problem HAS to be a water absorption issue, the tank swelling like a sponge over time with gas in it. If I wanted it to always look perfect, I guess I could keep switching the tanks out as they swell up and shrink back down, but I think I would need to see a shrink if I did that. ::013:: After a while, most of the owners have been able to live with it. ::021::

There is a lot of room for different improvements on the XR, and I made a lot of mods to it. That's half the fun! The damn bike just gets under your skin some how if you keep it long enough. Anybody who tossed the bike after the first tank swelling, I think has missed out on a great motorcycle, something fun and different and kind of rare. Still, in my opinion, if YOU were considering an XR1200 for anything but riding around town or short day trips, you made the right choice going with the S10 instead. The XR is just not practical or comfortable, but it is real fun and an awsome second bike for short rides and getting attention too. People either love it (real motorcyclists, racers, and generally cool people) or laugh and curse it. (ignorant bikers and squids), but it gets everybody talking!

I'm toying with the idea of a new Duke 690 or the 690SM. How much fun is this machine? I'de probably be selling my Street Triple to get it.
Hey John,
I was looking over this thread. Not sure if you ever got a reply to this KTM question, but I demo rode the 690SM at the Americade rally in 2010 and 2011, and .....it was almost as good as sex.
Incredible. Twitchy. High Strung. FUN! I never rode anything like it before or since. The seat is like a 2x4 up your ass though, but I never really noticed after a minute went by because of constant wide eyed adrenalin flow. (This was on a DEMO ride!)

KTM was NUTS like no other manufacturer. I was luckly to be positioned as the first bike right behind the lead, and my buddy Lou was on the Duke 690, second in line. This was our first KTM demo of the day, and ever, at the 2010 event. The leader, me and lou left the rest of the group in the dust! Mr. KTM Leader noticed we were into it and able, and we just took off and never slowed. We saw no other Human Beings until the end of the ride. Their demo ride was a half hour on 90% twisty back roads, the complete opposite of the Harley demos, you barely got to turn those. After that dream demo ride, Me and Lou signed up for as many KTM rides as we could. We rode almost all of them, and most rides were similarly fast, but NONE could match the first ride of the day on that 690SM. I had barely finished a cup of coffee, but the ride blasted me awake better than the caffene. When we got back, we milled around in disbelief, and then approached the leader when he was alone. He knew what we were gonna say and just grinned silently ear to ear as we thanked him profusly for the great memories he just gave us.
Lou loved the 690 Duke too, it was as exciting as I described the SM according to him, but more cofmortable. It was one I didn't get to ride. ALL KTM street bikes are sick awsome handling bikes. I really liked the Adventure DAKAR too, I immediatly felt like I was riding it for years already.

Long Island kinda stinks for the 690's anyway, you really need endless tight mountain curves and sweepers to really enjoy them like they are made for. I would probably get a trailer to take the 690SM up to the Hudson Valley or someplace, because it felt like that seat would eventually slice you in half if you kept riding. The Duke maybe you could ride further, off Island.

Sadly, KTM was not there this year. I think they are not selling streetbikes in the US now?? Any dealers left? No support in NY is one reason I fought the desire to get one. Same with BMW.

Anyway I did get to ride the S10 on a usual, rather boring demo ride on the Wendesday of this years rally. I got home Friday. I BOUGHT it on Saturday! ::022:: ::015::

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the HD post and the KTM catch-up post. My Triumph dealer is Gold Coast (New Hyde Park) and they're also a KTM and BMW dealer among other European brands. I'm disappointed that KTM isn't selling the Duke in the US this year. They've made some effort to soften it a little but also made it cheaper by eliminating the adjustable suspension. That's kind of a deal breaker for me. I'm avoiding going to Gold Coast because I'm afraid of coming in contact with the new Norton Commando. 8) That bike might satisfy my lust for the XR1200 and the Duke. But the price is not friendly. I'll probably keep my Street Triple for a while longer. But if Triumph comes out with a street tracker Bonneville with some higher-end components at a reasonable price, the wait is all over. ::008::

Best,
John

Man there are some awesome backroads bikes here!

Have not seen anyone with one of these yet, So I will post mine

2005 MZ Baghira- What a great bike! I got this in 2009 with 39 miles on the clock, I just had the rear wheel re-spoked, with spoke from Woody's! I will do the front this winter. It has the 660 Raptor engine, White Ind. Rear shock, Marzochi front forks. They really wanted this bike to stop so the rotors are Yamaha 1999 R1 Rotors! 56HP and 389 pounds, it makes for one fun ride on these Back roads here in Texas!
