This has nothing to do with comfort, looks or handling. It's all about the soul of the bike.

So I was at my local BMW dealer looking at the F800 / f650 and seeing about a trade on the tenere.

They are the most smug, arrogant and condescending dealership I've ever been to. It's my first time on the BMW and I was talking about maintenance and just generally talking to them about the bike and I realize they are pulling punches left and right.

I will not ever own a BMW simply because if I ever had to give that dealer one red cent it would burn me up. ::009::

This is the line that took the cake. "If you don't want us to do the maintenance then you probably think about it before you buy the bike because most novice mechanics will break it more"

I digested that said "uhh huh" and rode on out of there, Still looking for a smaller bike, if I could afford 2 I'd keep the s10 but I know one thing... It wont be a BMW.

They are apparently too much for me to handle.

Consider a VStrom 650. Great bike. Had two 650s at one point, sold mine to a friend in need. I miss it. My wife has 28k miles on hers, sold mine with 24k. Have 18k on the Super Ten, but still have lots of love for the WeeStrom. Great bike!

Rob

PS My BMW dealership experiences have been similar.

My experience with bmw was at a bike show a couple weeks after I got my Tenere, and I was all happy that I had a new bike. :)
I was looking at a gs1200, the salesman approached me and asked me what bike I had, I told him I had a Tenere, his immediately comment was "soon I'll see you at my dealership to trade it for a gs like all the other Tenere owners have already done". I asked him, how can that be if the bike just came into the country? and I walked away not wanting to heard the answer.

A great Vstrom 650 just got traded in at my dealer here in Wisconsin. The guy picked up a white S10. The dealer said the vstrom is in great shape. Probably not of any help for a New Yorker.

too bad he didn't trade it for my s10 :))

I'm holding out for a nice deal, I really feel for the BMW owners, it seems like owning one of those sucks the fun out of riding.

maybe they go faster because their wallets are so much lighter.

I have never owned a BMW, but I have test ridden a few of them at the local dealer here in Vegas. They seem pretty nice to me. They have let me ride a few of their bikes, with no promise of purchasing anything. I bought the Tenere and have ridden it there a few times, they seem genuinely interested in my bike, with no "you'll be sorry" crap. I had a couple of friends visit, and they rented two GS1200's for a couple days. Very pleasant rental experience. My experience may be unique, I have never visited any other BMW dealer.

V-Stroms are great, the Mrs has one, for tarmac only the Versys is even better with 17" wheels and a more revvy motor.

For off-road I would look for something like a single, the Versys is no better than the S10 for offroad IMO

Yea, if I ever decided to get me a GSA, I have a good dealer. They sell Red, Green, and Orange too. I've bought quite a few bikes from them.
Nephew works there too.

Maybe. Someday.

Bo is my salesman
Indy is my nephew in parts

I will say this though, about the BMW........
Their service department always seems to have more bays with BMW's getting sorted than the other brands they carry.
Gives me a queasy feeling.

Indy said it is also because those "dudes" are often the kind that don't service their own bikes.
(I now resemble that remark) :)

I'll have to ride over and check them out. I hope they don't mind if my tenere drops a little dried up mud on their parking lot.

My Tenere is my first non-Beemer, and I can say after 20 years and 5 BMW's that every dealership and service department I have come across are quite emphatically full of themselves. I have shopped Daytona, Orlando, Eurocycles, Hebert's, Blue Moon, and a few others that aren't in business anymore. I always got ticked with the sales people, and would always buy lightly used off IBMW.com. Then find a BMW certified private mechanic in the area for service. They are not hard to find, there is always a disgruntled BMW mechanic who goes into business for themselves because the dealership nonsense rubbed them the wrong way.

Plus there is always a fanboy who needs the latest and greatest model, and right now everyone is fruit for the Wethead, so deals are to made on the Cam Head now. Its amazing how many deals you can find on late model Beemer's when a new model comes out. Especially GS' that have never left pavement. Before the Tenere hit the states, I was shopping for a F800GS, but no one would budge on price, I ended up picking up a 03' R1150GS for $5K off IBMW, 6 months later the Tenere hit the streets and I wished I had waited. All the GS fanboys poo poo'd the S10 even though they hadn't ridden one to compare, but I got a chance in St Augustine about 6 months after release, and was sold. It was hard to part with my GS, but I am glad I did.

Camheads are awesome and you're right there are some available lately. I've seen some GS's but I prefer the S10 as a dual sport. However I'd buy another camhead RT in a minute if I found a decent deal - they are one hell of an awesome road bike and I wish I hadn't sold mine. Nothing like it for eating miles at a sporting pace with huge safety reserves, in my opinion.

Every time I ride my Super Ten, I like it more and more. It's still early in the game to say for sure, since I have only had the ST for a couple of months, but so far it seems like the best overall bike I have ever owned. Reliable, comfortable, plenty of power, handles beautifully -what's not to love about this beast? ::022::

My local BMW dealer is great (Frank's in Essex Jct., VT). Having sad that, it seems like the vast majority of BMW owners are a lot like the Harley crowd. They assume that we all want to own one of their bikes some day when we grow up.

Re: So glad I own the tenere.

You're right, but what's funny about that is back in earlier days when I rode airheads and Bricks (early k-bikes) most folks didn't even know about BMW motorcycles. I felt quite unique. Now, as you say, they have increased the brand awareness quite a bit, and profitably so I would say. I think it's a good thing, even though I agree about the arrogant riders and dealers.

I have owned my Tenere for one week......prior rides were a 2007 KTM 990 and 2010 1200 GSA........I loved both bikes....each very distinct in their offerings, abilities and costs.......This Yamaha is one of the greatest values in motorcycles. It is the greatest bang for the buck out there. Look at the service schedule on the other bikes and compare to the Tenere....... ::022::
