This is a particularly bad stretch of highway where deer are constantly creamed. Because of this once it turned dark in the morning I no longer rode my bike and stuck with the car. Car looks like it can be repaired, so my 300k goal, which is 12k away may be achievable yet ;D

Anyhow just a reminder to be extra careful when its dark in deer country.

Pretty crazy coincidence went along with this, namely the same song was playing on the radio as when I wrecked my first car in 89

Deer country here too. Got my first one with the truck a couple of years ago on the way to work. Unpredictable bastards, I really do hate them. Once fall comes, and it's dark in the morning, I stop riding to work. Just not worth the risk.

My co worker drove this stretch of highway for almost a decade @ 45 in a 65, I am thinking that is a good Idea, either that or I break out the old power wagon, hate to think of the gas mileage, but the armor feature is appealing :D

Glad you're ok shrekonwheels and glad there's one less of those bloody animals in the world. My encounter on the bike with one last year is still haunting me and I still have the injuries too.

Glad you are OK - The crazy part is that it's not like they are just running along or even standing and we hit them.

We once had a couple of cars, a couple of vans, and one bike, EVERY one of which had deer hits. One van had the side door dented from where a deer came out of the woods and ran into it. The Ford Escape had a soft bend behind the left front fender, where a doe's head went in between the tire and fender.

That was lucky ::008::
I'm not that familiar with the habits of deer, but we have them here too, fencing a road would prove extremely expensive, so what they do here I've noticed, is every 60-100 meters they have installed a small box that emits a high pitched 'beeping' noise, to keep critters from getting to near the road, and I have only ever seen a fox as road kill here.

Back when I lived in Pennsylvania, we said we had two kinds of drivers; those that had hit a deer, and those that hadn't hit one....yet. Oddly enough, when I had my deer/car event, the deer actually hit me; he charged out of the woods and head butted the driver's side door, leaving a nice big dent before he jumped up and headed into the woods. I got one of those "Yeah, sure, that's how it happened" looks from my Sergeant when I tried to explain where the dent came from.....

Deer are the rodent version of Humans, if it is a dumb Idea they probably will do it :D

Basically they normally start moving late in the evening until early morning. So about half hour before dark to the same after sun rise are your worst times for deer.

We have been experimenting with various crossings. Land bridges over highways despite the astetic appealing nature seem to not be working well. Under passes which are little more than large culverts buried seem to have moderate more success. Fences are built to help guide the Animals to the crossings.
The challenges being convincing Government to build them, lots of money of coures, especially for hte overpass type. The current trend in Wildlife Management is to focus the money on buying more land for hte animals. This is the wrong approach IMO as Animals need safe crossings and the humans of course need some safety in this regard as well.
Depending on where you live in Merica, the problems vary.
Beyond Deer, Elk, which are a 500+Lb animal are a problem along with Moose :O Bear are rare to be hit but it happens.
Cattle can be splashed and the occasional Horse. Those would never be an issue however Montana is an Open Range state, so if you smack a Ranchers animal, you have to pay for it.

Car did far better than I thought it would. I have no IDea how fast I was going at Impact but I was tooling along at about 65 when she jumped in front of me.
I am guessing 45 or 50 at Impact.

Timing belt somehow jumped, not sure how with a horizontal motor :p Will pull out the front, toss in new headlights, straighten the hood, new radiator (maybe) and off she goes to the 300k!

Lived in southern PA for over 18 years and had been fortunate enough to never come close to hitting a deer with the bike or truck. Moved to Southern Wisconsin this summer and have been mainly riding the bike to work. Had a three week stretch of bike commuting until I had to take the truck yesterday to run some errands at noon. A deer plowed into the back wheel yesterday morning while I was doing about 50. Lots of hair in the wheel, around the back bumper and tailgate but no damage. Not sure I would have been as fortunate on the bike. I don't hunt but now I understand why. It's not for the meat but to get even..........

I realize it's anecdotal but it seems like I've heard of more deer strikes this year than usual. Sunday morning I was talking to my nephew about the deer I hit on the bike this year. 10 hours later I got a text from him that he and his family were sitting on the side of the road with their car disabled due to a deer.

We need to greatly expand the hunting opportunities. The carrying capacity is massively out of whack.

I believe there are less people hunting overall.

We do need more. Montana kind of makes it a PIITB, so I can see the decline at least in our state.

Hunting is easy in my neighborhood.
You can drop something heavy from the window to break their necks while they eat the flowers.

The problem in Maryland is that it's over-regulated. Big time. So pretty much all that's left are the "Trophy hunters" That pass on does and spikes and only use their tags for big deer, then donate the meat. Which is all well and good, but meanwhile the does and small bucks are running unchecked. Also, part of the problem is the limitations on when, where and what you can use to hunt. Maryland is densely populated so you can't use Rifles in most of the state. Which also happens to be the quickest, most reliable way to kill a deer for food. I only hunt to put meat in the freezer, and I haven't hunted for the past few seasons because there's just no place to hunt anymore here. Plenty of deer, but I'm not going to pay 1500-2000 dollars to join a deer lease on an overhunted farm when I could walk out my front deer and trip over deer in my yard.
