Hi All,

Just sharing my experiences as a new S10 (2013) owner and what I did to effectively wake up a bone stock bike. I'm sure there are many who have done these mods but for those who haven't they may be worth considering.

I bought a 2013 S10 mid-summer with ~80,000 miles and have progressively been working to get it to run smoother and be more responsive. I found the bike to be completely stock and untouched, but well ridden and otherwise well cared for.
Most annoyingly, the off-idle stumble and clutch slip were the top of the list to get sorted.

The below I have done and each made a huge difference in the way the bile ran, but all put together have completely transformed the bike - night and day difference. After each task the bike was tested to note difference

1. Air filter - replaced the stock with a K&N hi-flow (washable) filter, and cleared out the oil and gas bath the original filter was soaked in.
2. Air/Fuel mix - found the screws all the way in, so back both out exactly 270 and double-checked with a TwinMax to ensure balance. Before, the bike was running waaaaay too lean
3. Clutch - the bike suffered from a bit of slip during hard acceleration, so thinking could be either worn plates or it was running a fully synth oil without friction modifiers.
- I change the oil to Motul 5100 4T - surprisingly huge difference in terms of slip reduction, but still a little too slippy for me:)
- Decided to do the Barnett Clutch spring conversion kit, running the medium springs - super easy job - and holy smoke! man, what a difference. Instant power transfer!

Presto! No more stumble or clutch slip. Quite happy with the results, so now enjoying the rest of the summer...

I do have a question though hopefully someone knows the answer - I am a little concerned about the stock cam chain tensioner on the bike considering the relatively high mileage. I'm not having any obvious issues and startups aren't particularly noisy. But I am interested in possibly changing out to a 2014 CCT to be on the safe side.
Question is whether there is a recall or factory warranty replacement for this available on a 3 year old bike without a YES? I've heard some people say there is and then some who say there isn't. I've checked on-line with Yamaha and certainly there is no mention of it. Anyone with first hand experience getting the CCT changed under a recall or the like?

Thanks
Karl

Congrats on the bike and sounds like good work.

No, the CCT is not a recall.
It will not be a warranty item since you are beyond the factory warranty and don't have YES.

On the up-side, at about $140 it's cheap and very easy to do yourself. Plenty of how-to threads are already here on the forum, including in the sticky on the subject.

::026:: to what CW wrote. I had the new CCT installed under warranty, because I had a failure, and because I have the YES, at 82k miles. Mine got very noise before it failed. Just pay attention and if you notice that the cam chain noise is staying noisy for over 30 seconds during cold start ups, go have a dealer listen to it. Some bikes have received warranty love outside of warranty. Every dealer is different in what they are willing to do for customers and what their relationship is with Yamaha.
