Anyone have any idea if the black rims are painted, powder coated, anodized or what? I think silver rims would look awesome on a Raven Tenere

Start changing the colour and you start slowing it down...

I also would like silver rims on my Raven. I read a few years ago on a V-Strom forum about using some paint stripper from NAPA to paint on (with tires off the rims) that bubbles the paint and then removed and leaves the natural silver underneath that can then be clear coated. I may give that a try when tire change time comes if it seems feasible and not harmful to the spokes or anything else. I'm going to put on some ariete 83 degree valve stems so the stem site would be empty too prior to putting them on and new tires. Just a thought to do pretty cheaply and a DIY project.

I noticed that the Worldcrosser had rims that were either completely painted argent or just the outer rims were argent. The lighting was spectacular in the shots and made it hard to tell. I like silver and argent would be just as good, just so there's a difference between the rims and the tires. Too much black in the stock setup for me.

I also found that some bikes had corrosion issues with the stock spokes, so I'm considering sending the rims to Woody in Denver next winter and getting stainless ones installed.

I'm considering doing that as well. If the paint does not hold up, powder coating will be done as well..

Doctorj,

A friend of mine did this to his 2004 FZ1 wheels and they looked awesome......I'll have to ask him again how he did it.

Post it up if/when you find out. I'd like to do this on my bike at some point when I do a tire change and put on the angled valve stems. One of the Aussie riders put some SS spokes on his bike himself. I wonder if that is a fairly easy DIY job or not. That would be an ideal time to do it when doing the "silver" wheel change. I may look for quotes on SS spokes.

This was talked about before(ss spokes), and to the best of my knowledge there are no ss nipples. SS spokes and corroded nipples don't go that well together in my opinion.. :)

Also if the paint is stripped off the rims, you will have to clear coat them to stop corrosion. Or polish them all the time.
This comes from the battle I had with Gold Wing rims, until they were powder coated.. YMMV :)

I agree, corrosion and dissimilar metals dont work well together.

Check out both Buchanan's and Woody's. Both sell stainless spoke and nipple sets.

The nickel-plate brass nipples should be fine without corrosion issues.
