So I just put in my first tank of gas in my new 2015 S10. As I was looking down inputting my fuel info into my phone I noticed my right cowling is cracked right at the hex bolt. I'm assuming when the dealer put in the battery, they take them out while on the floor, that they over tightened the nut. Either they cracked it there on the spot, or it was so tight that its cracked just under pressure from diving it. Picked the bike up on Tuesday, not sure how the dealer is going to handle it. I almost think they are going to screw me over and tell me I did it after the fact. Although I don't even own a hex driver.... A tool has not even touched the bike yet, not even installed my RAM mount yet. :'( :'(

Its not possible to over tighten those screws ,they are a quicklock kinda a thing , they will only go so far and stop , no threads to keep turning and you do have a hexkey for those screws ,it attached to the underside of your seat and in your tool pouch.

Where is the crack on the gray lower panel or the upper painted one?

Its the upper painted one.

Dealer just called me back, apparently you don't take that part off when doing the battery. They told me to bring the bike back in and they will take some pictures and send it off for warranty to Yamaha. I was REALLY expecting them to say I was SOL or try and blame me for doing it. Going to try and ride up there after work to get the paper work started.

Hopefully it goes as smooth as they made it sound it will go on the phone...

Yeah, that painted panel has conventional threaded screws that could be over-tightened. The battery is under the lower panel. Must have happened at the factory or the bike took a bump somewhere along the way and cracked at the screw hole stress point.

You should be OK and get it replaced.

I lucked out on my bike I bought. It had another bike fall against it and slightly scratched half a dozen parts so they took about 1K off the price.
I polished out one and hardly notice the rest of 'em.

Ya I think they will, going to drive it up to the dealer on Saturday. Nothing worse than looking down at your two day old bike and seeing a big old crack in the plastic lol

Sadly, a tool probably has touched the bike, most likely a mutton fisted yamaha mechanic ! Best of luck with the warranty claim ::008::

Took it to the dealer today. They took a million pictures and said that the new part should be ready in about 2 weeks. As long as Yamaha does not shoot down the claim, I should be good to go.
