Waterproof is a plus for sure but in my case it would be for commuting not travel. I have a set of Trax panniers and top box for that. I just don't need that much storage to go to work and I hate the way the bike looks with just the top box on.

However the easier way to go for the short term is to use one of my Rollie bags and call it good.

Gat - which Pelican is that. Looks to be a close size to what I was envisioning. My real need being a place to carry my laptop bag when commuting...yet low profile enough that I can still carry gear on top if travelling. I'd say, judging by the pics, your Pelican is close to what I seek.
It's a 1550 Pelican case.

I have a 1550 on my KLR and it hauls a lot. Also have a 1400 if I want to travel light.
