I've been waiting to take my wife on a ride for two reasons. One, I don't like her to ride with me the first couple hundred miles because I want to make sure I'm comfortable with the bike before I add here. Second, when she first saw it she said I'm never getting on that thing. Well, tonight was the night. I needed to warm the bike up for its first oil change, she finally said she thought she could get on it, and the weather was pretty much perfect. Backed the bike out of the garage, braced for her to get on, and off we went. Didn't go far, just long enough for her to say wow this is a lot better than I thought it would be. SCORE. She loves it she really really loves it. I'm a happy man tonight.

That's always good news. My wife rode with me and said it was terrible, not just terrible, like the worst motorcyle ever. Every time I even joke about taking the tenere on a ride with her, I get that vivid memory brought back immediately. No, I don’t think in this lifetime or any other. Well I ride alone then.
What doesn't she like about it?

Wow- That is SO backward to us. My partner has been on a number of bikes and prefers the Tenere to everything else she has been on. We've done 10 hour days and as long as she has her AirHawk for more than an hour she is fine. According to her, the seat is the right combination of dimensions and flatness.

After the first few long rides she made a comment about her pants getting wadded up. Even though she did not complain or ask for it, I tried cutting a couple of pieces of nylon to raise the front of her seat about 3/8" to 1/2" and she liked the change.

The front seat bolts are raised by the height of the left-hand white piece. The right-hand piece is routed to the depth that supports the pads on the bottom of the seat in the mid-section.

My wife had that problem for awhile until I really stressed the importance of not leaning. She has told me that what helped her was when I finally got a sissy bar for the Harley and for the SuperT I have a rear case that helps her know where and when to lean.

Intercoms are really great for helping the passenger know what to do. I love our Sena set. I feel very fortunate to have a wife who likes riding two-up with me. I'm planning to get a new bike in 2015 and she will be part of the test ride because I want her to make sure she likes the bike. We've already been on a 2013 ST in the showroom on the center stand, but the important test will be on the road.

She would not get on the bike with me on the center stand. She was embarrassed even talking about it in the showroom.
Oh and what kind of helmets do you use?

Ever since my wife got her own bike, it's her on her bike or she doesn't go. When she was riding pillion, I just told her to put her chin on my shoulder in the turns. Worked great until she turns around to see something.

The sales guy was standing there with us and I asked if we could sit on it on the center stand. He was very encouraging to do it, so I think that helped. But I can see how a self-conscious person might be embarrassed. I think the kind of store and salesman can make a big difference in how comfortable we were trying it out.

My wife and I both wear full-face street helmets. I wear an Arai Profile and she has an HJC CL-15 (or similar). I've also worn an HJC SyMax II in the past (flip-up chin bar), but it didn't fit my head right so I switched to the Arai. The Sena headset worked fine on all of these.

::026:: My wife probably has around 25K miles of motorcycle experience. I'm pretty sure less than 250 miles of that happened as a pillion. Just not her thing.

Regardless of where your spouse is sitting, it's good to have them along.

My previous post was tongue firmly in cheek... O:)

I have three different riding modes which I like exactly equally - riding with a few friends; riding with my wife on the back; and riding long distance solo.
I like doing all of these styles, none of them stands out as a preference.

Lucy LOVES the Tenere, she can't get enough of it, I can't take it out of the shed without her running for her helmet. Which is fantastic - I'ts great that she's so into it, but apart from commuting to work solo riding is a thing of the past. And she doesn't care for riding in more than a group of one; just us. So I don't get to ride with others much anymore.

It seems like forever since I've headed over the horizon , just me and my thoughts. Ride from pre-dawn to dusk, throw down the tent, pack up in the morning and do it all again in reverse. I sure as hell miss a good 12 hours in the saddle day.

In the big picture it's a small problem to have - and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Pete.

I definitely enjoy both forms of riding. And more than likely, most of my miles will be solo, but before I bought the bike, and we were just "looking", she would say "I can't believe you want to buy a bike like that. Where am I going to sit? " To which I boldly replied, this bike is made for riding 2 up. I didn't have a clue if it was or not, but it does look cool.

Great tip Checkwrecks. What type of helmet does your wife like?
We both have Shoei Qwests and have Sena intercoms. I know intercoms are not what some people want, but we are chatting constantly and she finds riding without them is a bore.
My partner is a full partner when she is on the bike and is small enough that I hardly ever feel her move. Not that I need her help, but coming from an ex who wouldn't ride and was constantly trying to make excuses why I shouldn't, whatever I can do to share is the least I can do to have a great riding partner. She navigates, takes photos, waves to others, and her wit makes riding more fun to share.
Yes, she does get comfortable:

And thanks to our respective ex's, yes, we both appreciate how lucky we are!

Headed to WV this weekend with Nancy. She loves the ride on the back of the Tenere.
