Ok folks ,
Now that the YST's have been out for a while , I know many of you looked for a bit more comfort than the stock seats. ( ie : Gel pads , air cushions , after market seats etc.. ) I'd like to get some honest answers on what you purchased and now that you've had it awhile , how do you like it ? I'm 6'4" tall and 239 pounds and I'd like something a bit more comfortable , I can't ride more than 80 to 100 miles on the stock seat and I'm sore as heck when I get home. ( and that's taking breaks in between ).
Please try to give honest answers and reviews on what you have.
Thanks a bunch guys.

Seat opinions have gotta be the least helpful farkle advice you can get.

My opinion, of course.

Of all the various upgrades discussed here, it seems like "which seat is better" (or best) is the one nobody can possibly answer for somebody else. Heck, even the OEM seat has reviews all over the place.

I'm convinced that the only way to find the seat that fits your comfort needs best is to try them all. An almost impossible feat. (Although a few seats on this forum have made the rounds. Bought, then sold, then sold again)

I am 2 years into my Tenere. Ride everyday. From commuting to 700 mile days. I still ride on the OEM seat. Not saying I love it, but which "upgrade" to invest in has eluded me after reading all the seat threads for years. I even bought a second OEM seat off another inmate so that if I ever decide on one aftermarket vendor, I can ride while I wait.

But it just sits in the box it came in. I must not dislike the Yamaha seat much.

Good luck. Cuz that's what it takes apparently. :)

There's the problem , you can't test seats out , and I can't afford to buy one and not like it . I was thinking of trying a Gel Pad , or AirHawk air pad to see if that helps since it's cheaper than a seat replacement ??

The Sargent seat seems to satisfy people with bigger (arses, bums, asses, butts) you chose.

I must say that once I installed a backrest, I have been riding comfortably full days on the oem seat with no back pains. (I seem to always need some sort of lumbar support to avoid back pain and general comfort. This is the first time I had it on a motorcycle and, damn if it doesn't work!)

I totally agree. Thus my cold feet every time I get close to pulling the trigger.

I do suggest you do the seat leveling mod first, if you haven't yet.
I'm not sure why I'm so CHEAP about the seat upgrade. I mean, I've thrown $THOUSANDS$ at this bike.

Again, I simply think I'm not unhappy enough with the seat to fuel the desire.
I suppose I also have a fairly high threshold for pain. At least certain kinds.

Might try Seat Concepts solution. It's cheap. And with the extra seat, I don't feel near as squeamish about the self-help nature of their product. I might learn something in the process. And once I dig in, I might even experiment with some self customizing if I'm not satisfied. Worst case scenario, I end up back at Yamaha square one. :)

Demographics: 60 years old, 6’ 220 lbs. with a skinny butt. The stock seat sucked. I was initially reluctant to get a Russell seat but was concerned about the extra ride height. I tried a Seat Concepts seat. It was wider, level, and flat. It also added at least an inch to the ride height. It was much better but still uncomfortable after 40 miles. I took the cover off and shaped the foam to fit my posterior, it ended up shaped like a little tractor seat. It is now better than any off the shelf seat I have ever tried and is comfortable for at least 100 miles before I get pressure points. On other bikes I have tried Corbin and Sargent. I liked the Sargent on my V-Strom. The Corbin seats did not work for me. I have had 3 custom seats, a Rick Mayer on a Concours 1000 and Russell seats on my FJR and on my wife's SV65. The Russell seat was an all-day seat and the Rick Mayer was good for at least 500 mile days.

It is rare to hear of anyone unhappy with Russell seats.

I have a build date of Sept 10 for a Russell seat. ::012:: I will deal with the seat height, I will post results when I get the seat on the bike.

I like my Sargent, very firm but not overly hard like some and priced reasonably well for the front and the rear.

Sounds like we're built about the same. Extra seat height wouldn't bother me , I was thinking of ordering a jack up kit for my YST . I'll google those seats you mentioned and take a look. Thanks.

I took my brother's advice. He is a rediculous long distance rider. For instance, he is riding from Fond du Lac, WI to Austin, TX this weekend to visit his son. Granted, its a long weekend, but that's a LOT of saddle time.

His advice: skip all the intermediate steps and get a Russell Daylong. People spend a lot of money on AirHawks, gel pads, beads, sheepskings, various after market seats. Most still don't get the comfort they're looking for and end up with a RDL - after spending a boatload on all the attempted solutions.

My experience: he was right. At least for me. I did a Bun Burner Gold to break in my new RDL. At the end of that run, my arse was not the part of me that was hurting. I was dog tired, but my butt could have kept on going.

If long distance riding comfort is what you're after, its tough to beat. On the down side, the "wings" do get in the way a bit off road. I've learned to work around it and doesn't present much of an obstacle anymore. And the seat is not waterproof. Russell sells a cover for when the skies open up.

I seldom ride more that 150 miles in a day , 200 on rare occasion . Most just ride up the Bighorn Mountains and go exploring and I rest often.

I havent settled on a permanent solution for an aftermarket seat . I bought an airhawk cushion for any extended trips and take it off for just putting around. airhawk worked well once you figure out how much air to put in.Im sure an after market seat is in the future but untill i can sit on a few to see what i like the airhawk is fine

Thanks , I was wondering how well an Airhawk seat pad worked. I contacted them this afternoon and they said they plan on making the Airhawk R for bikes like the YST in the near future.
I appreciate your review on this. Have you used it off road and if so , how did it work ? Basicly I'd like to relieve the pressure points on the tailbone , Perineum and Scrotum.

If you are suffering from sleepypeepee you may want to consider a seat with a channel

However, if you are only ever putting in 150 miles at a pop, maybe this motorcycle isn't for you.....this platform is a large cc touring/ offroad capable beast. 150 miles is less than the first gas stop of a day, not a total that is thought of as an extreme....
