Hi folks,

Well, after a few weeks with my Tenere I'm still loving the bike but I'm hating the seat. I did not enjoy the seat the first weekend I took the bike out but I figured I'd give it time with some longer rides just to make sure my own butt was broken back in some. I'm no stranger to long 1000+ miles rides and I never had to change out the stock seat on my V-Strom but I have had bad seats before...including the stock seat on an older ST1300 (horribly painful) and the stock seat on an '05 R1200GS. Okay I'm blabbing on...long story short...I hate the stock Tenere seat and my butt is killing me after a measly 150+ miles.

So, I'm searching for a new seat and I know I do not like the Russell Day Long wheelchair look (hope I don't offend anyone). I had a Sargent on my old '05 R1200GS and that still wasn't as comfy as the stock seat on my old DL1000 V-Strom. I rode a Russell Day Long on a friend's ST1300 a few times and loved the comfort but just can't live with the looks.

The only other 'popular' brand of seat I've never owned/tried is a Corbin. Any thoughts on the Corbin for the Tenere and would you mind offering up some good feedback if so? I'm 5'9" and roughly 190 lbs.

Any suggestions are much appreciated and I really hope to get some good guidance soon because my Tenere's stock seat keeps bucking me off and keeping me from enjoying my new ride!

I have a heated corbin seat that i need to sell, if you are interested. Its broken in with about 1k miles and I think its very comfortable. Shoot me a pm if interested and I can send you some pictures. I'm from Houston so it would even be possible to meet halfway for the delivery. Its not very hard to talk me into a ride.

loved my corbin on my v-strom, hated it on the tenere.
have a sargent now, has not quite broken in, but worlds ahead of the corbin in fit and finish, and comfort (once seated in)
Sargent did offer to re-do the foam for guys that found it too firm.
Customer service is #1

Overall, it depends on what and where you have issues. Does your tailbone hurt, do you feel edge pressure where your legs touch the edge of your seat. Do you feel like there is a forward lean on your pelvis towards the front? If you are leaning forward, try shortening the 4 rear rubber bumpers under the seat. I had Rich's here in Seattle area add gel, and they dished it some but barely. I old them my tailbone was the biggest issue. Saddleman has the tailbone relief type seat now available too. I agree he Russell is goofy looking on this type of bike. I had a Corbin years ago and think they are hard. Mine was done for $195 using stock cover.

First, somewhere around here there is a thread for modifying the existing seat with rubber washers....Try this. It eliminates the forward lean and with a sheepskin is a good short term solution.

Second Seat Options:
Recovering the seat using your existing using your existing pan:
Seat Concepts
Russell Day Long
Bill Mayer
Cee Baileys
Aftermarket Seats include:
Saddlemen Adventure Track Seat
Moose Racing Adventure Seat
Corbin
Sargent

For the record, I'm large (6'4"/300#) & I have a Sargent with the firm foam which has broken in nicely. The OEM seat didn't move me and I tried different combinations of washers with the sheepskin pad. I came to this bike from a Buell Ulysses which (IMHO) the most comfortable stock ever to come on a motorcycle.

Finally, aftermarket seats come up regularily in the Marketplace....

YMMV

Good Luck & Good Night

I have a Sargent on mine and i find it to be very comfy, my last bike was an fz1 with the yamaha gel seat and i had to have a sheepskin buttpad to make my 2000 mile trip to mexico, not so on the tenere with the sargent i find it comfy enough by itself. By the way im a little guy at 5'-7" and 165 lbs, the bad thing about the sargent is i think it makes the bike taller.

I also endorse the Corbin seats. I bought a used Valkyrie in 2000 with a Corbin seat & did many 500 mile + days with no issues (put over 50,000 miles on the bike). Since then I've had them on at least three other bikes I can think of. When I put one on my 2005 FJR1300 my riding buddies observed how my riding improved. I told then with the firmness of the Corbin seat I had more confidence with the bike because I could feel things better. You get more input from your butt than you think. Any experienced pilot can verify that!

I put a Corbin on the seat of my Tenere last fall but haven't gone on any long rides yet. I'm pleased with the performance on the few short rides I've taken though.

Today, I recieved a passenger's Corbin seat for my wife. I bought it form a member here on the board. My wife sat on it in the garage behind me & was very impressed with the shape & firmness.

Yup, I'm a Corbin fan. ::012::

Tom Simmons in Fayettville Ar. make one of the most comfortable seat I've ever had. He has built three for me so far and I'm going to have him do two more for me in a couple of weeks. http://www.tscustomseats.com

I went the cheap route and purchase the Seat Concepts replacement foam. I sit just a tad taller on it, but it's definintely more comfortable. If I find myself way forward (with my wife aboard), it reminds me of the factory seat, but scooting back a bit put more padding beneath and it's a better contour imo. Only have about 600 miles on it so far, and a little over 2 hours is the longest single sitting, but I like it for what it is.

Humm, Sargent claims their seats are lower than stock. Below is the table as it appears on Sargent's website.

For me, the Seat Concepts seat is where it's at. For $159 bucks it's at least worth a shot, and if you don't like it you could EASILY offload it to someone else and spend bigger coin on some of the other players in the market.

I've had the seat concepts foam on my KLR and now this bike, and will continue to do so on subsequent bikes. For the S10, it eliminates the forward tilt completely, I did the bumper mod on the stock pan and the seat still sucked and ultimately reverted back to stock bumpers and the SC foam/vinyl.

If you're comfortable with a staple gun and spray adhesive, then give it a shot. Or, give your local upholster $20 and have him do it in 15 minutes for ya.

I am saving my pennies to get the Sargent heated seat. I have 2 on my V-stroms they seem to fit my Big Butt best. Plus 30 day money back guarantee if you don't like it. just my 2 cents whoops need those back for my future seat :)

I too am a happy Seat Concepts customer. Its very affordable and quite comfortable for me on all day rides. The new foam does seem to add a little to the height but that works good for me as well. I would definitely recommend them. If you are not confident in installing your self, any local upholstery shop can install it for little added cost. 20 - 40 usd typically.

Seats are a very personal farkle, and folks tend to stick with companies that have worked well for them historically. Myself included :D My recommendation is that if you've never tried sargent, corbin, etc... seat before, try out SC. At under half the cost, I don't think you can go wrong. Unless you're fortunate enough to get a custom seat by driving to sargent/corbins location, that is...

Hmmmm, then maybe its the fact that the sargent seat is 20% wider than stock that makes it "feel" taller.

The Sargent seats are firmer than stock too, correct? If so, than you're not "sinking in" as much, resulting in a higher overall riding position.

For the UK folk Tony Archer is the man:

All for £100 ($150) including postage, he can do whatever you want with regard to styling and colours, I just kept it simple asking for a bit of a more cosseting shape and some extra foam, plu extending the rather short passenger area.
